Key facts about Peterboro Matboard
Peterboro Conservation Q: What is Peterboro Conservation? Peterboro Conservation a high alpha cellulose matboard specified to meet the conservation quality standards laid down by The Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG) and FACTS. Q: How does it differ from other conservation matboards? Many matboards claim they provide conservation properties, but not all conservation matboards are manufactured with the same high quality materials. What separates the various products on the market are the quality of their materials (i.e. surface paper, core, glue and backing) and the method by which they are produced. The quality of the components not only effect the degree of long term protection the matboard is able to provide but also is directly responsible for its performance during cutting and handling. PETERBORO Conservation is significantly different in 5 key areas: Core We use high Alpha Cellulose as the main ingredient in our conservation core. Alpha Cellulose may be distilled from cotton or wood pulp. The higher the Alpha Cellulose content the higher the archival purity of the board. While the FATG specification requires that the alpha cellulose content must be no less than 84% Peterboro Conservation core is specified to have more than 90% high Alpha Cellulose. Chemical Ingredients The conservation quality of a matboard can often be affected by the chemical impurities within its materials. For instance the level of iron and copper within the matboard directly creates tarnishing and discolouration of the matboard whilst the Sulphur content can raise acidic levels that attack both matboard and artwork. In the manufacture of Peterboro Conservation we strictly control the level of chemical ingredients to ensure that they meet or exceed the Fine Art Trade Guild & FACTS standards. Surface paper Peterboro Conservation surface papers are 100% virgin fibre. To reduce colour fade and bleed Peterboro Conservation uses pigments for surface paper colouration. Our pigments are specified to meet the fade and bleed test requirements outlined in the Fine Art Trade Guild standards. Testing shows that in many cases Peterboro Conservation exceeded the FACTS requirements by 300%. Adhesive Peterboro Conservation uses a patented starch based water soluble adhesive. This ensures the adhesive will meet conservation standards in any environment. It uses no alcohols, plasticisers, or petro based polymers as did many of the adhesives we tested. Backing Paper Our backing papers are made from 100% virgin fibre, buffered with calcium carbonate at a minimum 3% reserve and contain no optical brighteners. The finish must be smooth and even, with no variation in colour. Summary : Quality Independent quality control benchmarking shows that Peterboro Conservation has one of the highest standards of consistent quality in the market. We boast one of the lowest rates of returns for visual defects in the industry. Q: Can you verify these claims? Yes, our matboards are tested and benchmarked on a constant basis. With our extensive onsite laboratory, daily production is continually evaluated against preset standards. We also have our matboards tested by independent laboratories using The Fine Art Trade Guild standards as a benchmark.
