Ricerca e Innovazione Responsabile Research and Innovation are fundamental for economic growth and to gain competitive position Innovation alone, however, is not enough if not associated with sustainable growth. Italian Association for Industrial Research

The demand from the society Innovation must be safe for human health and the environment (EHS). Risk analysis needs to establish the appropriate procedures to assure it. Equally important is to ensure that innovation addresses also societal ethical needs and challenges (ELSA) in ways that are acceptable to the range of stakeholders. More information is necessary. Italian Association for Industrial Research 4
Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) RRI is a transparent, interactive process by which societal actors and innovators become mutually responsive to each other with a view to the (ethical) acceptability, sustainability and societal desirability of the innovation process and its marketable products. (Renè von Schomberg, EC - 2011) Italian Association for Industrial Research 5
La dimensione ed i pilastri della RRI Dimension and pillars of RRI* Norms and values - Engage society more broadly - Increase openness and transparency of scientific results Actors Activitie s - Ensure gender equality - Promote formal and informal education Technology & market areas - Take into account the ethical dimension * Origin: M. Quinn, European Commission, 2012 Italian Association for Industrial Research
The actors of RRI Individual researchers Research organizations (both publicly and privately funded) Users of research and innovation (industry in first place) Civil society actors Social scientists and ethicists Policy makers and public bodies (from local authorities to regional structures) Professional bodies Legislators Educational organizations (e.g. schools, universities) Dialogue amongst all the stakeholders is paramount Italian Association for Industrial Research
RRI along the value chain RESEARCH MARKET Knowledge Materials & Equipments Prototypes & Products Solutions & Services Societal Challenges APPLIED RESEARCH & DEPLOYMENT Research and ethics principles/good practices, risk assessment, value/safety by design Codes of conducts, stewardship initiatives, CSR Regulation, standard, certification, labeling Anticipate/understand consumer desirability/acceptance, possible negative impact Italian Association for Industrial Research 8
The Pillars of European Strategy for Growth SUSTAINABLE GROWTH Excellence in Science H 2020 Leadership in Industrial Technologies Drivers of innovation: Grand challenges, Emerging Technologies/Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) Italian Association for Industrial Research 9
The challenge - based approach of H2020 Health, demographic change and wellbeing; Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the Bioeconomy; Secure, clean and efficient energy; Smart, green and integrated transport; Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials; Europe in a changing world - inclusive, innovative and reflective societies; Secure societies - protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens. http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/en/h2020-section/societal-challenges Italian Association for Industrial Research 10 10
RRI in Horizon 2020 "RRI is an inclusive approach to research and innovation (R&I), to ensure that societal actors work together during the whole research and innovation process. It aims to better align both the process and outcomes of R&I, with the values, needs and expectations of European society. In general terms, RRI implies anticipating and assessing potential implications and societal expectations with regard to research and innovation."[1] [1] Science with and for Society, 2013. H2020 funding in 2014 2020 will amount to some 80 billion Euro. References to RRI included in articles 12,13, 15, 16 of H2020 The adoption of RRI principles amongst the binding criteria the selection for funding of the proposals Development of actions and tools for RRI: Science with and for Society, Social Science and Humanities and Societal Challenge 6 (inclusive, innovative Societies) Corporate Social responsibility action strongly recommended by the EC Italian Association for Industrial Research 1212
Activities of RRI Policy options to promote RRI (examples) RRI Criteria for public (EU) funding Coordination amongst Member States (develop and share guidelines & best practices) Foster education & researchers careers on RRI topics Foster stakeholders & public engagement to steer R&I processes (toward RRI goals) Codes of conduct for RRI Development of international standards (such as ISO 26000) Public procurament for project with high societal impact Promotion of ethical funds Italian Association for Industrial Research 13
Why RRI in industry Ex. of contested innovation Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) (environment impact concerns) Smart energy meters (privacy issues) Electronic health records (privacy issues) GMOs (environment impact concerns) Robotics (Dual use) Ex. of well received innovation Bio-based products ehealth: e.g. medical imaging Sustainable construction Recycling technologies Privacy enhancing and security technologies Early societal intervention may enable anticipation of positive and negative impacts Italian Association for Industrial Research 14
PROVIDING ETHICALLY ACCEPTABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND SOCIETALLY DESIRABLE INNOVATION CAN ANSWER THE DEMAND OF THE SOCIETY. MAKE THE INVESTMENTS IN R&I MORE EFFICIENT. PROVIDE A COMPETIVE ADVANTAGE AND ENSURE PROFITABILITY. Main focus of industry is currently on EHS impacts Italian Association for Industrial Research 15
What should industry do Make access to information as early as possible Provide a rich picture about benefit Show workings - be up-front about accountability Support independent oversight Communicate better and honestly Italian Association for Industrial Research 16
