3 The role of this book This resource is designed specifically for the basic facts component of the Numeracy Project. Most activity sheets are split into four sections: Prior Knowledge, Using Materials, Using Imaging and Number Properties. These activity sheets are designed to be used in conjunction with the explicit teaching of each skill. They are not designed to be given in the place of high quality teaching. School wide basic facts assessment resource The school wide basic facts resource at the back of this book includes basic facts assessment sheets for each stage (and/or group of stages) in the Numeracy Project. It also includes answers and a graph for each stage. The y-axis on all the graphs has been designed to best show student progression over time. To do this the intervals are not constant. The intervals at the top of the axis increase by one compared to the low and middle parts of the axis which vary between two and five depending on the graph. Each graph includes a suggested time limit. The following factors were taken into account when determining the suggested time limit. 1) Students fine motor development over time: Younger students take more time to record their responses. 2) Mastery (speed and accuracy): To demonstrate mastery students should not only be able to answer all questions correctly but also answer all questions quickly within a given timeframe.
