COST IC0902: Brief Summary Dr. Oliver Holland King s College London Prof Maria Gabriella di Benedetto Prof. Maria-Gabriella di Benedetto University of Rome La Sapienza Chair of COST IC0902
COST IC0902: In a Nutshell COST IC0902 is entitled: Cognitive Radio and Networking for Cooperative Coexistence of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks COST IC0902 proposes coordination among research in the field of cognitive radio and networks several research efforts are currently in place to introduce cognitive mechanisms at various layers of the OSI model Also goes beyond this by integrating the cognitive concept across all layers of system architecture, in view of joint optimization of design Aims to develop a cognitive platform to prove the feasibility and test capabilities, etc., of CR/CN paradigms
COST IC0902: In a Nutshell Important technical challenges still need to be overcome. Open research issues cover a wide range of issues, e.g., Design of methods for reliable spectrum sensing Definition of algorithms for efficient, dynamic link adaptation Definition of appropriate PHY and MAC techniques for CR Design of protocols for cooperation in spectrum sharing and sensing Optimisation of higher layers based on underlying lower layers provided by CR (and optimisation of lower CR layers based on upper layer requirements) Definition of communication and representation languages for cognitive information exchange, e.g., spectrum information structuring (database?) COST IC0902 aims to address such challenges, and therefore to bring a significant and practical contribution to the development of cognitive engines for wireless communications
Primary Objectives of IC0902 Address technical challenges in CR/CN Allow for coordinated research and development in the field of flexible spectrum use, spectrum sharing, and intersystem coexistence based on the cognitive radio and networking concepts Define and develop a cognitive platform that will prove the feasibility of cognitive systems and will show the potential benefits of cognitive radio/networking Impact standardization bodies in Europe and abroad Provide graduate students and young researchers with up-to-date research results and information, and the possibility to collaborate and interact with experienced researchers from across Europe and the world
The major end-users are: Target Groups/Users of IC0902 Industries and companies interested in implementing products based on the cognitive platform resulting from IC0902 Researchers in the broad field of wireless communications, and in particular cognitive radio and networks, who will take advantage of the innovative results obtained in IC0902 Operators offering mobile/wireless networking services The society as a whole, since radio spectrum is considered as a societal good, and the application of cognition improves efficiency and fairness in radio spectrum usage In the long run, the general public, and in particular consumers and professional users of IT products and mobile/wireless communication devices, will benefit from better products thanks to standardization based on IC0902
Broad Organizational Structure of IC0902
Working Group Structure of IC0902 Work in IC0902 is classified into the following Working Groups: WG1: Single link adaptation WG2: Definition of cognitive mechanisms taking advantage of cooperation of devices in spatial proximity WG3: Extension of cognition to the whole network WG4: Intersystem cooperation and coexistence under both technical and standardization/regulation points of view WG5: Introduction of cognition above the network layer into devices; exploring the definition of a cross-layer cognitive engine Additional topics apply to more than one WG. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) deal with such topics. SIGs currently defined are: SIG1: Information/knowledge representation languages SIG2: Learning and artificial intelligence SIG3: Mobility management for cognitive wireless networks SIG4: Positioning
