!!! Time & Day!!! October 16 th Meeting 9:30 am The October meeting is on the 16 th at 9:30 am. The meeting is at the old Hartville Kitchen at the corner of SR 619 and Market Street. President s Corner I would like to encourage all the members bring in as many Christmas Tree ornaments as possible because our time is coming to a close and the tree will have to be made ready shortly. It should really look great with all of our contributions. Thanks Fred October Meeting Howard Lorson will be demonstrating to make a toy spinning top that is launched from a turned handle. I was there the last time he did this

demo and it was very well done. Of course I have to say that since I did the demo. Anyway, these make great toys for little kids and Christmas is coming. September Meeting. Sept. 18, 2004 The regular meeting of BWT was called to order by Pres. Fred Totts. He thanked all the members for coming to the meeting. There was one visitor recognized as Paul Welch. He previously was a member a couple of years ago and now has returned to the club. A total of 28 members were present. Pres. Totts thanked George Raeder for the great ice cream social that was held at his house in North Akron. He was commended for having a great facility and friendly hospitality in hosting the joint venture with North Coast Woodturners. A great time was had by all who attended. A letter from Dick Sing was read to the membership by the president. It informed the club membership that Dick would be willing to meet with our club to put on a demonstration of woodturning. He charges $400 per day plus expenses. Many of the club members were interested in having him demonstrate his abilities. Pres. Totts stated that Mr. Sing has open dates from Feb. to May. The president stated that he would look to get him to arrive sometime in the early part of 2005. Mr. Sing is known for turning small items such as pens, ornaments, eggs and bottle stoppers. Mr. Sing is know nationally for his outstanding turnings. We received information from John Hill, chairman of the AAW membership and chapters committee, informing us that the Texas Turners Symposium will be held in early Oct. If anyone is interested in attending, they are to see the president after the meeting for further information. Craft Supplies has sent us two credit vouchers for $15 apiece to be used in future Craft Supplies purchases. Currently, there is a free offer of your personal name being embroidered on any turning smock purchases from them. They also have a special for all members that runs through Nov. 15, in that the purchaser of $100 or more of Craft Supply merchandise will recieve a $15 credit voucher for their next purchase. We are appreciative of Craft Supplies for making these offers available to our members. The Heritage Festival of Randolph Ohio will be coming up this fall and they are making two booths available to our members for free if anyone is interested in showing or displaying the art of woodturning. The president asked if anyone was interested in supplying the booths for that event and there was no interest from club members so the matter was dropped. Mr. Totts suggested that since our club is now a non-profit organization, any contributions made to our organization will be tax deductible. He also suggested that we should have levels of contributors where they are recognized for their efforts. The levels suggested were as follows: $50, Contributor...$100, Supporter...$500, Sponsor...$1000, Patron. Howard Lorson indicated that we should have some kind of club certificate that can be awarded to the individual or company that could be framed for presentation to the proper individual or company officials. Members seemed to agree with this suggestion. In the search for a hollow vessel turner, the club was informed that Doug Barnes was not interested in demonstrating to the club.

George Raeder indicated that Jim Pugh from Northcoast Woodturners did a demonstration for them and did an excellent job. At that demonstration, he did not do any turning, but just explained the technical aspects of the procedure. Since most of the turning is done inside the vessel, it would be difficult to visually observe from members seats. Pres. Totts stated that he would look into the matter. Dan Greaser stated to the club that he had applied for an Educational Grant from the AAW and was granted $600 for the Hondouras Project. He stated that the money would go for his trip to Hondouras and supplies for the teaching assignment. He expects this to take place in Feb. or March. The two lathes that the club purchased have been secured by him and they will be shipped to Hondouras next month. He is making available a collection vessel so that any money donated by members could be used for the purchase of lathe chucks to hold the wood. Again, he thanked the membership for their contributions in the past. Don Karr indicated that due to an illness to his wife, he will not be able to make all the meetings in the coming months. He asked if there was anyone available to cover his duties in his absence. This duty would be relocating the books from their storage at Hart Design building to the present location of the old Hartville Kitchen, plus the check in and check out of books by members. Marty Chapman indicated that he would be happy to accept that responsibility. Don Karr also indicated that there have been numerous donations to the club library lately. One donation consisted of 3 years worth of Router Magazines. Another donation consisted of 2 years of Popular Woodworking. There were other notebooks on woodworking and woodturning that were submitted to the club. We thank those individuals for making those contributions available to the membership. Don Karr also noted that the donations of wood from Mike Novak of Woodworkers Supply of Bedford may not be forthcoming in the near future. In his conversations with Mike, Don stated that there have been very few sales to BWT members and it would be hard for him to justify donating those large supplies of wood. We should make an attempt to get to the store and buy our woodworking supplies in the future. He also mentioned that on Sept 25, there will be a Sorby demonstration at the store, hosted by Mike Novak and put on by a representative of Sorby of England. All Sorby products will be on sale with a 33% discount. So if we need anything, we should be available for this big turning event. Shirts with the club logo will be available for sale. Those who have ordered them in the past can now pick them up. See Lou Mineweaser, the Treasurer if you are interested in ordering one for pickup at the next meeting. Lou Mineweaser stated that we had $6361 in the club treasury. The Christmas tree project has approximately 150 ornaments at the present time. We need around 250 to 300 ornaments to fill the tree. We will be turning ornaments at the conclusion of the meeting but if we cannot get enough to meet our goal, members are urged turn these ornaments on their own and bring them to the next meeting. This project was put on hold from last year due to the lack of sufficient ornaments. It is imperative that we work hard to complete it for the coming holiday season. If each member could do about 5 or 6 ornaments we would be able to meet our goal and help the children of Akron Children s Hospital. The meeting was adjourned so that the lathes could be set up and the turning of ornaments could begin. Respectfully submitted
