Operator Manual Transmitters Series KAT-... Analog transmitters in 2-wire technique
Important Safety Notes! In the case of non-observance of the installation and safety notes or improper use of the transmitter heavy or fatal injuries may occur. In the case of wrong assembly, faulty programming or inadequate voltage supply the output signal of the transmitter may be out of order, i.e. the current sensor condition is no longer given at the output. For a safe operation of the series KAT- transmitters proper packing, appropriate storage, professional installation, operation and maintenance are of the essence. Only professionally trained and qualified personnel should carry out installation, operation and maintenance. Special attention must be paid to the contents of this operator manual; the pertinent safety regulations for the installation and operation of electrical equipment, as well as the rules and regulations on explosion protection; the regulations, standards and rules mentioned in this operator manual apply in Germany. When operating the transmitters in other countries the pertinent national rules and regulations are to be observed. The transmitter has left the factory in impeccable condition. The mentioned safety notes must be strictly observed in order to assure the further operational safety of the unit. The operator has to make sure that all equipment connected to the transmitter meet the applicable regulations mentioned in the accident prevention regulation VBG 4. Please contact Rössel Messtechnik GmbH if you require further information regarding this operator manual. 2
Summary The transmitter converts the signal from a thermocouple, resistance thermometer or potentiometer into a standard signal of 4 20 ma. The non-linear characteristic line of the temperature sensor is given, depending on programming, to the output current tension-linear (KAT-T) resp. temperature-linear (KAT-W) or resistance-linear (KAT-P). Secure separation of contact-endangered electric circuits is only guaranteed if the connected equipment meets the requirements of norm VDE 0106 T.101 (basic requirements for secure separation). For spurious rejection and safety it is necessary to lay the supply cable separate from the contact-endangered electric circuits. Should this not be possible an additional insulation must be made. If grounding of intrinsically safe circuits to balance potential is needed from a measuring-technical point of view, it must be done at one point only. If an instrument with a certified intrinsically safe electrical circuit is connected to a KAT- transmitter, the intrinsic safety of the interconnection has to be documented according to VDE 0165/2.91. The maximum values shown in the conformity certificate must be observed! 4
Installation: 1. Open the cover or connection head. 2. Connect sensor and power supply. 3. Close cover or connection head. 4. Switch-on power supply. 5. Check functioning of transmitter. Load:measuring, instruments, recorder,... Power supply unit - + * Sensor input Sensor or simulator Important Note The minimum supply voltage at the terminals of the transmitter (see data sheet) must be ensured at all times. For load calculation always take into consideration the highest power consumption (see data sheet). Maintenance Attention! If any work has been carried out on an explosion-protected instrument by non-trained persons and by persons not authorized by the manufacturer, these instruments must be examined by an expert prior to renewed operation. This is not necessary if the work has been carried out by personel authorized by the manufacturer. Before operating the instrument safety measures regarding explosion protection must be carried out on the instruments and must be strictly adhered to! It must be assumed that hazard-free operation is no longer possible - if the transmitter shows visible damages; - if the transmitter does not work; - after longer storage under unfavourable conditions; - after tough conditions during transport. In these case the instrument is no longer safe to operate. It must immediately be taken out of service and be marked accordingly. The defective instrument should be sealed to avoid inadvertent use. 5

The transmitter KAT-W / KAT-T.. / KAT-P is designed in such a way that no maintenance is necessary. In the case of a malfunction a possible cause can be derived from the above indicated symptoms. Basically the power supply of the transmitter and all connected components should always be checked in a malfunction. In addition the sensor and its signal path should be checked. To check the functioning of the transmitter the sensor signal can be preset by a suitable simulator, and then the output signal can be measured. Packing If the transmitter is sent without its original packing, the unit must be sufficiently protected against shocks with air cushion film, foamed plastic or corrugated board. The thickness of the protection must be adapted to the type of packing, the mode of transport and the weight of the transmitter. Stickers Caution-Fragile and Caution-Sensitive Electronic Equipment should be put on the outside of the box. If the transmitter may be subjected during transport to high air humidity or even sea water, it must be shrink-wrapped in an air-tight film, inside of which a suitable desiccant should be placed. The quantity of the desiccant to be put inside the packing volume must correspond to the expected transport duration (at least 3 months). Validity: 07/02 Technical improvements reserved.
