She first studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then went on to Europe to study the famous artists of the past. Mary Cassatt spent a lot of time in Paris, where she showed her paintings at the Paris Salon. There she met the famous painter Edgar Degas. He invited her to show her paintings with his Impressionist group. The Impressionists used short brush strokes of pure colors to represent the effect of light on objects. By the 1880s Cassatt had her own individual style. She used clearly defined shapes and colors. She became interested in Japanese style prints in 1890 and began to use flat surfaces with designs in her paintings. She often painted scenes from her own personal life in France, such as picnics with friends and mothers playing with or caring for their children. Her most original paintings, The Bath and The Boating Party, were done in the Japanese style. Mary Cassatt finally had her first one-woman show in 1891.
