He defeated Alex Wolf in their individual game, but lost to Ruifeng Li, the brilliant Texas kid who owns Arkansas. Davis also won the state championship last year. The tournament was held at a beautiful hotel on Lake Hamilton. The Arkansas Chess Association meeting took place Sunday morning. The minutes are included in this issue. http://arkansaschess.net Arkansas Chess Association Officers Pres. - Richard Kohl Sec/Treas. - Stan Carter Vice Pres. - Ron Sanders ACN Editor - Bill Orton Send games and articles to abcritter@yahoo.com PGN games for this issue: http://www.ozarkia.net/chess/acn/acn2013.4fall.pgn Li,Ruifeng (2312) - Manchanda,Sameer (2140) US Open (6) 2013-08-02 (C11 [C13] French, Burn Variation) 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 nc3 dxe4 4 nxe4 nf6 5 bg5 be7 6 bxf6 gxf6 7 nf3 f5 8 nc3 a6 9 qd2 nd7?! this is not really consistent with a6 10 O-O-O b5 11 kb1 b4 12 ne2 (12 na4 +/= after maybe Qe3 and Be2 the Knight coud jump to c5) 12 bb7 13 qe3 nf6 14 ne5 nd5 15 qb3 O-O? +/-

ACN Fall 2013 2 of 10 Definitely castling into the attacking position. 16 rg1 bf6 17 g4 f4 18 bg2 rb8 19 ka1? I want to be able to take back with my e-pawn if he plays cd. (8 g6! was the correct way to do this, with a reasonable game, a Stonewall without a bad bishop. What I learned from this game: The queen needs to stay available to protect the queenside light squares. 9 qb3 qb6 (9 qc7?! 10 ng5 ke7 11 ndf3 (11 e4!? h6 12 nxe6) 11 h6 12 nh4) 10 qa4 ngf6) 9 qb3! Consistent, and suicidal. Now Chuck just rolls me. The opposite side castled position favors white, since (underappreciated by me) white's control of e5 snuffs out any black counter-attack on the kingside. $*+lt*vmt% $Oo+m+*Oo% $*+o+ow*+% $+*+o+o+*% $*+pp*+*+% $+q+*pn+*% $pp*n*ppp% $R*B*+rK*% (9 rb8 was probably best at this point.) 10 qa4 +- kb8 11 b4 g5 12 bb2 g4?
