It seems that every moment of her life is planned out for her by her mother and cousin and she is constantly compared to her beautiful and congenial cousin Olive. On her 29th birthday, Valancy is depressed by her sad life in the house on the hill and ends the day the way she started it; by crying. The next day, she decides to have the pains around her heart checked by a doctor (one that her family would disapprove of). Flustered by the fact his son has been in an accident, Dr. Trent leaves without telling Valancy what her condition is. Yet in a matter of days, Valancy receives a letter in which Dr. Trent plainly tells her she has angina and a limited time to live. Valancy is shocked by the news, sad that such a pathetic life will end before anything worthwhile takes place. Yet she might find a way to remedy that... This book was so good. It's the second adult novel that I've read by L.M. Montgomery and I have to admit I enjoyed it more than A Tangled Web. The characters all seem so real and one can't help but become absorbed in the book. Thank you, Amber, for suggesting it! :-) Valacny is a wonderful protagonist. In the beginning she's so pitiful and miserable and you just feel so sorry for her, but as the book moves along, Valancy learns to stick up for herself and really becomes her own person. I have to admit I wasn't so sure about Barney Snaith in the beginning, but he turned out to be perfect for Valancy. I won't give away any spoilers, but I will say the ending of this book totally surprised me; I did not see it coming (and I was surprised in a good way!). By Rachel Ford I can't believe the marginal price I paid for this book on Kindle. This was the most delightful little story from one of the most talented authors. It's hard to put into words exactly why this book sang to me like it did, but I must say that I feel changed for having read it. Part of me was so disappointed when the story ended, but anyone who has read it knows that to add to this story, or change it in anyway would be to destroy it's perfection. While in essence it is a fairly simple pot-line, the character development was so beautiful it moved me to tears and the setting itself is so vivid, intense and changing it was like a character in it's own right. This book
is a romamce, yes, but it's also a poignant exploration of the soul. So for the hopelessly romantic at heart, for people who fell in love with Anne and Prince Edward Island, or for people who want to delve into questions of life, living and love, this book is undoubtedly for you. By Emily The first time I read The Blue Castle was about 5 years ago on a road trip with 2 teen-aged daughters and we ended up reading it out loud. We don't typically do that, but we only had 1 copy and we were all caught up in it and it was the only way we could all read it at the same time! We laughed from the beginning at the excessive dreariness and at the descriptions of the relatives and then cheered for Valency as she found herself. I have always loved reading, but there are only a handful of books that I have read more than once. I have lost count how many times I have read "The Blue Castle" since then. I know it well and now there is always a copy at my bedside so I can pick it up and just start reading anywhere when I need a little Valency! I make sure I have more than one copy so that if one of my girls takes one, or if I decide to loan it out, I still have one for me. We highly recommend this book! See all 559 customer reviews...
