Nice Book of Studies By Los Angeles Master I am not a fan of chess studies per se. I mostly approach books like this from the perspective of a practical chess player who is looking to improve my ability to play chess or my understanding of it. This book is a collection of endgame studies on the theme of "domination": that is, trapping pieces or otherwise rendering them ineffective. It is not a theoretical endgame book by any means. It is more interested in looking at exceptions to the rules rather than the rules themselves. In that sense, it could be considered a collection of tactical one-offs. That having been said, most of the positions in this book look reasonably natural, in that they could have occurred in a real game. There are some exceptions, but overall this is not a book of unnatural chess problem positions that you might find a in chess problem book containing, say, self-mates in 5 moves. I am finding this book useful in two respects. First, although the positions covered are studies and therefore tend to be fairly subtle, I found a significant number (less than half, but more than a third) of them to be solvable. (To place this in perspective, my FIDE rating is around 2350.) In fact, for many of the solutions, you only need to look 4 to 6 moves deep, but you must find some surprising idea (or combination of such ideas) in order to come up with the solution. As a result, this book serves quite well as a collection of fairly advanced tactics puzzles.
Second, this book is largely about piece coordination. The recurring theme is better coordinated (and often weaker) pieces prevailing over less coordinated (and often stronger) ones. As a result, spending some time with this book can really drive home the point that the value of a particular piece often depends on the specifics of the position rather than some general estimate. And there is a lot of study material here regarding the types of things specific pieces do well and the things that they do not do well. There are 2,545 studies in this book. I am spending about 4 to 10 minutes on average with each one (2-5 minutes to try and solve the study and another 2-5 minute to look at the solution and try to draw some conclusions). At this rate it will take me hundreds of hours to to get through this book. And by the time I finish I will have forgotten the earlier studies enough that I can start all over again. So for the price the book is actually quite a good value. For practical players, this book is probably most useful as a supplement to other training methods which will test your visualization skills and your ability to find unusual tactical ideas. For people who are actually interested in studies for their own sake, I would imagine that this book is a goldmine of beautiful ideas. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Get this, and skip everything else By Stacy Robinson Its common knowledge that endgame study produces the most improvement in chess-but what about tactics/position play? Well, these studies are a sort of hybrid of all three of these areas. And there are so many that if you did 5 a day, it would still take years to get through the book, and boy are they tough. Must buy books for any chess lover By Ransith Fernando In this book consists of 2545 chess positions that you need to solve. These positions are divided into sections like "minor piece traps minor piece", and for each of these sections one or more examples are given on a how this is done. For each example you have the relevent position numbers indicated. Once you know the example keeping this in mind you are expected to solve the positions. Looks easy but the positions are really hard and interesting. I got this book as a gift in1981 and I have only done around 50 positions from it.
