Interactive Baby Bibs Interactive Playtime Appliqués is one of the most user-friendly design programs that you will ever use. With the use of the slide bars you can create a design(s) that will have immediate appeal to the young at heart. The bear and dog designs will start to dance before your eyes. Use anyone of the Appliqué friends to add that special touch to your project. Skill Level: Easy Created by: Diane Kron, Software Project Specialist Supplies: Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machine Interactive Playtime Appliqués by Designer s Gallery (Installed) 4 Coordinating fat quarters or fabric scraps Designer s Gallery Project: Interactive Baby Bibs Page 1 of 5

Sewing and embroidery thread Baby Lock Tear-Away Soft stabilizer Water soluble pen Temporary spray adhesive Cotton batting Instructions: Design Frog Appliqué: 1. Open the Interactives program by clicking on the icon on the desktop. 2. If you have more than one Interactive program installed on the same computer, you will need to scroll down to view the Interactive options. They will be shown in alphabetical order. Select Playtime Appliqué, as shown in the Red box below. 3. Select the Appliqué tab, as shown in the red rectangle box in the diagram below. 4. Open the appliqué options by clicking on the down arrow. Select the frog. The frog will be placed on the workspace. 5. To size the frog, click and slide the scroll bar next to Scale. Set the size to 99mm x 95mm. The size will fit in the 100 x 100 hoop. Designer s Gallery Project: Interactive Baby Bibs Page 2 of 5

6. Click on the Save icon to save the design in your machine s format and then to a location of your choice. Design Butterfly Appliqué: 1. Repeat the steps from the Frog Appliqué directions, with the exception of selecting the Butterfly 2 design. 2. To change the colors in the butterfly 2 design, click on the Colors icon on the top toolbar. 3. Located on the left side of the workspace will be listed color family choices. Select Easter. 4. Slide the Permutation slider to select the color order in the butterfly. 5. Click on the Save icon to save the design in your machine s format then to a location of your choice. Design Heart Appliqué: 1. Repeat the steps from the Frog Appliqué directions, with the exception of selecting the Heart Lg design. 2. We will now merge another heart and place it in the center of the first heart. Click on the Show Interactive Design List & Controls. Click on Playtime Appliqué to the left of the workspace. Click on the down arrow and choose the Heart Sm. Designer s Gallery Project: Interactive Baby Bibs Page 3 of 5

Left click on the Heart Sm and move the heart so it is centered within the large heart as shown in the diagram. 3. Click on the Save icon to save the design in your machine format then to a location of your choice. Embroidery of Bibs: Embroidery directions will be the same for each of the bibs. Choose your colors according to those color stops. The first color will be the placement stitch, the second color will be the tack down stitch and the third color stop will be the cover stitch. 1. Using the Bib Template, cut three bibs from three of the fabrics. 2. Hoop the Baby Lock Tear-Away Soft stabilizer. 3. Spray the stabilizer with temporary spray adhesive. 4. Mark the center of each of the bibs using a water soluble pen. 5. Place the center point on the bib in the center of the hoop, using the side markings on the hoop as your guide. 6. Embroider the design. When the machine stops after the first color, place a contrasting fabric (appliqué fabric) over the placement line. Embroider the second color. When the machine stops, remove the hoop from the machine. Trim away the appliqué fabric close to the tack down stitch. Place the hoop back onto the machine and continue to embroider the cover stitch. Assembly of Bibs: 1. Cut three pieces of batting the same size as the bibs. 2. For the backing, cut three pieces the same size as the bib sections from the contrasting fabrics. Designer s Gallery Project: Interactive Baby Bibs Page 4 of 5

3. Layer the sections in this order backing, batting and appliquéd bib pieces. Quilt the pieces as desired. The samples were echo quilted, free-hand quilted and the third was not quilted. 4. Cut enough one inch strips on the bias to form the bias tape around the bib and to form the ties. 5. Fold the strips in half lengthwise and press. Fold one side inward to the pressed line and iron. Place the opposite edge to the outer edge of the bib, with the right side of the bias tape to the top side of the bib, and stitch ¼ from the edge. Do not attach to the neck edge in this step. Fold the bias tape to the back and top stitch. 6. For the ties, take another section of the bias strips and fold in half lengthwise and press. Fold one side in to the ironed line and press. Determine the center of the bias strip and place the center point at the center of the neck edge, with the right side of the bias strip to the top side of the bib & stitch ¼ from the edge. To finish the ties, fold each of the edges inward and stitch ¼ from the edge.
