Destined to Make a Difference

Cam Essex photo Peppy San Badger x Miss Dual Doc Destined to Make a Difference by Sally Harrison Two days before he died at the venerable age of 33,, one of cutting s most influential sires, became the oldest living stallion to sire a limited age event champion. On that September day, at the Silverado Arena in Weatherford, Texas, not only did his threeold daughter Tears From Heaven win the 2018 Brazos Bash Futurity, but two of his granddaughters produced the second and third-placed futurity finalists, as well. Such is the influence of that generations of his progeny have excelled and still excel today, with his unique combination of cow savvy, studied intelligence, and smooth style. Beginnings President Ronald Reagan and arrived in California on the same day in 1985, Good Friday, April 5th. Reagan had flown to his ranch in the Santa Ynez Mountains for a vacation break over Easter weekend, while, a blaze-faced chestnut colt, greeted the world on wobbly legs at the Ward Ranch in Tulare, Calif. was sired by Peppy San Badger, the 1977 NCHA Futurity Open champion, and out of Miss Dual Doc, a double-bred Doc Bar mare. Her breeder, Greg Ward, had shown Doc s Remedy, the sire of Miss Dual Doc, to tie Doc s Oak with the third-highest score in the 1976 NCHA Futurity. Tom Reidy, Houston, Tex., purchased from Ward in December 1987 and put him in the hands of trainer Larry Holley, who

showed the colt as a semi-finalist in the 1988 NCHA Futurity and as reserve champion of the 1989 Memphis Futurity. At the same time, Memphis businessman and non-pro competitor Bobby Pidgeon was looking for a replacement for his sidelined four-year-old. It was Pidgeon s trainer Pat Earnheart who suggested that he check out, the colt creating a buzz at the Memphis Futurity. When I was young, I did a little work for Tom Reidy in Memphis, remembered Pidgeon. So I called him and he told me I could go look at the horse and if I wanted him, he was mine. Tom Reidy is a man of his word. I said I wanted him and that was it. Right from the start, Dual Pep rarely missed a beat for Pidgeon or Earnheart. On the rare occasion he failed to make a finals, he would nevertheless draw checks in the semi-finals. In 1989, he won the Open Bonanza and qualified for the Non-Pro semi-finals. At the NCHA Super Stakes he placed third in the Open and was a Non- Pro semi-finalist. At the end of the first year, had placed in 10 finals and seven semi-finals with Pidgeon and Earnheart. In 1990, in addition to showing him, Pidgeon made the decision to breed Dual Pep to his own mares, and to also offer him to the public. The good-natured stallion took his breeding obligations and a full show schedule in stride. Nyoka Johnson, who worked for Earnheart and later for Bar H Ranche, remembered being short at times for help during shows and leading and a mare into the loping area at the same time. Tears From Heaven & Michael Cooper 2018 Brazos Bash People would get excited and say, You can t do that, Johnson remembered. But I did it. He was such a gentleman and such an honest horse. Everybody loved him. Even trainers hugged him. And you don t see that very often. One time at a show someone asked Pat if he was going to take to the training pen and Buster Welch, who had been standing there, asked, What could you possibly teach him? He was a good un, Welch said, recently. Back then, you didn t have a cutting won until you beat. Pat Earnheart and Dual Pep launched the 1990 show season with the Classic championship win at the Augusta Futurity, followed by a reserve championship in the Memphis Classic, where Pidgeon and placed third in the non-pro. Wins followed in the Bonanza Classic Non-Pro and the PCCHA Classic Open, as well as reserve championships in The Non-Pro Classic with Pidgeon, the Breeders Invitational Cutting Classic with Earnheart, and reserve championships with both Earnheart and Pidgeon at the Las Vegas Futurity Classic. He s the type of horse that draws cattle to him. said Pat Earnheart, following the 1990 Breeders Cutting Classic. He s so smart he doesn t let the cattle outfigure him. He s got a brilliant mind. I never thought I d own a stud, said Pidgeon. I didn t like studs. Then I bought. It was the luck of the draw. He s never let me down. He s good-minded and a very easy horse to ride. He s real intelligent; he pays attention to his business and doesn t let outside things distract him. It s a pleasure for him to do it. Pidgeon never forgot the time he lost his left stirrup, with the first turn on his first cow in the finals of the 1991 NCHA Challenge. After about ten seconds of working, I had a chance to maybe get my foot back in the stirrup. But I moved my hand when I was trying to do it, so I forgot that and just rode him for the rest of my time Pat Earnheart & 1990 NCHA Summer Classic Leo San Mr San Peppy Peppy Belle Peppy San Badger Grey Badger III Sugar Badger Sugar Townley, chestnut s. 1985 Doc Bar Doc s Remedy Teresa Tivio Miss Dual Doc Doc Bar Miss Brooks Bar St Mary s Dream Bobby Pidgeon & 1990 NCHA Summer Classic

his horses fit all types of trainers. They were strictly cowhorses and they encompassed the two different styles of Little Peppy horses and Doc Bar horses. Shortly after Hansma agreed to work for Pidgeon, he asked his brother Paul to join him. When I hired Winston, I named the place Bar H Ranche after the Hansma family, said Pidgeon. You can t have a real successful program without some really good people like Winston and Paul. I let Winston pick all the mares. That s how we got CD Olena. Winston is the one who said to breed CD Chica San Badger to Doc O Lena. Ultimately, CD Olena proved an excellent cross on daughters and a new era evolved for Bar H Ranche and the Hansmas. Among CD Olena s top performers was Sister CD, foaled in 2002 out of the daughter Little Baby Sister. Bred by Bar H Ranche and trained by Paul Hansma, Sister CD earned more than $835,000. Altogether, the 16 foals sired by out of CD Olena daughters earned $928,730, for an average of $58,046. Two years after Winston and CD Olena won the NCHA Futurity Open championship, Paul Hansma claimed the Futurity title riding Playboy McCrae, a gelding owned and bred by Kay Floyd, who was also the owner of Freckles Playboy, the sire of Playboy McCrae s dam. The same year that Winston won the NCHA Futurity for Bar H Ranche on CD Olena, he also placed sixth on Smokin Dually out of Joses Sunrise, while Paul showed Olena Dually, out of the Doc O Lena daughwith one stirrup. That s just how smooth he is. And if I hadn t gotten a penalty when I moved my hand, I would have marked a 22, instead of a 19. Nevertheless, Pidgeon and won the event. That same year, before their NCHA Challenge win, Dual Pep and Pidgeon had also earned reserve championship titles at the Abilene Western and the Memphis Futurity, In addition, and Winston Hansma placed in both the NCHA Challenge and the Pacific Coast Challenge finals. By the end of his show career, which he ended on a win in the 1991 Southern Futurity Classic with Winston Hansma aboard, had claimed eight wins, 10 seconds, and eight thirds in 37 open and non-pro limited age events, an average of 70 percent, earning $313,192. Winston Hansma & 1995 NCHA Futurity Reserve Champion Dually Lena Preserving the Heritage In 1991, Pidgeon established Bar H Ranche in Weatherford as a training facility and brought the young Canadian Winston Hansma on board as ranch manager and trainer. When Hansma came to Bar H Ranche, Dual Pep was a six-year-old being bred to his first crop of mares, while still competing. He was without a doubt the NCHA World Champion Dual Rey Me & Jeremy Barwick best horse I have ever been around, said Hansma, in retrospect, 27 years later. He was a unique individual, so easy-going and forgiving. It took me about 10 days to get with him when I came to Bar H, and after that he was the same every time I rode him. He always tried and was so pleasurable. He taught me a lot. And I think he influenced a lot of other trainers because Paul Hansma & 1996 NCHA Futurity Champion Playboy McCrae

ter Miss Sabrina Lena, as a finalist, as well. Both Smokin Dually and Olena Dually were from s first crop and would go on after the 1994 NCHA Futurity to become two of s leading money earners. Smokin Dually and Winston earned reserve championships in the 1995 NCHA Super Stakes, the Augusta Futurity and the Abilene Western, and would score among the top open finalists in many other 1996 and 1997 events, where Pidgeon showed Smokin Dually successfully, as well. Olena Dually, winner of more than $300,000 under Paul Hansma and non-pro owner Charles Spence and his trainer, Matt Gaines, was one of s first offspring to prove the powerful Doc O Lena cross that by 2018 had produced earners of $4.3 million, including Dually Lena and Tapt Twice. Dually Lena, from Dual Pep s second crop, was out of Bingos Lena, by Doc O Lena. Winston showed the gelding as reserve champion of the 1995 NCHA Futurity, where non-pro owner Cookie Coleman placed fifth in the Non- Pro finals. In 1996 Hansma and Dually Lena took third in the NCHA Super Stakes, and Hansma and Coleman rode the gelding to earn reserve and win the championship in their respective divisions, at the NCHA Gelding Stakes. Tapt Twice, by out of Tap O Lena, by Doc Olena, earned $285,222. Then the talented mare outbred herself with her High Brow Cat daughter Dont Look Twice, an all-time leading money earner of $825,546, who in turn produced $420,000 earner Dont Stopp Believin, by s $1.8 million producer Autumn Boon & Bill Freeman $1.4 million producer Tapt Twice & Phil Rapp leading son, Dual Rey. s most prolific cross has been with Smart Little Lena daughters, who when bred to him have produced 145 performers with a total of $5.8 million in earnings and an average of $40,168. Dual Rey Me, a 1999 gelding owned and shown by Jeremy and Candace Barwick, tops the field and is s leading money earner. A threetime NCHA Open World Champion, out of Miss Smart Rey Jay, by Smart Little Lena. Dual Rey Me earned $818,177. Autumn Boon, sired by out of all-time leading producer Royal Blue Boon, by Boon Bar, has produced earners of $1.8 million. And the list goes on. With offspring earnings of $25 million, ranks fifth on the roster of all-time leading sires and is the only stallion among the top five with a son on the list, Dual Rey, with offspring earnings of $37 million, who died earlier this year. John Brasseaux photo purchased by Dottie and Bobby Hill of Glen Rose, Tex. continued to thrive at Alpha Equine Breeding Center, where he enjoyed being turned out in the company of his friend Lucky, a mare owned by Nyoka Johnson. I fell in love with at the Augusta Futurity, said Johnson, nearly 30 years after first seeing perform. He was God s greatest creation. He was so kind and had such dignity and presence. When people would visit, they would always ask, Who is that horse? He was that special. Everybody loved him. After the Hills purchased him, they had considered moving to their beautiful ranch, home to many outstanding broodmares, including NCHA Futurity Open champion Classy CD Cat, bred and owned by Dottie Hill, and to Ben Emison & Kay & Dr. Baker & Nyoka Johnson &
