There are many wonderful holidays, here is a brief summary of : Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah! Christmas: Christmas is one of the most important holidays in the English speaking world. There are many Christmas traditions in these countries. The traditions are both religious and secular in nature. The word Christmas is taken from 'Christ's Mass' or, in the original Latin, Cristes maesse. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on this day. However, in modern times traditional Christmas festivities have become much less related to the Christ story. Examples of these other traditions include: Santa Claus, Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer and others. Kwanzaa: Kwanzaa means first fruits. It's an African American celebration observed from December 26th through January 1st. It was developed by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 as a way to celebrate and promote the African American culture. Kwanzaa focuses on seven principles namely unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
Candles in a Kinara are lit for each day of the celebration. A black candle is lit on the first day; it symbolizes the people. To the left of the black candle are three red candles representing their struggles. To the right of the black candles are three green candles which represents hope and the future. The candles are lit from left to right for each day of the celebration. Greetings in Swahili are also exchanged each day of the celebration. Hanukkah: Definition: Hanukkah is a Jewish celebration commemorating the military victory of the Jewish Maccabees over the Greek-Syrians. Hanukkah also commemorates the re-dedication of the Second Temple in 164 BCE. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days. A Menorah, or a candelabrum is lit one at a time for eight nights. On the last day of Hanukkah all the candles are therefore lit. While the candles are being lit chants are sung and blessings are recited. Afterward, families can sit down to a prepared meal, play games or exchange gifts.
