My Story and Outsourcing Experience James Martell 15 Year Outsourcing Expert So what s my story with respect to outsourcing? Let me take you back to 2004... At the time, I was running an online publishing company up in Vancouver, Canada, and we were hiring local freelancers to do much of our work. We needed writers, editors, and a variety of people to support our business efforts. Around the same time, I was invited to Santa Barbara, California to do a talk at CJ University, and part of the talk covered how we went about hiring local people and local talent to assist us with the development of our business. At the end of that talk, I was approached by a student of one of my books. He simply came up to me and said: I just use Elance. I had spent 20 minutes during the talking about how we ran ads in the local newspaper, developed job descriptions and work orders, interview prospective candidates, and everything we had to do, to hire talent successfully. And this student of mine comes up to me and says: I just use Elance. I had no idea what he was talking about, so I asked: What is Elance? He explained Elance was a website where thousands of talented individuals from all over the world were looking for work. All you had to do was post your project, and people would actually bid on the job you needed done. You could then search through the applicants, and hire the best person to do the work for you! And I thought, That s interesting. I ll check that out. When I got home, I signed up for a free account at Elance (recently rebranded to Upwork) and started posting projects. At that time, I had a small office and a few staff members, mainly writers and researchers. So I started outsourcing projects to others through the Elance system simultaneously and before you knew it, we were not only more productive (because of the interface 6

Elance was providing to us to build our freelance team), but our costs were dramatically less than what we were spending locally upwards of 60-70% less! This was possible because these freelancers are located all over the world, often living in countries where the cost of living is far less. In addition, I didn t have to treat them as staff, meaning: I didn t have to remit payroll I didn t have to do the government remittances There was no worker s compensation There was no need to provide a desk, computer, Internet connection, or even an office (they had their own) There was no need for training or training programs (freelancers are already professionals in their fields) I also found out that we had a near unlimited talent pool to choose from, was able to hire them on demand, and still maintain the high quality of work. It didn t take long only about 45 days before I decided to shut the office down and move everything into the Elance system. And we have never looked back! That was in 2004. Fast-forward to today. It s now 2017. I ve had the opportunity to build a tremendous online business and gain a lot of personal and family freedom, and I ve done it all through outsourcing. I ve outsourced about 1,500+ projects to date, and there s no sign of letting up. Outsourcing has had a profound impact on my business, and if you re looking to trim back, maybe do a little less work, or maybe increase the quality of the work that you re outputting, I think you ll find the job descriptions and work orders in this guidebook will have a have a profound impact on your business too! 7

Why Are Some So Resistant to Outsourcing? Now before we get talking about the importance of research and using the job descriptions and work orders shared within this guidebook, let s talk a little bit about why some are so resistant to outsourcing. Over the years I ve run a number of courses on a variety of topics and, without fail, all of those courses always have an outsourcing component. That s because it doesn t mater what you re doing, you can always improve the quality of work being done by getting freelance professionals involved. So, why the resistance? I found many students of my trainings would say when asked why are you not outsourcing, they would simply say, I don t know what to say. That statement I don t know what to say is why put together Outsourcing Secrets Revealed 25 Proven Job Descriptions and Work Orders You Can Copy!, to share with you exactly what I have been saying to freelancers for years to get the best talent, best results, and at the best prices. And knowing what to say, starts with research. 8

Research Is the Key I sometimes find myself staring at my computer screen wondering what to say when writing a job description. I have learned when this happens that I have skipped an important step the research. I have also learned that if it takes me 5 minutes to write the job description, it would have taken me 15 minutes to do the research. A good rule of thumb is 3 parts research to 1 part writing. Social Media Scenario I ll share a quick scenario to illustrate. Let s say you are looking to have the grapics created for your social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube. This sounds simple enough, but how many graphics? I would say there will be cover art and probably a thumbnail image for each. This means you need a total of 10 graphics, being 2 for each of the five social media accounts. That s a good start, but now what are we going to include on the graphics? It could be your logo, list of your products and services, a head shot of yourself, photos from the company, contact information or any number of things. I think you can see it s time to probably do a little research to determine what these graphics are going to look like, and have on them. I ll use Google to look for some examples to model. I did a Google search for what to put on social media cover art and instantly found an infographic from HubSpot called The Ultimate Cheat Sheet of Social Media Photo & Image Sizes. This is not exactly what I am looking for at this point, but I ll make note of it because I ll need to list the dimensions for each of the graphics when I put together the companion work order for this project. I head back to Google to do another search. This time I decide to do a more specific search so I tried awesome twitter headers for business to see if I can find some ideas. I instantly stumble upon one of my favorite sites GraphicRiver.net, which offers a wealth of templates and ideas. I do a search within the GraphicRiver.net for corporate twitter header and see there are 144 examples to choose from within their library. I also see that I can purchase a fully customizable template starting at $3 each. Here s an example: 9

This is great, and a real deal at $3, plus it comes in a variety of colors, and everything from the images, colors and the text is fully customizable. There s also another advantage to using a template. You can see in the example above how much text you need to provide to the graphic designer. It seems like a simple thing, but it is really helpful to know. I was also so impressed with what I was finding at GraphicRiver.net that I decided to do another search, this time for social media covers to see if I could find a complete set that included Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube, and sure enough I find a ton of them. Go check them out by heading over to www.graphicriver.net and doing a search for social media covers. You will not be disappointed. Now, let s get back to developing the job description. As I dug through GraphicRiver, I did find a template that I would like to use. This makes my life much easier because I now know what the images are going to look like. I also know what I need to provide to the graphic designer including: The.zip file from GraphicRiver My headshot for the thumbnail image The text for the headline, sub-headline and the three bullet points My phone number and email address A link to my website so they can change the colors of the images to match the colors of my website A new photo for the left-hand side of the image It is all pretty simple now. The research is done, so I went ahead and wrote the job description for this project. It is called Social Media Cover Images and you will find it and the work order near the back of this guide. 10

These emails will typically be in the neighborhood of 100 words. The topics of the email is. I am not sure what a fair price is for this work, so I just set it to $30. Thanks again, PS I respectfully ask you not to contact me through Facebook, Messenger, Skype, email or by telephone with respect to this project. Have you shared a link to any similar jobs you have completed? Do you feel you are detail oriented? When can you get started? How much time do you need to complete this job once awarded? 60

Work Order Thank you for accepting my project. I am excited and look forward to working with you. Again, I am looking to have 7-part email series written that follows the guidelines outlined by AWeber below. I have included the specific details for each email below. Email #1 Email #2 Email #3 Email #4 Email #6 61

Email #7 In each email I would like you to ask them to give us a call at (000) 000-0000, or provide them with a link to our order form. Insert URL How to Structure a Follow-up Email Series Email #1 Big Benefits: Many of the sales resulting from your follow up series will come after the very first message. Keep this message short. Just take 500 or so words to flesh out a handful of your biggest benefits. For example, part of the Green Garden Lawn Fertilizer company s first message might read: A Lush Lawn: Green Garden Fertilizer will give you a lush lawn in just 2 weeks! Density will increase up to 50% No More Brown: Watch your lawn become 3-5 shades greener with regular treatments. Email #2 Establish a Need: Use your second message to explain why your product is necessary. First, lay out the situation leading to a need for your product. Then, show that your product will meet that need. For instance: Lawns across the country are looking dull. Homeowners water and mow to no avail. But, not those who use Green Garden Fertilizer! They ve created lush, beautiful lawns Email #3 Tool Talk: In your third message, show the lead how he will go about actually using your product. Detail any tools or supporting material that you offer. In the case of our fictional 62

Green Garden Fertilizer, part of this message might read: This treatment is a cinch: Simply attach the included diffuser to the end of your garden hose, creating a sprinkler. Run the sprinkler for 15 minutes each week. You will see an improvement after just one treatment! Email #4 The Wildcard: Customize message four for your unique product. Try one of these ideas: Have a customer case study? This is a great place for it. Selling complimentary products? Detail one of them here. Selling a real-world product? Explain shipping / tracking now. Have a bricks and mortar office? Invite the prospect to visit. Include directions. Are you personally a visible part of your brand? Include your bio here. Email #5 Questions? Comments?: Your lead may be waiting to purchase until you explain one particular thing. By asking outright, you can speed the sales cycle to a close. Start the fifth message by asking your prospect if he has any questions. Give him several ways to reach you, and include your hours of operation and time zone. Email #6 Testimonials: With your sixth message, show off your satisfied customers. Choose several of your best testimonials, and list them here. Look for quotes from customers who are obviously excited about your product, but that still sound believable. For instance, choose: I m thrilled with my Green Garden Fertilizer! Just two weeks, and my lawn looks better than it has in years. Instead of: Green Garden Fertilizer is miraculous! It turned my back lot into a rolling meadow in days and that lot is PAVED! 63

(The testimonials in this article are made up examples. All of your testimonials, however, must be real. Fabricating testimonials is illegal.) Email #7 Last Chance: Your final message serves as one last reminder of your product. Briefly reiterate its most impressive features. Then, throw in a few testimonials or a very short case study. Round out this message with your contact information. Our example product s final message might read: Over the past several weeks, you ve heard about how Green Garden Fertilizer can turn your lawn around. Customer Dusty Dan tried it, and he says, My lawn has never looked better 64
