************************************************************************************** Community Service Update Community Service Director David Gendron talked about the Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of the pier. We are looking to have Rotarians greet visitors as they visit this MB Attraction. The expectation is we will encourage visitors to give money as they come into visit. Later in the week Dave emailed us about Vision To Learn Opportunities. There are some upcoming opportunities to volunteer in the Vision to Learn screening process at numerous nearby schools. Our club continues to financially support Vision to Learn and volunteering is a great way to see how our funds are making a difference. Its first-come, first-serve, so please do not hesitate in signing up. Environmental Charter MS has been added to the list. Our own Ken Deemer sits on the board of this school (as well as another MS and HS). Our club along with Charlie Steinmetz's Foundation contributed funds to VTL specifically earmarked for these schools. Hopefully you can find a time to go. You can sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4ea4ae23aafa7-vision Members Larry Johnson thanked all of the Rotarians that participated in preparing the Gourmet Dinner that was purchased at our Celebrate Manhattan Beach fundraiser. A big thanks to Matt Peck and Maggie at the grill; Paul Allman and Sharon for the musical entertainment; James Kennedy, Vinny Fazzino, Jim McFarland and his wife Christine, Shannon Ryan, Mark and Dickie Burton, and Roger Cox. Thanks for putting on a fantastic dinner and supporting Rotary. Past President Jan Rhees will once again head up our Family of Rotary. This is our way of reaching out to members that need our support. Dear Fellow MB Rotarians: Houston Relief In a time of extreme need for Texans displaced by Hurricane Harvey, the city of Manhattan Beach is coming together to aid the small town of Cleveland, Texas. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District and the City of Manhattan Beach, along with Manhattan Beach service organizations, churches, and residents, have started the ACT campaign Aid Cleveland Texas. Cleveland, a small town of 8,000 residents, is just one of the many communities around Houston that went underwater. The Cleveland Independent School District, which has been closed for the past week, serves 4,100 students 85% of whom are on meal assistance plans. It is also the hometown of Dr. Ben Dale, Mira Costa High School principal. The ACT Campaign is rallying Manhattan Beach residents to contribute to a drive for much-needed supplies, which will be delivered to Cleveland, Texas by next weekend. Cleveland city leaders have indicated that their greatest needs are in the following categories, which will be collected at the designated school site or at City Hall: Hygiene Kits (MBMS); Clothing Kits (Mira Costa); School Supplies Kits (Meadows, Grand View, Pacific); Baby Supplies Kits (Pennekamp): Blankets, Pillows, Towels (Pacific); Cleaning Supplies Kits (Mira Costa); Scrubbing Supplies (Robinson); Pet Supplies (Grand View); Shoes (Skechers has already generously committed to donate shoes to Cleveland) Please see the ACT Aid Cleveland Texas Facebook page for details on what items should go in the kits. Page 2

The items will be collected on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 5 and 6, at City Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and at the school sites from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Hundreds of volunteers will be needed on these days for collections. Please watch this space and the ACT Aid Cleveland Texas Facebook page as details become available. Additionally, cash donations are also being accepted at the ACT Campaign (MBX Foundation) http://mbxfoundation.org/shop/hurricane-relief, a Manhattan Beach-based IRS registered 501 (3) tax-exempt organization that will send proceeds directly to the ACT Campaign; the American Red Cross via the MBMS Red Cross Youth Club (Checks may be made out to American Red Cross (memo field: MBMS ARC Fundraiser) and dropped at any school front office; or Good360 (to serve the entire disaster area). If you have time to join me, I will be volunteering on Wednesday at Mira Costa from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Finally, I have been in contact with the Rotary Club of Cleveland's President, Mr. Scott Lambert. Scott will let us know how our MB Rotary Club can assist. Yours in Rotary with Kind regards, Mark Programs September 18 The current state of our District - We ll hear from Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi on what is happening in our District.
