Minutes from April Meeting Linn Area Camera Club Meeting Minutes April 13, 2008 Ann Jorgensen called the meeting to order at 1:30. We had 72 in attendance to hear guest speaker Charlie Starnes Superintendent of the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. There were members from Rockwell Collins Photo Club, Cedar Rapids Camera Club, Dubuque Camera Club and Iowa City Camera Club. David Byrnes is working on a Flower Photo Outing and announced that we will once again be teaching a Kid s Photography Class. Charlie Starnes talked about the following: How the judges are picked. How photos are presented to the judges. One judge has to give you a Yes for your photo to be on display. Do not enter the same subject for all of your photo categories. Lighting Use of correct exposure Sunny 16 Rule Learn how to See light Early Morning and Late evening Use a tripod Composition Learn the rule of thirds Practice the rule of thirds Not to put your subject in the center Horizontal disease Get a vertical grip if you don t have one Should photos be horizontal or vertical? Be creative with cropping Crop with your lens Watch for background distractions Subject should be moving into frame and not out Composition, Composition, Composition Mats Be very careful We judge the photograph and not the mat Your photo should speak for itself Double and triple mats can cause problems at the fair with the heat Oval mats are not for the Iowa State Fair 3

Dues are $15 for renewals and $20 for new memberships. Monthly meetings are normally held at 1:30pm the second Sunday of the month at Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center in Toddville. Club membership is open to photographers of all skill levels. Members participate in a variety of educational programs, field trips and photo shoots. There is an informal monthly theme contest and an annual club contest that drew over 90 entries in its first year. Members range from beginners to professionals and use both digital and traditional photographic technology. LAPC is a great place to meet and learn from other photo enthusiasts.
