Volume 97, Issue 2 September 2015 Editor: Tawny D. Mack Inside this Issue: Elisa Robinson Chisholm Honored by State Bar of Georgia Each year the State Bar of Georgia Access to Justice Committee and the State Bar of Georgia Pro Bono Project solicit nominations for the State Bar s Pro Bono Awards. One of the State Bar of Georgia Access to Justice Committee and the Pro Bono Project s most prestigious awards is the H. Sol Clark award. The H. Sol Clark award was named after H. Sol Clark of Savannah, a former Georgia Court of Appeals judge, who was known as the father of legal aid in Georgia. This prestigious award recognizes an attorney who has excelled in one or more of a variety of activities that extend civil legal services to those in the state of Georgia who are of low income and underserved. This year s recipient of the H. Sol Clark is Elsie Dolly Robinson Chisholm of Bouhan Falligant LLP, which is a local full-service law firm that offers its clients an incredibly wide spectrum of services, and is backed by more than a century of commitment to the community. The firm provides clients with the highest level advice, counsel and representation available. Ms. Chisholm, as a member of this talented legal team, has provided legal services to her clients in the areas of estate planning and probate, including probate conservatorship and guardianship proceedings, real estate law, focusing on residential closings, corporate law, including the formation of limited liability companies, partnerships, corporations, and creditor s rights, focusing on bankruptcy representation. Ms. Chisholm has gone above and beyond in providing those who are low-income in this community with legal services. The Access to Justice Committee and the Pro Bono Project has chosen to present Ms. Chisolm with the H. Sol Clark Award as recognition of her professionalism and commitment to, and support of, the delivery of pro bono civil legal services to those in Savannah and surrounding areas who cannot afford legal services and are underserved. Ms. Chisholm has a longstanding history of providing the community with Pro Bono services, and has provided Savannah Bar Association with leadership on the issues of access to justice. Georgia Legal Services Program would like to extend its warmest congratulations to Ms. Chisholm on this fine achievement and for her continuing support of Pro Bono outreach in our community.

Page 5 Domestic Violence Awareness Month: GLSP Works to Stop Abuse October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of an issue that impacts a staggering number of Americans. Statistics show that more than 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner, and every year, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes. In Georgia, one hundred and seventeen victims were killed in 2014 as a result of DV. But legal services can help to protect victims. Protective orders are effective in 75% of cases to stop or reduce violence. Georgia Legal Services has resources for domestic violence survivors that may help stop the cycle of violence. Georgia Legal Services lawyers represent victims of domestic violence at no cost in Temporary Protective Order hearings in Savannah and all 154 counties outside of metro Atlanta. GLSP also provides holistic legal assistance to help victims secure public benefits, healthcare, protect subsidized housing rights, and financial resources to keep survivors independent from abuse. GLSP also has a website with easy-to-understand information about what constitutes domestic violence and assistance related to housing rights, public benefits, and the needs of special populations such as immigrants, LGBT survivors, and Teen Dating Violence victims. GLSP s online source of free legal aid referrals, know-your-rights information, and self- help tools is available at: www.georgialegalaid.org. Survivors of domestic violence who cannot afford an attorney can often get free lawyers from GLSP in Temporary Protective Order and public benefits cases. Anyone who may not know where to turn for help can call us for more information or look at our helpful website, says Vicky Kimbrell, Georgia Legal Services Family Violence Project director. For more information, call Georgia Legal Services Program at 1-800-498-9469. For a media inquiry, call our public information specialist at 404-563-7710 ext. 1627.
