Tishomingo County 4-H May newsletter April 26, 2018 State 4-H Congress & Project Achievement Day Participants If you plan to attend State 4-H Congress or Project Achievement Day, please let us know which day you can come to complete your county contest(s). This needs to be done before May 9. We will be sending out registration packets to the State 4-H Congress participants soon. Please come by the Extension Office by May 9 so we can get you registered. We will send out Project Achievement Day registration information a little later. The deadline for PAD registration is May 24. Upcoming Events The next cooking class will be on Tuesday, May 8 at 4 PM at the Extension Office. We will have a craft workshop on Wednesday, May 9 at 4 PM at the Extension Office. We will not have a sewing class or any robotics meetings in May. Please be sure to read your newsletters and respond to things you wish to participate in by the appropriate date. Poster Contest Information There are two different poster contests that you can participate in that are coming up. These contests are open to all junior and senior members ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2018. Mississippi Poster Art Contest: The theme for this poster contest is 4-H: Our Hearts Beat Green. You also have the option of creating your own theme. A member may submit only one poster in this contest. The poster must be on a.016 ply construction poster board (solid fiber board) that is 14 x 22 inches in dimension (half the standard size sheet of poster board). Posters may be any medium (ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, oil or collage) but cannot be 3-dimensional. Posters incorporating copyrighted material (such as cartoon characters) will not be accepted. Open theme participants are urged to avoid Join 4-H themes or theme ideas that have been used nationally in the past. The three most outstanding posters in the state will receive cash awards: Sr. 1st place-$25; 2nd place-$15; 3rd place-$10; Jr. 1st place $15; 2nd place-$10; 3rd place-$5. Dairy Poster Art Contest: The 2018 Dairy Poster Art Contest theme is How Do You Your Dairy?. The poster must be 22 x 28 inches and can be on poster board or a substitute. Do not use brand names or copyrighted material. Posters will be judged by the following factors: attracts attention, original or well-adapted, follows theme, conveys message, accurate information, and general appearance. Awards are given at the state level with 1st place receiving $100, 2nd place receiving $75, and 3rd place receiving $50. These posters must be turned in to our office by Friday, May 25 by 5:00 PM. MHV Dairy Foods Contest The 2018 MHV June Dairy Foods contest will be held June 5 at 6:00 PM at the Midway School Building. This is a contest sponsored by the Tishomingo County Homemakers. Anyone who is 4- H age may participate. If you would like to participate, please prepare a dish containing at least 1 cup of dairy product. We will eat after the dishes have been judged. You will need to have your dish at the Midway School Building NO LATER than 5:30 p.m. in order for it to be judged. You are also welcome to bring prepared dishes that will not be judged for the meal. We will be awarding monetary prizes to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners this year. I know we have some 4-H members with impressive cooking skills, so please participate this year and show off your skills! Record Books If you are interested in completing a record book and need forms please contact our office and we will be glad to get them to you. All record books (Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Volunteer) are due in our office by June 15 at 5:00 PM. Senior 4-H Resumes Another phase of the record keeping program is the 4-H Resume. This opportunity is available only for senior 4-H members ages 15-18. Members submitting resumes must have actively been enrolled in 4-H during the current year. There is an application that has to be filled out that will be judged at the state level. There is also an interview if your resume is selected. A 4-H member can submit a record book and a resume in the same year either in the same project category or in two different project categories. Photography Contests Horticulture Photography Contest This is a contest for digital and film pictures of horticulture (plants). The rules for this contest can be found at http://msucares.com/counties/amite_3/horticulture_photography_rules.pdf. Each entry must be mounted and accompanied by a completed NJHA entry form. These entries are due in the Extension Office by June 15 at 5:00 PM. Photography Exhibit Contest This contest includes digital and traditional photography exhibits and is open to all members ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2018. The 4-H member must photograph all entries submitted, but does not have to be enrolled in the photography project. There are three divisions: traditional film (35mm), digital, or creative digital. Junior and senior entries will be judged separately. The best five entries overall in each category will be declared the winning junior entries. A county may submit a total of 18 entries, but only three entries per category (nine junior and nine senior entries.) Duplications or photos that are VERY SIMILAR such as a color and/or black/white photo as the same image are discouraged and may be disqualified. TRADITIONAL (FILM) Print (black and white and/or color) must be from a 35mm negative, not a disk or slide). For each entry, you must submit one 8 x10 (photographic) print in a clear 8 x10 or 8.5 x11 page protector. Enclose the whole strip of uncut negatives (usually 4-6) in an unsealed letter-size envelope. On the outside of the envelope containing the negative, please indicate the frame number of the negative to use for enlargement. DIGITAL This category can include black and white and/or color print with very minor adjustments, and have only had VERY MINOR tone, color and contrast adjustments. CREATIVE DIGITAL This category can include black and white and/or color prints that have been greatly manipulated or digitally altered/enhanced. Photos must have been noticeably altered or enhanced no minor adjustments here! You must also submit the original photo along with the one print of the creatively enhanced photo. Note: If a photocomposition or collage is created, (one photo edited together with pieces of several other photos), the 4-H member submitting the entry must have taken all photographs used in the composition. The original photos used for the composition can be either film or digitally created. Please be aware that all photos that are published in books and magazines are copyrighted. Illegally scanning and copying of these photos for use in a composition is against the Federal Copyright Law. To ensure adequate reproduction quality, all photos entered in the digital or creative digital category must be taken with at least a 3 megapixel camera. We will label all entries (film, digital, creative digital) at the Extension Office (do not write any information or place a label directly on he back of the prints, as it will ruin the prints). These entries are due in the Extension Office no later than May 25 at 5:00 PM. 4-H Cook-Out Contest The North 4-H Cook-Out Contest will be held on Tuesday, June 26 in Winona, MS at the Montgomery Multipurpose Facility. Registration for the poultry contest will begin at 8:30 AM and registration for the pork and beef contests will be at 9 AM. Please contact our office for more information if you are interested in participating. Pre-registration for each event is due in our office by June 8.
Horse Art Horse Art & Horse Photography Entries: Horse Photography Entries & Equine Art Entries should be turned in to our office by 5:00 p.m. May 18. This is the absolute deadline because the entries must be sent at that time to be judged prior to the district show. Please note that you cannot turn in photography entries or art entries at the district horse show. They must be turned in to the county office by this set deadline. Horse Photography Contest This contest is open to junior and senior members and includes digital and 35mm photos. These photos must be taken by the member submitting it and it must have a horse/equid as the primary focus of the picture. There are four categories: breed promotion, action, nonaction/candid, and human interest. Digital and 35mm photos in each category will be judged together. Members may submit only one entry per category and photos must have been taken since July 1, 2017. The photos may be color or black and white and must be a printed 5 x 7. All digital photos must include both original and altered photos and be mounted on separate poster board. For more specific rules, please contact our office at 423-7016 and we will be glad to get them to you. Horse Art Contest This contest is open to junior and senior members and includes art work done in the following categories: (NOTE: Multiple entries in a single category by an individual 4-H er will subject all entries in that category to disqualification.) 1. Pastels/Charcoal/Graphite/Colored Pencil (Abstract or Realistic) 2. Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor (Abstract or Realistic) 3. Pen/Ink/Markers/Crayon (Abstract or Realistic) 4. Cartoon (Single Frame or Strip) 5. Sculpture/3-D (Abstract or Realistic) 6. Mixed, Altered Media, Other 7. Home Furnishings: Accessories for Your Home Rules for Horse Art Contest 1. Artwork MUST have been completed since July 1 of previous year. 2. Artwork MUST be the work of the 4-H member submitting the entry/entries. 3. Artwork that documents 4-H horse-related activities is most desirable, but other horse-related activities may be submitted, also. Artwork must have a horse as the primary focus of the work. 4. Artwork MUST meet the following criteria: a) Artwork MUST BE protected by simple matting, framing, or protective covering such as plastic wrap. b) Artwork MUST be DRY and COMPLETE when entered. c) Artwork MUST have a COMPLETED entry form attached to the back of the artwork with required signatures. Entry forms are available at your county Extension office. d) Artwork MUST fit the category entered and adhere to the rules, or will be subject to disqualification. 5. There is a junior and a senior division. These entries are due in the Extension Office no later than May 18 by 5:00 p.m.
4-H Winter Classic Horse Show Series The 4-H Winter Classis Horse Show Series is a series of horse shows that are held during the months of January through March. They are held in Tippah, Chickasaw, Lee, Pontotoc, and Union Counties. These shows help prepare 4-H youth for the upcoming 4-H District and State Show that is held in June each year. Kristen Howell, Tishomingo County 4-H member, has participated in the Winter Classic Horse Show Series ever since she began showing horses in 4-H. This year she received the Senior High Point Gated Buckle Award and the Huey Rakestraw Outstanding 4-H Member Award. Congratulations, Kristen, and good luck on the upcoming 4-H District and State Shows! Lowndes County Shooting Sports Invitational Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Lowndes County Shooting Sports Invitational on April 7! Participants included Isaac Howell, Stephen Howell, John Wyatt Daily, and Aidan Wilburn. Great job, everyone! National 4-H Conference Jonah Holland, State 4-H Vice President and State 4-H Ambassador, recently had the opportunity to be a delegate at the National 4-H Conference held in Washington, D.C., April 7-12. Congratulations to Jonah on all his hard work and accomplishments! We know he represented 4-H and Tishomingo County very well during the conference!
