Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs Songdo Convensia, Incheon, Republic of Korea 29 November 1 December 2017 Ing. Dr. Eugene Atiemo CSIR-Ghana Building and Road Research Institute Kumasi, Ghana

Introduction A sustainable city is designed with the consideration of environmental impacts. Sustainable cities work towards an environmentally, socially and economically healthy and resilient habitat for existing populations without sacrificing the ability of future generation to experience the same. 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 2

Introduction Resilient cities have the capacity to survive, adapt and grow irrespective of physical, social and economic challenges and acute shocks it experiences. Inclusive, safe, sustainable and resilient cities meet challenges through integrated solutions rather than through fragmented approaches that meet one of the goals at the expenses of the other 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 3

Main Challenges For Developing, Adopting, Disseminating Or Scaling These STI Solutions For developing countries like Ghana the main challenges are numerous and include: Unenforced planning and building regulations Poor urban spatial planning Unregulated land tenure systems leading to massive destruction of forest cover and vegetation massive peripheral development of housing and estates in the major cities at variance with planned schemes. 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 4

Main Challenges For Developing, Adopting, Disseminating Or Scaling These STI Solutions Individuals building at far distances, therefore transporting long distances to get to their destinations due to this there is an excessive release of carbon monoxide from vehicles into the atmosphere. Corrupt practices leading to multiple ownership which creates conflicts, crisis and destruction. Government Agencies employ qualified staff but lack basic tools like GPS, vehicles etc to perform effectively. 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 5

The Knowledge/Implementation Gaps Requiring More Research And Technology Development Promulgation of a comprehensive, workable National STI Policy which will, among others: Ensure sustainable development where resources are used to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations according to SDG 11. 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 6

The Knowledge/Implementation Gaps Requiring More Research And Technology Development Provision of financial and logistical guidance for innovative schemes to provide efficient utility, transportation and other important social services Empowering State Institutions to ensure compliance with laws and regulations State intervention and facilitation on the provision of housing schemes for the urban poor, low-income group and rural people. 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 7

Expected concrete outcomes and recommendations that should result from the Forum in relation of STI for the selected SDGs Nations must provide the right environment to ensure compliance Find effective tools to address challenges confronting nations and cities Provide adequate funds for research to make cities inclusive, sustainable and resilient Effective implementation of all recomenadations to achieve SDG Goal 11 11/29/2017 Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs 8
