Sci-Fi Career Day This booklet is designed to help you select Career Day sessions. Teachers and parents should register their students in advance if possible. Please note the age groups identified for each session is simply a guide. If you feel the session is a good fit for your child/student is, they are welcome to join the session. Sessions Our goal is to provide students with an opportunity to explore next-generation careers. Students will learn about traditional and non-traditional college majors and careers. Electrical Engineering Presenter: Freddie Wong Location: Astronaut Gallery Mr. Freddie Wong has worked as an electrical engineer in the petrochemical industry for many years. In this session, you will learn what it takes to become an engineer. Have you have wondered what s required to get your electronic devices delivered to you safely? Engineers are part of every phase of that process--product design, manufacturing and packaging. With the advent of drones, manufacturing engineers will explore new and creative concepts in the future. How soon will drones be able to deliver your Amazon order? App Design Presenter: Louis Harboe Location: Astronaut Gallery Louis designs icons and interfaces. He creates custom, high quality icons and graphics for Mac, iphone, and web applications. He s currently working on a number of unique, useful iphone applications with a small team of developers at Iced Cocoa. Did we mention, Louis is a still a student? Louis Harboe is a 17 year old who began developing on ios in the seventh grade and has collaborated on apps such as The Mathmaster and ichalkboard, both featured in Chicago Sun-Times and Cult of Mac. He s also the recipient of Apple s Student Scholarship app. Learn more about the future of app design. Coding Presenter: Charryse Johnson Location: Silver Moon Ms. Johnson is the President & Technology Principal at RSI Systems, LLC. Join the session and learn what it takes for a career in coding. Participants will be provided laptops for a hands-on experience.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Presenter: Pat Villafranca Audience: All ages Location: AG Special Agent Patricia Villafranca is the Congressional Affairs and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Houston Division of the FBI. She entered on duty with the FBI in New York City in 1987 and worked espionage matters there for two years. She was then transferred to where she was the Senior Team Leader of the Boston Evidence Response Team, the first team in the entire FBI. In 1997, Agent Villafranca transferred to Houston where she has assisted in the investigations of such high profile cases as Baby Grace and Beloved Doe, and has also continued to assist in overseas matters such as the bombings of the Israeli Embassy and the Argentine/Israeli Social Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the assassination of Presidential Candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio in Mexico. Special Agent Villafranca s most fun moment with the FBI happened when she got to appear in the Academy Award winning film The Silence of the Lambs during her time in new agents training class in Quantico, Virginia. Wearable Technology Presenter: Cory Simon Location: Astronaut Gallery Cory Simon is an engineer at NASA-Johnson Space Center. He will share information about his current projects. Participants will explore futuristic clothing and material design. This session will take an in-depth look at the technical components of electrical engineering. As NASA plans for human exploration to Mars in 2030, participants will get a glimpse of smart clothing. Whether designing for skiers who need special pockets to house their ipod or astronauts traveling the galaxy, there is certainly an evergrowing demand for wearable technology in space and everyday fashion. Photography Presenters: Robert Markowitz & Bill Stafford Audience: All Ages Location: Blast-Off Theater Since the dawn of the Space Age, NASA has produced some of the most iconic photographs in history. NASA s astronauts have a unique perspective to capture photographs of unparalleled value. Each NASA center staffs professional photographers who create unique perspectives that contribute to record NASA s history. Johnson Space Center s team of photographers rely on talented eyes behind the lens, as well as on a creative team that process each image the public sees online and in print. Hear the stories behind capturing the perfect shot, and learn how NASA scientists combine their love of STEM with art and photography.

Film/Media Presenter: Bill Hughes, Matt Lavine, & Lauren Galley Audience: All Ages Location: Northrop Grumman Theater Star Wars artist and Houston film-maker Bill Hughes, along with actors Matt Lavine and Lauren Galley, will present a short film and excerpts from their current Houston film project Matt Mercury. The short film details what it takes to make a local Sci-Fi film rise to the level of a major Hollywood production. The film will focus on the ART OF SCI-FI and will show how Science Fiction film making relies on imaginative visuals to create new worlds and take audiences where they have never been before. The Mercury team will also be unveiling the actual filming model of their hero starship, The Electra. They will also have several props on hand and a surprise appearance by one of the film's characters. Robotics Workshops & Competition Presenter: Monique Micheaux Audience: All Ages Times: 2:00-5pm Think robotics is only for those who are good at science and math? Not so! It takes interest and commitment. You will learn how to design, build and test robots in one afternoon. If you are already a robotics enthusiast, Students will engage in the NXT challenge, Body Forward.
