ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-2379* Issued November 1, 2008 This report is subject to re-examination in one year. www.icc-es.org (800) 423-687 (62) 699-043 A Subsidiary of the International Code Council DIVISION: 03 CONCRETE Section: 0311 Concrete Anchoring REPORT HOLDER: HILTI, INC. 400 SOUTH 122 ND EAST AVENUE TULSA, OKLAHOMA 74146 (800) 879-8000 www.us.hilti.com HiltiTechEng@hilti.com EVALUATION SUBJECT: EXTERIOR OR PERIMETER SILL AND INTERIOR PLATE ANCHORAGES 1.0 EVALUATION SCOPE Compliance with the following codes: # 2006 International Building Code (IBC) # 2006 International Residential Code (IRC) # 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC) Property evaluated: Structural 2.0 USES The Hilti fasteners described in this report are used as alternatives to the cast-in-place anchors described in IBC Section 2308.6, IRC Section R403.1.6 and UBC Section 1806.6 for the anchorage of wood sill plates to normalweight concrete foundations. 3.0 DESCRIPTION 3.1 Fasteners: The Hilti fasteners are powder-actuated fasteners with preattached washers. The X-DNI 72, X-ZF 72 and X-CF 72 fasteners and preattached washers are manufactured from carbon steel, with an electro-deposited zinc coating complying with ASTM B 633 SC 1, Type III. The X-CP 72 fasteners and preattached washers are manufactured from carbon steel and are mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B 69 Type I, minimum Class. The X-CR-L 72 fasteners are manufactured from SAE 316 SS and the preattached washers are manufactured from SAE 304 SS. See Figures 1 through 3 for depictions of the fasteners. 3.2 Concrete: The concrete must be uncracked, stone aggregate, normal-weight concrete complying with IBC Section 190, IRC R402.2 or UBC Section 190. Concrete must have a minimum compressive strength at 28 days (fn c ) of 2,00 psi (17.2 MPa) (IBC and IRC) or 2,000 psi (13.8 MPa) (UBC). 3.3 Sill Plates: The sill plates are nominally 2-inch-thick lumber that is naturally durable or preservative-treated in accordance with the applicable code. See the footnotes to Table 1 for specific gravity requirements. 4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION 4.1 General: The use of the fasteners to attach wood sill plates to the concrete must be under the following conditions: 1. No cold joint exists, between the slab and foundation, below the sill plate. 2. The sill plate is not installed on slabs supported by concrete-block foundation walls. 3. Only the X-CP 72 and the X-CR-L 72 fasteners are allowed to be used to attach preservative-treated wood to concrete. The X-DNI 72, X-ZF 72 and X-CF 72 fasteners may be used to attach naturally durable wood to concrete. 4. Where sill plates are installed on foundation walls with unbalanced soil conditions, the Hilti sill plate fasteners are not used to provide lateral support at the top of the foundation wall, and are not an alternate to the bolting required by IRC Section R404.1. 4.2 Design: Table 1 specifies the allowable fastener spacings for attachment of wood sill plates to concrete foundations in Seismic Design Category A or B (IBC or IRC) and Seismic Zones 0, 1, 2 and 3 (UBC), and in areas assigned basic wind speeds up to 100 mph (161 km/h) for a 3-second gust wind speed or 8 mph (137 km/h) for a fastest mile wind speed. For sill plate connections in Seismic Design Category A or B (IBC or IRC) and Seismic Zones 0, 1, 2 and 3 (UBC) in areas assigned basic wind speeds of 10 mph (169 km/h) or greater (3-second gust) or 90 mph (14 km/h) or greater, (fastest mile), an engineered design using allowable loads described in Table 2 must be provided to the code official for approval. Exception: These seismic and wind limitations may be waived for interior non-shear walls. *Revised June 2009 ICC-ES Evaluation Reports are not to be construed as representing aesthetics or any other attributes not specifically addressed, nor are they to be construed as an endorsement of the subject of the report or a recommendation for its use. ESR-2379 Most Widely Accepted and Trusted Page 2 of 4 4.3 Installation: The fasteners are to be installed in accordance with this report and the manufacturer s published installation instructions. A copy of the instructions is to be available on the jobsite at all times during installation. Installation of the X-DNI 72, X-ZF 72, X-CF 72 and X-CP 72 fasteners is limited to dry, interior locations. The X-CR-L 72 fasteners may be installed in exterior or damp locations. The X-CP 72 and the X-CR-L 72 fasteners may be installed in preservative-treated lumber. Fastener placement requires the use of a low-velocity, powderactuated tool in accordance with the manufacturer s recommendations. The concrete must attain a minimum compressive strength of 2,000 psi (13.8 MPa) prior to installation of the fasteners. The fasteners must be installed through the sill plate. Minimum edge distance is 1 3 / 4 inches (44 mm). Concrete thickness must be a minimum of three times the embedment of the fastener into the concrete..0 CONDITIONS OF USE The exterior or perimeter sill and interior plate anchorages described in this report comply with, or are suitable alternatives to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following conditions:.1 The fasteners are manufactured and identified in accordance with this report..2 Fastener installation complies with this report and the manufacturer s published installation instructions. In the event of conflict between this report and the manufacturer s published installation instructions, this report governs..3 For sill plate connections in 10 mph (169 km/h) 3- second gust wind speed or 90 mph (14 km/h) fastest mile wind speed areas, and Seismic Design Categories A and B (IBC) or Seismic Zones 0, 1, 2 and 3 (UBC), calculations demonstrating that the applied loads are less than the allowable fastener loads described in Table 2 and do not exceed the capacity of the sill plate, must be submitted to the code official for approval. The calculations are to be prepared by a registered design professional where required by the statutes of the jurisdiction in which the project is constructed..4 The use of fasteners is limited to installation in uncracked concrete. Cracking occurs when f t > f r due to service loads or deformations.. The minimum concrete thickness must be three times the fastener embedment in concrete..6 X-CR-L 72 fasteners may be used in exterior, damp environments. For all other fasteners in this report, installation is limited to dry, interior locations..7 The X-CP 72 and the X-CR-L 72 fasteners may be installed in contact with preservative-treated wood complying with IBC Section 2303.1.8 or IRC Section R319, as applicable. Use of other fasteners in this report is limited to installation in naturally durable wood..8 When the sill plates are supported by foundation walls with unbalanced soil conditions, the Hilti sill plate fasteners are not used to transfer lateral load from the wall to the sill plate and are not alternates to the anchor bolts required by IRC Section R404.1..9 The fasteners must be installed by personnel certified by Hilti, and having a current, Hilti-issued operator s license. 6.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Fasteners Power-driven into Concrete, Steel and Masonry Elements (AC70), dated October 2006. 7.0 IDENTIFICATION Each package of fasteners is identified with the manufacturer s name (Hilti) and address, the fastener type and size, and the evaluation report number (ESR-2379). Additionally, an H or HI is imprinted on the fastener heads, as shown in Figures 1 through 3. Furthermore, each fastener type has a unique alphanumeric code as well as the name HILTI stamped on the premounted washer. Refer to Figures 4 through 8 for depictions of the premounted washers.
