Children s Law Committee SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES by order of presentation Patricia S. Ravenhorst SC Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Greenville, SC Patricia (Tricia) Ravenhorst serves as the first General Counsel of the SC Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA) where she provides legal support for the organization; legal technical assistance and education to SCCADVASA s 22 member organizations and other professional partners and management of SCCADVASA s contract and pro bono attorney program. Prior to joining SCCADVASA, Tricia served as the Director and Attorney of the SC Victim Assistance Network s (SCVAN) Immigrant Victim Program, where she established the organization s specialized legal and supportive services to immigrant survivors of crime and the SC Immigrant Victim Coalition, which brings together professionals throughout the state working with immigrant survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and human trafficking. Ms. Ravenhorst has been training attorneys, criminal justice professionals and the community on the unique legal needs of survivors of crime; immigration and human trafficking for over 15 years. Tricia earned her Juris Doctor and Master of Arts in Political Science/Certification in Latin American Studies from Duke University and her Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from Florida State University. Ms. Ravenhorst is licensed to practice before both federal and state courts in South Carolina and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the National Association for Victim s Rights Attorneys. Prior to joining SCVAN, Ms. Ravenhorst practiced employment and immigration law at the Wyche Law Firm in Greenville, South Carolina. Her prior work experience also includes internships with the South African Secretariat for Safety and Security in Pretoria, South Africa. In honor of her work with immigrant victims, Ms. Ravenhorst received the Greenville County Guardian ad Litem Program s Ethel M. Piper Angel Award ; was named as one of Greenville s Best and Brightest Under 35 by the Greenville Magazine and as one of Greenville s Most Beautiful Women by Greenville s TALK Magazine; received the Riley Institute s Diversity Leadership Award for International Diversity and the SC Lawyer s Weekly Leadership in Law Award; and is member of the 2012 Class of the Liberty Fellowship.

Heather S. Weiss S.C. Attorney General s Office Heather just finished her appointment by the Governor as the Solicitor for the Fifth Judicial Circuit and has returned to her work at the Attorney General s Office. Heather has served as a manager for the South Carolina Attorney General s Office working in General Prosecution and State Grand Jury since January of 2011. Currently, she supervises the Special Prosecution Unit focusing on special victims and officer involved cases and well as the programming for the Violence Against Women Act division and Human Trafficking Task Force. She has had the opportunity to prosecute murders, human trafficking, child abuse, domestic violence, insurance fraud, narcotics and public corruption throughout the state of South Carolina. Prior to coming to work with the Attorney General, she was an Assistant Solicitor for the Fifth Circuit Solicitor s Office in Columbia, South Carolina. She began prosecuting immediately after her graduation from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. As an Assistant Solicitor, Heather served as Special City Prosecutor to the City of Columbia, Domestic Violence Court Coordinator for Richland County, and eventually focused her work on narcotics cases and violent crimes. Heather is currently appointed by the Governor to serve on the Child Fatality Advisory Committee and Domestic Violence Advisory Committee. She was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Kimaka Nichols-Graham S.C. Legal Services Greenville, SC Kimaka Nichols-Graham is the Managing Attorney of the Greenville Office, Managing Attorney of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and the Education Unit Head for South Carolina Legal Services where she has worked for 20 years practicing primarily family and education law. South Carolina Legal Services provides civil legal services to low income families. As the Managing Attorney in Greenville, she is responsible for the provision of civil legal services in Anderson, Greenville, Pickens, and Oconee counties, the quality of legal services provided, and maintaining connections with the community and private bar. As the Education Unit Head, Mrs. Nichols-Graham has represented clients in education cases across the state, trains attorneys to practice education law, and works to develop this practice area at legal services. Mrs. Nichols- Graham attended Winthrop University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She attended Rutgers University and earned a Master of Science in Public Policy with a concentration in Education Policy. She also attended the University of South Carolina, School of Law and earned a Juris Doctor. Mrs. Nichols-Graham is the 2014 Ellen T. Hines Smith South Carolina Legal Services Lawyer of the Year, a past recipient of the South Carolina Bar s Young Lawyer of the Year Award, and a past Commissioner for the South Carolina Supreme Court Commission on CLE & Specialization. Mrs. Nichols-Graham serves on the South Carolina Supreme Court Family Court Docket Committee, SCBAR Children s Law Committee, the SCBAR Education Law Committee, the South Carolina Children s Justice Act Task Force, and on the advisory board of The Center for Educational Equity (CEE). Mrs. Nichols-Graham is a member of the Greenville Bar Association, the South Carolina Black Lawyers Association, the

Donald James Sampson Society, and the Greenville (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is married to Hakim Graham, they have one daughter, and they attend Bethlehem Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina. Dr. Jenny Savitz-Smith Dr. Jenny Savitz-Smith, has been a practicing professional counselor since 2000. She began her work at The Nurturing Center in Columbia and at The Children s Place in Aiken where she worked with children and families with abuse dynamics in the families. She worked at times with solely the children of trauma, sometimes only the parents and in parent/child therapy. She began a small independent practice concurrent with her agency work, with a bachelor s degree in Child Development and Family Studies from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it only seemed natural that she would work with children and therefore became quickly acquainted with the Family Court system as it related to the family systems with which she was working. After becoming acquainted with the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, she immersed herself in a four-day long training learning about tender years, treating therapists roles, coparenting and alienation. In order to keep a balance in her practice, Jenny also works hard to balance her Court Involved Cases with cases of treating adolescents and above with anxiety and depression as well as other diagnoses that adolescents and adults. She does still see some children but mostly within the context of the family. Her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from The University of South Carolina with a cognate in Marriage and Family counseling has prepared her to work with persons of all ages going through trauma, family and career situations, normal growth and development issues as well as psychopathology Dr. Savitz-Smith relies on a varied practice so as not to develop compassion fatigue and to do her best work. Dr. Marc J. Harari Comprehensive Psychological Services, LLC Dr. Harari is the owner and founder of Comprehensive Psychological Services, LLC. He has been practicing as a licensed psychologist since 2003. Dr. Harari obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Akron s APA Approved Counseling Psychology Program, and he completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of South Carolina s Counseling and Human Development Center. From 2000-2005, he served as a Program Director and Treatment Director for the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Harari also started to perform private practice work in 2004. Comprehensive Psychological Services, LLC has been in business since 2005. The staff presently includes two psychological associates (Dr. Nevelyn Trumpeter and Dr. Darren Woodlief), psychometricians, and administrative assistants. Services performed at CPS include a wide range of psychological assessment and evaluations for children, adolescents and adults. Specific areas of focus include child custody, parenting capacity, mental health diagnostic examinations, capacity and mitigating circumstances in criminal cases. Dr. Harari also performs

expert witness testimony, forensic consultation and presentations pertaining to psychological assessment and forensic psychology. Education: The University of Akron, Ph.D. 2002 Rutgers University, B.A. 1994 Representative Peter M. McCoy, Jr. McCoy & Stokes, LLC Charleston, SC Peter McCoy s legal background has given him the experience and knowledge needed to vigorously defend the rights of his clients in all courts in South Carolina. Whether it is a criminal defense case, DUI, family law matter, or a personal injury case, Peter McCoy is prepared to handle all the needs of his clients. During law school, Peter clerked for the Ninth Circuit Solicitor s Office during his summer and winter breaks from school. After graduation, he was hired as an Assistant Solicitor for the Ninth Circuit by Solicitor Ralph Hoisington. After spending more than five years as a criminal prosecutor, Peter has handled thousands of drug, drug trafficking, murder, manslaughter, armed robbery, white collar, DUI, and felony DUI crimes in Charleston County. He started off his work as a prosecutor by being the lead DUI prosecutor for Charleston County. In this capacity, he prosecuted countless DUI and Felony DUI cases throughout the Ninth Circuit. For his remaining tenure as a criminal prosecutor, Peter handled violent, gun, and drug crimes. He has extensive court room experience having handled numerous jury trials for some of the most serious crimes in Charleston County. In 2010, when Peter was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives he left the Solicitor s Office and opened up his own firm. Since entering private practice, Peter has practiced extensively in Magistrate, Municipal, General Sessions, Common Pleas, and Federal District Court handling cases that range from speeding tickets, to serious criminal felony charges, to numerous civil disputes ranging from car accidents to libel/slander defamation suits. In September 2011, Peter and Joshua P. Stokes merged their individual practices to form McCoy & Stokes, LLC. In April 2013, Peter was one of seven lawyers throughout South Carolina selected as a 2013 Super Lawyers Rising Star in the practice area of Criminal Defense Law. Mr. McCoy also holds the highest peer-reviewed, professional rating ( AV Preeminent ) available from Martindale-Hubbell reflecting a combination of Very High General Ethical Standards and overall Legal Ability. Peter s years at the Solicitor s office coupled with his service as an elected official have earned him the reputation as a honest, fair, and hard working trial lawyer. He has been awarded the Key to the Town of James Island, he sits on the advisory board to the Save the Morris Island Lighthouse, and is a regular lecturer at the College of Charleston, the Citadel, and Trident Technical College on the topics of Criminal Law and Local Politics.

April L. Gremillion Law Office of April L Gremillion, LLC Moderator April Gremillion is the current chair of the SC Bar s Children s Law Committee. April s passion for children s issues not only motivated her to join the committee but also to establish her family law practice in 2011, after working for a large, regional real estate firm for many years. While her current private practice consists primarily of guardian ad litem appointments in family court, she also represents clients in divorces, adoptions and foreclosures. In addition, April volunteers at Midlands Mediation Center as a certified family court mediator. April received her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law and was admitted to practice law in South Carolina in 2003. During and after law school, April worked for a small, general practice firm here in Columbia. April is also licensed to practice law in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas. When not practicing law, April enjoys cooking, traveling, kayaking, tennis, walking her dog and spending time with her family. Jennifer J. Hollingsworth Nexsen Pruet, LLC Course Planner Jennifer Hollingsworth is a litigator in the White Collar Crime and Government Investigations Group at Nexsen Pruet, LLC in Columbia. Jennifer has represented individuals and businesses in numerous courts and forums, including South Carolina s appellate courts, circuit court, probate court, family court, administrative law court, magistrate s court, and federal district court, as well as agency appeal forums. In addition to her litigation work, Jennifer devotes a substantial amount of her time to investigations and compliance work, including an active Title IX practice and representing individuals and businesses subject to various government inquiries. Jennifer serves on the Children s Law Committee (as co-chair of Legal Education), the Judicial Qualifications Committee and as a trial coach and scoring judge for Middle School Mock Trial at the South Carolina Bar. As a trained social worker, Jennifer s passion for advocacy is matched with her commitment to superior service and professionalism.
