Sbarra Patricia Wilson CIC Astronaut retires after 42 years After 42 years working at Center Industries Corporation, Joydell Smith retired. Smith was one of the first 12 employees at CIC when the company started in 1975 as an affiliate support organization of CPRF. These employees were known as The Astronauts for forging into territory where no one had gone before: large-scale competitive employment for people with www.cprf.org Page 2 photo by Kacee Shuler Joydell Smith (lef) and Lisa Dean, CIC Window Frame department, at Smith s retirement celebration. disabilities. The Astronauts gave up their government benefits to work at Center Industries, where they would earn competitive wages with full benefits. Smith, who manufactured window frames for Boeing 737s, saw Center Industries grow from 12 employees with one contract to more than 280 employees with numerous contracts and vendors throughout the country. Employees gathered for a retirement party to wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement. President & CEO Patrick T. Jonas Founder John F. Page 3 CPRF News CPRFofKS Honoring the service and dedication of our Board CPRF s mission is to promote independence for people with disabilities by providing employment, training, technology, and more to those in need. This mission simply would not be possible without our generous and knowledgable Board of Directors. These individuals help guide our decision-making and keep us moving forward on the right track. Many of our members have served CPRF for several years, and we honored five members who have been with us for more than 25 years at our River City Roll event. To Daniel M. Carney, Deryl K. Schuster, Daniel J. Taylor, Donald D. Sbarra, and Joyce Smith: thank you for your time, your service, and your dedication to our mission. Daniel M. Carney Chairman Dan Carney is a humble man of few words, so we brag for him. For 45 years, Mr. Carney has served as Chairman of the Board for CPRF. A longtime friend of CPRF Founder John F. Jack Jonas Jr., Mr. Carney s continued and unwaivering support of our mission is unprecedented. CPRF has accomplished so much as an organization over the last 45 years, and Mr. Carney has been with us the whole way, assisting our mission in too many ways to count- through financial contributions, dedicating his time and energy, and encouraging us to continue creating pioneering programs. More than anything, he believes in the people we serve. Mr. Carney never sought recognition, praise, or credit for all his work, but he has taken great pride in CPRF s success, said Patrick Jonas, CPRF president and CEO. He is one of the most understanding, humble, and generous people you will ever meet. We can t thank you enough for all you have done for us, Mr. Carney. Mr. Schuster played a key role in assisting CPRF Founder John F. Jack Jonas Jr. with the development of the Jaycee Cerebral Palsy Ranch, a summer camp for children and adults with disabilities, going so far as to set up a scholarship fund for campers, which has since been transformed into an equipment fund for families with medical equipment needs. His banking acumen and helpful contacts have assisted the organization on multiple occasions, whether we need to finance a new facility or a new project. We are tremendously grateful to Mr. Schuster for his longstanding support of CPRF. Thank you, Mr. Schuster. Daniel J. Taylor Treasurer Daniel Taylor has served on the CPRF Board of Directors for 30 years as Treasurer. Mr. Taylor has been extremely generous with his time and resources toward advancing our mission. Instrumental in starting and chairing the CPRF Endowment Association, he is the first to step up to the plate for all CPRF s capital campaigns. Mr. Taylor also led the way in negotiating the purchase of CPRF s current administrative office building. He truly believes in our mission to promote employment and independence for people with disabilities. Thank you, Mr. Taylor.

Sbarra Member Donald Sbarra has served on the CPRF Board of Directors for 28 years and was of great assistance during a transitional leadership phase within the organization. Mr. Sbarra has offered excellent council on numerous occasions and has been extremely generous in support of the CPRF mission throughout his many years of service. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful supporter of those we serve. Thank you, Mr. Sbarra. Joyce Smith Assistant Secretary Joyce Smith has served on the CPRF Board of Directors for 40 years, having worked with CPRF Founder John F. Jack Jonas Jr. long before CPRF came to be. Mrs. Smith also has a daughter with a disability who began working at Center Industries Corporation, a CPRF affiliate, since the day it opened in 1975 (see page 2). Joyce helped make CPRF run from behind the scenes as our founder s executive assistant, and we owe a lot to her constant dedication. Thank you, Mrs. Smith.

We can t thank this wonderful team enough for all their hard work. With their help, we ve repainted speed bumps and fences, cleared debris, cleaned a pond, and even helped Timbers residents garden and dispose of unwanted furniture items. We could not have done all this work without this group. Thank you! In Memory Robert E. Bob Schmidt 1927-2017 Mr. Schmidt served on the CPRF Board of Directors from 1984-2002. He contributed his time and resources generously to CPRF during and after his years of service. Mr. Schmidt and his wife Pat were active philanthropists who supported numerous organizations, particularly in their home city of Hays, Kansas.
