Code Composer EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The mission of Code Composer is to unite music and technology to engage anybody in the act of creativity and turn people into creators. Our vision is of a future where there is no divide between STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and art and where people create their own things as much as they consume the ideas and products of others. We believe that both STEM subjects and artistic pursuits are, at their core, about creation and grow from new ideas, and that by combining the two we can engage people to be makers of any flavor. Looking back in history we see painters who invented technology, sculptors who engineered buildings, and musicians who studied math. Just think of the renaissance artistinventor. People like Leonardo Da Vinci poured creativity into science and invention as much as they poured creativity into the arts. In the end, STEM fields and art are both different representations of human creativity. We believe that both fields, commonly considered so opposite, each can show the joy and reward that comes from creating something of your own invention. In addition, we strongly believe in fostering creativity. Our society is quickly becoming purely consumers, who read, watch, and listen to the creations of others while creating very little themselves. People are missing out on the growth and enjoyment that comes from making something of their own design. In recent years, we have been happy to see creativity making a comeback with things like the DIY and Maker movements which have created communities fostering the open and shared creation of all things, from 3D printers and open source furniture to knitted scarfs and custom made paint. We believe in these ideals and want to be part of this push for the creation of new art and technology. Code Composer can be seen as a response these two beliefs, while also being a useful teaching tool in its own right. We re combining music and technology as a marriage of the art and STEM fields, all in service of creation.
Code Composer itself is an online class designed to teach any beginner how to code, but does so through interactive lessons where our students create music using the coding language itself. Along the way, students will also learn the basics of traditional music composition and make music that is unique to coding. It will be designed for beginners of any age and will be distributed as a monthly subscription, in addition to being packaged as a course marketed to schools. The process of making music with code will involve using a unique programing language designed for this course that includes commands for playing various tones and samples. To create a song, you simply string together and loop these commands. We are excited to see the combination of the arts with engineering, technology, and the STEM fields at large and believe that by combining music with coding, we will engage students to keep learning, to experiment on their own, and to code just for the pure art of it. There are four main elements of our business plan, which will allow us to keep teaching new students. The first element is our subscription model. Code Composer will be sold at $10 a month, letting anyone with internet access become a student of our program. The second element is our set of in-person classes. The main aspect of this will be our school partnerships. Each school will receive a course guide along with course materials to use in class and Code Composer accounts for each student. This way schools can make Code Composer their own class. In addition to partnering with schools, we will hold our own workshops and day camps where students will get to learn from our own staff. Our third element is corporate licensing and consulting. The technology that runs behind the scenes of Code Composer that makes it possible to write, compile, and run code on the internet will be desirable to other companies. We will license our technology, along with support and development help from our own web engineers. This can range from custom made training tools tailored to the needs of the company to bare bones tools for running code on the internet. Finally, the fourth element of our business plan consists of grants, gifts, and donations. Each year, the CEO will be working part time writing grants, contacting potential donors, and helping ease the work of everyone else by communicating plans and needs inside the company and taking care of all outside communication.
