After many hours of editing, the Strategic Plan for our club has been revised. Special thanks to the Strategic Planning Committee, lead by Roger Cook. When you see him, please thank him for all his work. Preparations for the Golf Tournament are progressing nicely. Much thanks to Judy and John Gho for all their hard work. Goal is to raise the bar and make more money this year from this wonderful Golf Tournament. Hope a lot of us can attend the Golf Dinner on Tuesday, May 8 th. Check out the Raffle Prizes. We have heard that Mary Taverna and myself received some great prizes. Special thanks to all those who work on the Golf Tournament. Sometimes it takes a village. This is one of our bigger events. End of school year is just around the corner. Special thanks to the volunteers that have participated in BUGs and K-Kids. What a difference you have made in the lives of the children in Lincoln. Edy

April 2018 Page 4 K-Kids Make Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Contributed by Mary Luciano At our last meeting the K-Kids made over 70 Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches for the Salt Mine. The Kids love making sandwiches for those less fortunate. With eager hands, Sandwiches were made. As part of our process for making Sandwiches, we learned about sanitary issues. The tables needed to be cleaned first. Each time a new table was cleaned, they needed to use a new paper towel. Using the same towel is a health issuespreading germs from one table to the next. All of the K-Kids needed to wash their hands and use plastic gloves to make the sandwiches. Of course, each K-Kid got to make a Sandwich at the end for themselves. Clean-up is always fun. There is a lot of Peanut Butter and Jelly everywhere. With helping hands, tables were cleaned for breakfast the next morning. This is an inexpensive project for the kids. Over 70 sandwiches for under 50c a piece. Special thanks to all the K-Kids who made these Sandwiches.
April 2018 Page 5 BUGs Homework Session Contributed by Beth Roberts We are quickly approaching the end of the school year. What a joy it has been for those of us on the BUGS team. We have been able to work with 15 wonderful children and have watched them learn and grow over the last several months. The help we give includes reading, spelling, and perhaps the most challenging - MATH. I actually love math, but I have to say "new math" is definitely different and and not natural for those of us that went to school many years ago. Nonetheless, I think it helps us keep our brains active and absolutely helps the kids and that's what we're all here for... This year one of our children is "graduating" to middle school. We will sure miss her. We've known her for the last 3 years and have seen her develop into a lovely young woman - pink braces and all... We will celebrate her graduation at our year-end party which will have a fiesta theme. We will have great food, fun games, a piñata, and each child will leave with a gift and a back-pack filled with supplies for next year. If you want to really make a difference and have a wonderful time while you're at it, consider joining BUGS next year. We work with the children 3 days a week for about 1 1/2 hours and each of us only commits to one day. Best hour and a half you'll ever spend I guarantee it...

April 2018 Page 7 A Star Is Born Award Contributed by Dottie Doctor & Bob Day Dottie Doctor and Bob Day have created a Kiwanis Club of Lincoln Foothills Award called A Star Is Born Award. The concept and story behind the Award is that about 15 years ago, Dottie worked in a small office, and for some reason felt the need to acknowledge people doing nice things for others, so the A Star Award Was Born was started, she left it on someone's desk asking that they enjoy it for a while and then pass it on to someone else, to say Thank You and You Are Special and any other kind message. Bec Cannistraci gave Dottie the idea for the club version of A Star Is Born Award because he gave her, his Service Hours well before she asked for them and then indicated (in jest) that he deserved some kind of award for being first, and so a new A Star Is Born Award was conceived. It's intent is to spread sunshine, and we notice, and we care, we hope our members look at it that way and that it makes us all smile, and know how much the club appreciates what you do for the club. The A Star Is Born Award was Designed and Sculpted by Internationally renowned and acclaimed Sculptor Bob Day, (well maybe just in Lincoln, no, maybe just in our Club, no, well maybe...). April 2018 Page 8 Phoenix High School Contributed by Mary Luciano Phoenix High School was established in 1978, first accredited in 1992 and serves as the Continuation High School for the Western Placer Unified School District. It provides an alternative education program for students in grades 10 through 12 or ages 16 to 18. The School is located adjacent to Lincoln High School.
April 2018 Page 9 Big Day of Giving Will You Help Us Find The Third Third? Contributed by Dan Germain The 2018 Big Day of Giving is one week away. For Kiwanis Family House, the $90,000 target we have set to raise in the 24-hour period of giving is very much a stretch goal. Because we have been diligently setting the table for this event and communicating with our reliable supporters, we can expect to witness the following with a reasonable degree of confidence: We will reach the first third of our goal with donations from individuals and Kiwanis clubs that have been our long-time supporters. The inspirational efforts of our Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs will help us achieve the second third of our charitable donation goal. Notably, the clubs in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Circle K, our stellar university-level team, will deliver the proceeds from their fundraising efforts over the past year. We will only succeed in reaching our ultimate target of $90,000 if you and those among the initial two-thirds help us build the third third. This final third will be new donors whom you and I contact. They will be members of our families, our neighbors, our friends, our club members, our colleagues. They will help us complete the third third because we will ask them to donate and lend a helping hand and a comforting shoulder to families enduring medical crises. I can hear some people asking why they should donate on May 3rd as opposed to any other day of the year. One reason is to help Kiwanis Family House leverage donations to help obtain available prize challenge money. Every year, dozens of corporations, businesses, funders, media outlets, civic organizations, and leaders rally to sponsor prizes and engage with nonprofit partners. Over $50,000 in prize dollars will be available for participating nonprofits. Perhaps more importantly, the Big Day of Giving is a small moment in time each year when this region takes a day to celebrate the spirit of giving. The 24-hour online giving challenge brings together the region's nonprofit community to help raise much needed unrestricted funds and shine a spotlight on the work nonprofits do to make the Sacramento region the place we call home. To meet our strategic goals and ensure our future of serving families, it is critical for Kiwanis Family House to enlist new financial supporters for a meaningful experience that lasts well beyond those 24-hours. So I am asking each of you, our loyal supporters, to help us meet that challenge. Like, Comment, Tweet, and Share our posts on social media. April 2018 Page 11 CNH Division 44 Council Meetings (DCMs) DCMs are held on the second Monday of the month at the Free Methodist Church, 8790 Oak Avenue, Orangevale CA, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Dinner is served at 5:30 pm and the meeting starts at about 6:00 pm. Cost is $10.00 for Dinner, or $5.00 for Dessert Only. The Division Council Meetings or DCMs as members commonly refer to it, are meetings where members from all fifteen clubs in Division 44 get together to share successes, plans, concerns and have fun. All members are welcome as are guests. We are frequently joined by representatives from other Divisions, our Key Club & Circle K Club Division Leadership. The next DCM Meeting on Monday, May 14th, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Sacramento Suburban. Community Service Hours In April, 21 Members performed 417.5 Community Service Hours, directly serving the Community of Lincoln. Community Service during the year includes: BUGs, K-Kids, Healthy Snacks, Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School, Sheridan Elementary School, First Street Elementary School, Creekside Oaks Elementary School, Lincoln Police Activities League, Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, Fundraising Events: Valentines Dinner & Dance, Golf Tournament & Fireworks Sales. Meeting Attendance Attendance for the April 4th Meeting was 19 Members, 1 Speaker, and 1 Guest. Attendance for the April 20th Meeting was 17 Members, Lt. Governor Laird Smith, Past Lt Governor John Brummer, and 3 Speakers from the Placer County Grand Jury.
