I recently received one from The ArtPerk Team and I thought this might be of interest to us all. Dave Lortz We are writing to let you know of a free resource that could be valuable to your members, in hopes that you will share the information with them. When searching for jurored gallery shows to enter, photographers are often frustrated by a process that usually includes spending a great deal of time pouring over listings to locate a show with an interesting theme, only to find that more than half of them end with No Photography. A new website - www.artperk.com - solves this problem for photographers. Inside this issue: BOOK REVIEW 2 WEBSITE REVIEW 2 BUY & SELL 2 APRIL MINUTES 3 ABOUT LAPC 5 1

Minutes from April Meeting Linn Area Camera Club Meeting Minutes April 13, 2008 Ann Jorgensen called the meeting to order at 1:30. We had 72 in attendance to hear guest speaker Charlie Starnes Superintendent of the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. There were members from Rockwell Collins Photo Club, Cedar Rapids Camera Club, Dubuque Camera Club and Iowa City Camera Club. David Byrnes is working on a Flower Photo Outing and announced that we will once again be teaching a Kid s Photography Class. Charlie Starnes talked about the following: How the judges are picked. How photos are presented to the judges. One judge has to give you a Yes for your photo to be on display. Do not enter the same subject for all of your photo categories. Lighting Use of correct exposure Sunny 16 Rule Learn how to See light Early Morning and Late evening Use a tripod Composition Learn the rule of thirds Practice the rule of thirds Not to put your subject in the center Horizontal disease Get a vertical grip if you don t have one Should photos be horizontal or vertical? Be creative with cropping Crop with your lens Watch for background distractions Subject should be moving into frame and not out Composition, Composition, Composition Mats Be very careful We judge the photograph and not the mat Your photo should speak for itself Double and triple mats can cause problems at the fair with the heat Oval mats are not for the Iowa State Fair 3

ArtPerk.com (cont.) At www.artperk.com, artists can search for art opportunities, such as Jurored Shows, Online Jurored Shows, Calls For Work, etc, by the type of media allowed. Now photographers can find shows to enter that consider photography appropriate art, rather than wading through disappointing listings and wasting their time. Also, unlike many other sites, it is free to list, free to search, and photographers can receive email reminders of upcoming deadlines for entry. ArtPerk has no subscription fees, we are ALWAYS FREE for artists! www. ikonians.org (cont.) Online shop. Our own PhotoProShop.com carries hard to get equipment and Nikonians merchandise. Workshops. We offer a rich variety of workshops on various themes Check out https://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=nik_user&saz=nik_upgrade_info to view the different memberships and what each one has to offer. I sent them an email asking to use their logos in our newsletter and they also informed me of a program they are going to implement for clubs with discounts from their PhotoProShop for volume sales. Minutes (Cont.) Camera Operation Learn how to operate your camera Can you operate your camera in manually? Read the owners manual, camera manual and flash manual. You should read the manuals annually. Learn or know F-Stops and Aperture Shutter Speeds Camera lens change your lens Shoot with a different lens (wide angle, fisheye) Change your angle of view get off your feet. Color saturation poor color saturation Watch for skin tones Black and White not Black and Blue Submit your photos, it s a composition. Prejudge your work. Do not fall in love with your photos.
