ASLI Newsletter August/September 2011 2011, Issue 2 ASLI Meeting Join Us in New Orleans! The theme of the 2012 ASLI Conference is, The Changing Nature of Science Librarianship. This corresponds with the 2012 AMS Annual Meeting theme of, Technology in Research and Operations How We Got Here and Where We re Going. Over the last three decades, advances in technology have wrought groundbreaking changes across nearly every imaginable field and The 15th Conference of the Atmospheric Science Librarians International (ASLI) in New Orleans, Louisiana January 25-26, 2012 Welcome! Welcome to the second issue in 2011 of ASLI News! In this issue, there is more information on the upcoming 2012 ASLI Conference, Student Workshop, and ASLI Choice, an invitation to the IAMSLIC meeting at yet another exotic location! Also there is a list of new and upcoming atmospheric science titles. Enjoy! discipline. From media to medicine, engineering to the humanities, technology has changed the way we communicate, explore, research, and learn. The field of science librarianship has not been immune to these changes, and has itself transformed over the past several years into a field burgeoning with new dynamism, opportunity, and, yes, uncertainty. On January 25 26, 2012, the Atmospheric Sciences Librarians International (ASLI) will meet to explore these changes during their Annual Meeting, to be held in the historic city of New Orleans, Louisiana. We invite proposals for papers describing the ways in which librarians and information professionals working in the atmospheric and geosciences are working in new ways to support the information and research needs of their communities; how we ve seen our roles change in the wake of recent technological developments; and what we imagine to be the new frontiers of our profession. We also welcome proposals for panels and themed sessions.

The revised deadline for abstracts is 1 October 2011. Submissions should include full contact information, a title, and brief abstract of less than 250 words. The now-annual Technology Tools and Tips session will be repeated, allowing anyone who is using a technology old or new to participate in this lightning round session, consisting of back-to-back 5-minute talks. Proposals from students in the atmospheric, library, or information sciences are particularly welcomed. As with last year, we will also be co-sponsoring a data stewardship session with the 28th Conference on Interactive Information Processing Systems, a Student Workshop, and a field trip. Watch the ASLI Listserv for details! Kari Kozak (U. Iowa Libraries) ASLI Officers At the ASLI meeting in Seattle, WA, Jamaica Jones of NCAR was selected as the ASLI Chair-Elect. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Jamaica could not fulfill her role. Conference planning for the 2012 ASLI is being managed by the conference planning committee, consisting of the ASLI officers and other volunteers: Chair: Kari Kozak (U. Iowa Libraries) Past-Chair: Gene Major (NASA/GSFC Library) Treasurer: Gloria Aversano (NOAA Miami Regional Library) Secretary: Stephanie Wright (U. Washington Libraries) ASLI Choice: Maria Latyszewskyj (Environment Canada) ASLI Membership: Judie Triplehorn (Geophysical Institute Library, U. Alaska) AMS Liaison: Jinny Nathans (AMS) Conference Planning Committee Member: Jennifer Harbster (Library of Congress) IAMSLIC 2011 37th IAMSLIC Conference and the 5th AFRIAMSLIC Conference I would like to invite all of my ASLI colleagues to join us in a fun conference adventure in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Please see the IAMSLIC (International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers) conference website for more information: http://www.iamslic.org/conf2011/ ASLI members get the IAMSLIC member registration rate! Amy Butros (abutros@ucsd.edu).
