The Gordon Children s Academy 7th July 2017 Dates for week beginning 10th July 2017 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Year 6 Trip to Arethusa Monday - Wednesday PE Coaching PE Coaching 2.40pm EYFS Assembly All Welcome Sports Day Well done to all involved in Sports Day. It was great to see our school community celebrating and enjoying the sunshine. We got a lot of compliments from parents who said it was the best sports day we have ever had and it was very well organised. Even Kent Police commended us on their Facebook page. Charlotte, Olympic Gold Medalist and star guest stated, These are the most well behaved children I have ever seen in a school and you should be very proud of them. Mr Yakub, the staff, Victory school staff and the PTFA worked so well together to make the day a success. It highlights our GCA team spirit. Professional photos to follow next week so watch this space! Silver Award We are proud to announce that the school has achieved the Silver School Games Mark award for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2016/17. Our sporting achievements are a credit to the children this year. I am very proud. Well Done! Last night, Oscar, Kamal and Max from Hughes Class found a tiny kitten that had been put into a carrier bag and thrown into the litter bin outside school. The boys did the responsible thing and found an adult to let them know. The kitten was taken to Stanhope Vets and thankfully was given the all clear. It now has a loving, new home. Well done for being mature and having good community spirit. Year 1 Pop Up Reading Week Year 1 loved pop-up reading week! We had the opportunity to meet the illustrator of our class book, Bruce Ingman. He showed us how to draw a bike and use our imaginations to expand our drawings. We solved fairy tale word problems in Maths by reading them thoroughly and practiced finding rhyming words in stories we know. We love reading in year 1!

Year 2 Pop Up Reading Week During Pop Up Reading Week, Year 2 got the opportunity to meet Naomi Howarth who is the author and illustrator of The Crow's Tale. The children had been reading the book in class so they were very excited to meet her! Together they made rainbow crows and acted out the story. Naomi also read her new book, Tug of War, to the children. It hasn't even been published yet! The week before, Arctic Fox had designed a feather for the Rainbow Crow, so the children used them to make a giant crow for Naomi to say thank you. Pop Up Reading Week Year 3 Today we had a visit from Illustrator David Litchfield who illustrated Building Boy. He told us about being an illustrator and how he enjoyed being paid to do something that he loved. We all drew a picture of a very strange character together and named him. We then got to draw our own characters. We all had lots of questions and he was happy to answer them. We had a great time and really enjoyed the visit. After lunch he came to see our drawings and was really impressed.

The Gordon Children s Academy is a Good school Year 4 Pop Up Reading Week During Reading Week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Joseph Coelho, author of Werewolf Club Rules, to our school. Each class had their own personal session with Joseph, which included him teaching us how easy it is to write poetry. We created poems with him based on his poem called M.O.R.E.R.A.P.S and really loved it. We had a question period as well and found out most of his poems were true stories of his childhood. Pop Up Reading Week Year 5 Last week Year 5 were visited by Gareth P Jones, the author of many different books including "The Steampunk Pirates" and the "Pet Defenders" Series. He took the time to answer as many questions as he could and talked about how he drew inspiration from everywhere around him when writing, carrying a notepad and taking notes and drawing whatever comes into his head. We also enjoyed all the songs he shared based on his different books.

The Gordon Children s Academy is a Good school Year 6 Pop Up Reading Week We met the author of our pop up reading week book today! He was very funny and made us laugh. He drew loads of pictures and explained to us where his ideas came from. Many of us thought he would be a fantastic comedian but he loves to write books! He discussed fears and how that was his main focus for many of his stories. Tales about bedtime and spiders were shared - we all laughed hysterically. Year 6 enjoyed the last visit they would have from an author at primary school. It was definitely one to remember!
