Prject Name: Quick Summer Medallin Quilt Intrductin: A g with the flw quilt. Yu have full flexibility t make this medallin quilt yur wn. If yu want bigger, g fr it. If yu want a rectangle, take a deep breath and g fr it. Ging ff the reservatin is fine with me, HOWEVER all the new math calculatins are n yu. Materials: Create yur fabric neighbrhd. I had a waterclr lking flral panel that I had fr mre than a few years. It lked really cl hwever nce it was hme what was I thinking? I als, lcated 2 brder prints abut 1 yard each. They have different persnalities s I guess nly ne will be used r perhaps neither. Find a panel r fabric that can be fussy cut t use as yur center. Actually if yu have a large rphan applique r pieced blck that wuld be perfect as well. It will be put n pint s keep that in mind when selecting. Then select abut 5-6 ther fabrics that supprt yur panel r blck. Think change in texture change in scale change in genre edgy clr matches. 16 (finished) panel r rphan blck fr center ½ yard, center framing triangles ¼ yard, skinny frame brder 1 ⅔ yard, inside setting triangles 1¼ yard, utside setting triangles & brder 3 1 yard fr brder and binding Directins: Step 1: Center Using a panel fussy cut (1) 16½ square. If yur panel r rphan blck is smaller than 16½, add a brder t get it t size. This brder can be pieced r un-pieced. If yur panel is ver 16½ decide hw t size it dwn r chse t use it as is. Realize yu will need t adjust all ther calculatins if yu g ff the grid. The center will be n-pint ; it is a critical perspective when selecting yur panel r blck. If yur panel is directinal and will nt lk gd n-pint, yu have several ptins: use anther panel r add (4) crners t yur square; then trim t 16½ r add a pieced brder grwing the panel t 23½ square. Step 2: Center n Pint Cut (2) 12½ squares using center framing fabric. Crsscut the squares n ne diagnal. Yu shuld have (4) triangles. Stitch the triangles t each side f the center. Press seams t the triangle. Medallin is nw 23½ square. Using skinny frame brder 1 cut (4) 1-5/8 strips. Crsscut (2) strips 23½. Then stitch t the sides f yur center medallin. I wuld highly recmmend that yu pin the beginning, middle and end at the least. Press seams t brder 1. Using the remaining brder 2 strips, crsscut (2) strips 25¾. Stitch the strips t the tp and bttm f yur center medallin assembly. Again, pin, pin and pin. Press seams t brder 1. Quick Summer Medallin Quilt - Page 1 f 4
Step 3: Brder Blcks Pull ut a few f yur quilt bks and select a 6 finished pieced blck. T make the math easier, lk fr blcks designed n a 4-Patch r 9-Patch grid. Yu need t make (16) 6 finished blcks. Yu can chse t d a sampler by making 1 blck each f 16 designs. Yu can use as many r as little f fabric frm yur neighbrhd. If a 6 blck desn t suit yu r if yu have sme rphan blcks r small panel blcks feel free t use them instead. Keep in mind the scale f yur center panel. If it is a fine print, yu may want a reasnable amunt f piecing in yur 6 square. Sme ideas, Ohi Star, Split 9-Patch, Hle in the Barn Dr. If it is a large scale print r a bld saturated print, little piecing seems t maintain the scale. Bars r rails, 9- Patch, Friendship Star, Sh-fly, Pinwheel. I used a Pinwheel. My center panel is a bld saturated print AND ne f the tw fabrics I used fr the Pinwheel is a plaid. T make (1) 6½ pinwheel: Using the 2 pinwheel fabrics, cut strip (1) 3½ x 40. Crsscut using the Angle Trim tl, (4) triangles frm each fabric. Pair (1) triangle frm each fabric then stitch n the diagnal t make a Half-Square Triangle (HST). Press seam t the right. Make (4). Pair (2) HST tgether then stitch. Press seam t the right. Repeat with the remaining HST. Stitch the (2) assemblies tgether matching diagnal and perpendicular seams. Press seams in a spiral rtatin. Repeat t make (16) pinwheels. Step 4: Setting Triangles fr brder 2 Lay ut the center n pint and the (16) 6 blcks ging arund. Five 6 blcks will be n each side f the center. I hpe we are all n the same view, see sketch. Select 2 fabrics (inside and utside setting triangles) that will be used fr the Quarter-Square Triangles (QST) t cmplete the brders. Try nt t take frever but this is yur first chance t clr balance the quilt. Dn t even think abut ver matching unless yu want me t make a BOLD cmment abut it n Facebk! Push the sides f yur bx! Think texture, a slightly ff clr fabric, add calm t cnfusin, add energy t serenity. Quick Summer Medallin Quilt - Page 2 f 4
Cut the QST using the Angle Trim Tl. Cut 5 strips frm what yu selected as the inside and utside QST fabric. Open the strip fr a single layer. Lay the lng side f the Angle Trim Tl n the cut edge f the fabric. The tl just abut cmes t the tp edge f the strip. Cut (12) inside QST and (16) utside QST. Next cut the Half-Square Triangles (HST) using the Angle Trim Tl and a 5 strip f inside and utside fabric. Cut 2 at a time with the fabric flded. If yu have strip segments leftver frm cutting the QST, yu can use that. Cut (4) inside and (4) utside HST. If starting frm a 45 edge: Using the Angle Trim Tl, place the diagnal side f the Angle Trim Tl against the 45 angle AND the tp f the tl (the very very shrt side) shuld be even with the tp f the strip. Cut the shrt side (straight against the tl) t make the right-angle. If starting frm a trimmed perpendicular edge: Using the Angle Trim Tl, place the shrt side f the tl against straight edge and the very very shrt side against the tp edge f the strip. Cut the diagnal side f the tl. Gd time t stp and breathe. Lay ut the QST and HST triangles fllwing sketch. Step 5: Pieced Brder 2 Side Brders: Select (1) 6 square and (2) utside QST. Stitch the shrt side f the QST t adjacent sides f the 6 square t frm a BIG triangle. Pin, Pin, Pin. I wuld highly recmmend pinning n a flat surface t prevent stretching. Press seam t the QST. Repeat t make (2). Select (1) 6 square, (1) inside HST and (1) inside QST. Stitch the shrt side f the QST and the lng side f the HST t adjacent sides f the 6 square t frm a BIG triangle with a stumpy end (HST). Pin, Pin, Pin. I wuld highly recmmend pinning n a flat surface t prevent stretching. Press seam t the triangles. Repeat make (2) with the HST n the right and (2) with the HST n the left. Nw lay ut the side brders again. Stitch the inside BIG triangles t adjacent sides f the Big utside triangle. Make (2). They measure 25¾ unfinished. Quick Summer Medallin Quilt - Page 3 f 4

Repeat make (4). Nw lay ut the side brders again. Stitch the inside BIG triangles t adjacent sides f the Big utside triangle. Make (2). Brder Crners: Select (1) 6 square, (1) utside HST and (2) utside QST. Stitch the shrt side f the QST t ppsite sides f the 6 square. Then stitch the lng side f the HST t frm a BIG triangle. Pin, Pin, Pin. I wuld highly recmmend pinning n a flat surface t prevent stretching. Press seam t the QST and HST. Repeat t make (4). Nw add the brder crners t the lay ut. Step 6: Brder 3 Add a 2 brder t the medallin using the uter QST fabric r fabric f chice frm yur neighbrhd. This will help frame the entire medallin AND allw yur pint t flat when putting n the binding. Remember t keep it simple this is a Quick Summer Medallin. The final size f the quilt is ~45 square. Dne. Sit back, relax, and beam. Step 7: Finishing Flurishes Layer backing, batting and quilt tp. Quilt as desired. Try machine quilting using rayn thread t give yur quilt a shimmering spark.
