Candidate 6 Q Candidate response Mark Commentary (a) The two artworks that I have studied are Still life with Chair Caning by Pablo Picasso and Van Gogh s Chair by Vincent Van Gogh. Both have the subject matter of a chair. Still life with chair caning has the subject matter of a chair. The chair is abstract and chaotic and if it wasn t for the title or the literal caning from a chair it would be difficult to tell. The main focal point of the artwork appears to be the letters JOU which stand out the most. Picasso uses various images within the piece such as a wine glass, a citrus fruit and a pipe, all of which are distorted and rearranged. In this piece Picasso uses various tones. He uses a variation of greys to produce prominent highlights and shadows. His craftful use of tone creates an interesting form however the idea of the 3D image is distorted when he adds the flat text on top. To create this piece Picasso used oil paints and collage. The paint was harshly yet craftfully put onto the canvas giving thick brushstrokes which further contributed to the chaotic appeal. He also used what appears to be an old café chair which he combines into the piece creating his vision of a glass topped café table, possibly inspired by one of his many trips to French cafes. Van Goghs subject matter is also a chair however it is nothing like Picasso s. Where Picasso was inspired by cubism Van Gogh was inspired by Post-Impressinism. This meant that Van Gogh s chair appears more realistic. Knowledge and understanding of subject matter and its treatment by the artist is demonstrated. The comment on focal point being the letters JOU is not fully explained. However, when considered together with the comment describing the subject matter and its distortion, there is enough understanding to gain a mark. The candidate describes Picasso s use of tone through the highlights and shadow creating form. They then go on to develop this through a comment on the effect of the flat text. Considered together, these points gain a mark. The choice of media and its application and effect is explained, showing a knowledge and understanding of Picasso s technique. Knowledge and understanding of Picasso s use of unconventional collage materials (and its possible inspiration) is demonstrated in relation to this specific work. A comment is made on the inspiration of art movements, but it is not fully explained why being inspired by Post- Impressionism would make it more realistic. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk of 6

Within his painting, beside the main focal point which is the chair, we see a pipe and a handkerchief. It is because of these two images that we get the impression that the chair is not only a chair but also a self-portrait of Van Gogh himself. Van Gogh also used many tones. His colours were bold and showed many contrasts like the green leg against the red tiles. The candidate explains their interpretation of the symbolism of the objects in this work, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Colour can be used to convey a tonal effect however, the candidate has not explained how this was achieved in this work. An understanding of tone in relation to shading and highlights is demonstrated. Knowledge and understanding of Van Gogh s oil painting technique, specifically the effect of his brushwork, is demonstrated in relation to the selected work. His shading and highlights really gave a 3D effect and would have been realistic if he hadn t of used different perspective. Like Picasso Van Gogh also worked with oil paints and for his chair he used these on canvas. Van Goghs painting had quite messy lines, perhaps giving a further insight to his mental health at the time. He doesn t have clean lines and he makes his brush strokes prominent. In my opinion Picassos Still life with Chair Caning has the The candidate demonstrates an understanding of visual most visual impact as the chaos and triangular arrangement impact created by the chaos and triangular composition, and cause you to focus more on the deeper meaning of the explains the effect this creates. painting and the abstract style leaves a lot of room for interputation. This point on abstract style has not been related clearly enough to visual impact. Total 9/ (b) Cubism The style in which he was inspired by and it s the style that he painted this piece in. His Father Picasso s dad inspired every piece he created as he was the one that pushed Picasso to follow through with his art career. George Braque Picasso was influenced by Braque as he started the cubist movement that Picasso loved. A vague, undeveloped point on cubism is not explained clearly enough in relation to Picasso s work and practice. The influence of Picasso s father is not fully explained in relation to Picasso s work and practice. It is also not factually correct that Picasso s father inspired every piece he created. The impact of Braque and Cubism on Picasso s work and practice is not explained. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 2 of 6

Paul Cezane Paul Cezane was an illusionist artists and inspired Picasso to play with space ad change the way he looked at objects. French culture Picasso loved to go to France and this piece is thought to of been inspired by a French table in a café Picasso loved to visit. Total /5 While the candidate demonstrates some understanding of Cezanne s impact, there is a misconception ( illusionist artist) and his influence on Picasso s work is not clearly explained. Though a bit thin, this point does relate the influence of French culture and the café scene to a specific work by Picasso. 3. This painting has a rather distorted composition. The scale is unusual and the perspective are far from realistic. It is very chaotic. The colours are a mix of dull primary and secondary colours. There appears to be a lot of contrast such as the red animal against the green grass or the yellow of the houses with blue rooftops ect. The mood seems to be quite depressing ad the dark blues and greens and other cold colours very sad, possibly anxious. Personally I think the style of the painting is very intriguing. The various perspectives spark a lot of intrest and the colour pallet the artists has used makes you consider the artists feelings or state of mind at the time of this painting. Total 4/ Knowledge and understanding relating to the distorted composition is demonstrated through explanation of the unusual scale and perspective creating a chaotic effect. The candidate demonstrates an understanding of the effect of contrasting colours in relation to this specific work. Interpretation of mood and atmosphere is justified in relation to the cold colours creating a sad and possibly anxious mood. A further justified point is made giving personal opinion on the style of the painting. An explanation is given of how colour and perspective contribute to the intriguing style identified. 7(a). The two designs that I have studied are Bring in Da noise Bring in Da Funk by Paula Scher and La Samaritaine by Alphonse Mucha both of which are posters for a theatre. Paula Scher s design was produced to advertise the various upcoming plays at the public theatre. It is bright and eyecatching to attract the attention of theatre lovers. The candidate has clearly studied the design work (also included in the question paper as the image for Q8) as their response demonstrates prior knowledge. The function of the design to advertise plays is identified, and an explanation is given on how it does this. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 3 of 6

The style she was influenced by in this piece was Russian constructivism She used sharp lines going in various directions and a moderately limited colour pallet. She was a graphic designer and used IT and printing techniques in her piece. She put the words The Public in white as a technique in order to make the small text stand out. Mucha also created a poster. His poster was advertising the play La Samaritaine. It was produced to give information to religious or just theatre lovers information about the religious play being performed. The style of this poster was art nouveau meaning that Mucha used very flowing organic shapes. There was no harsh or rigid aspects to this poster. Much also printed but not in the same way as Scher as at the time of this poster technology was not advanced enough. He used aspects from nature to create a very organic look. I believe that Paula Scher s Bring in Da noise Bring in Da Funk is the most effective as the bright, bold colours catches the viewers attention instantly and the content is clear and easily visible to read the different directions of the text and the dancer as the focal points draws immediate attention. Total 6/ Knowledge and understanding of constructivist style and how it has been achieved is demonstrated in relation to this design. The first comment on IT and printing is vague and not fully developed in relation to the design. This comment on the colour of the text is not fully explained as a graphic technique. The function of the poster to advertise a particular play is fully explained. Knowledge and understanding of the Art Nouveau style is demonstrated and explained in relation to the Mucha poster. This point on Mucha s printing technique and the advancement of technology is vague and not fully explained. This point is also vague and is not explained clearly in relation to the poster. The candidate makes a justified point as to why they think Paula Scher s poster is most effective, referring to the use of colour creating visual impact. The first observation about the content being clear and easily visible is not fully explained. However, when considered with the explanation of how direction of text and the focal point create visual impact, a mark is awarded. 7(b) Paula Scher s influences Russian Constructivism This was the style she based this piece on. The limited colour pallet and direction of the lines are all influences by this. A succinct point is made on the influence of Russian Constructivism and knowledge and understanding of its impact is demonstrated through explanation of use of colour and line in Scher s design. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 4 of 6

Helvetica Scher hated the font Helvetica ad inspired to change things up and make her designs different. The economic crash This drew her to text as it was cheaper to print text than images. Punk movement This is where the look of distortment came from IT Scher was influenced by IT as it allowed her to design in many layers. Wood type posters The arrangement of the text was also influenced by this. Total /5 9 The beats headphones are very successful in functioning as they are mainly made from plastic they are lightweight and are not to heavy to put on your head. The are padded with leather around the ears to provide comfort whilst listening to music and they are able to change size to an extent so that many different people can wear them. These headphones are very modern and the range of colours is very fashionable, appealing to many people. This product is targeted at a younger generation such as teenagers. The primary colours used give us an indication that it could be for younger users This point on font type is not fully explained in relation to the designer s work and practice (e.g. in what way she changed things up or made her design different ). The comment is misconstrued and the influence of the economic crash is not fully explained in terms of the impact on Scher s work and practice. This point on the punk movement is vague and not explained in relation to Scher s work and practice. The point on IT, presumably relating to use of graphic design software, is vague and not fully explained in relation to Scher s work and practice. The candidate may be referring to woodblock prints however, this point is vague and not explained in relation to the designer s work and practice. Fitness for purpose is clearly explained with reference to the product being lightweight, showing knowledge and understanding of this design issue. A further justified point is made relating to fitness for purpose with reference to the leather providing comfort. A justified point is made explaining why the adjustable size makes the product fit for purpose as many different people can wear them. The candidate makes a justified point relating to both style and target market, which are elements of the question. They state that the range of colours would appeal to many people and they go on to explain that primary colours attract younger users. Together these points are awarded a mark. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 5 of 6

but also that it can be targeted it older music lovers as there is black, white and grey designs which have a more sophisticated appeal I believe that although the product proved popular in the past for its wireless feature and modernised look technology has advanced recently and many buyers are looking for smaller more compact items. Total 6/ Overall total marks 27/5 A further justified point is made as to why the colours black, white and grey would attract an older target market. The candidate gives their opinion with a justified reason for the enduring popularity of the product. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 6 of 6
