SCAND 354: August Strindberg (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0). A selection of the works of August Strindberg in English translation with background material on the life of the author and his times. SCAND 355: The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0). This course takes a lifeand-letters approach to the author and his times, with special emphasis on his tales (in English translation) and their relationship to the theory and practice of the genre. This course will not fulfil the language-otherthan-english requirement of the BA degree. Philosophy SCAND 326: Scandinavian Children s Literature 3 (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0). A study of the narrative and pictorial tradition of Scandinavian children s literature from the 17 th century to the present. The stories and picture books will be discussed in their historical, pedagogical, and social contexts. Taught in English. SCAND 328: Scandinavian Crime Fiction 3 (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0). An examination of contemporary crime fiction novels from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland. Works covered range from the time of the groundbreaking Swedish writers Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö to the present day. Taught in English. SCAND 343: Scandinavia Through Folklore 3 (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0). An exploration of Scandinavian folk literature as an expression of the human experience from pre-industrial to contemporary Scandinavia. Taught in English. PHIL 381 Film and Philosophy 3 (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0) Study of philosophical issues raised by films; distinguishing film from other arts (photography, theatre, video games), whether films depict or represent reality, emotional engagement, the relation of moral and aesthetic values, and approaches to film criticism.
