As a child, I would have grand conversations with myself about what I would be when I grew up. I ran the gamut of archaeologist, lawyer, graphic designer, computer scientist, nurse, theologian and historian. Basically I wanted to do it all. While I worked to narrow down that list I wondered, Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? I knew early on I had certain traits that propelled me towards helping others. It felt right and brought me tremendous joy. As I got older I thought deeply about what that ultimately meant for my life and how I could walk on that path every day. It started to become clear to me what my purpose was. I honed in on how I would change my life so my purpose aligned with my everyday life. I didn t want it to be just something I picked up on the weekend when time allowed or as the thought crossed my mind. It didn t happen overnight. It took a few years to fully understand exactly what my purpose was and how I could live in that place every day. I learned quickly having a career and having a purpose are two different things. Having a career means having a job which produces a source of income. It may not necessarily be something you love or like but instead allows you to put food on the table and pay bills. In comparison, having a purpose directly relates to what you re most passionate about. Your purpose brings you joy filling your days and nights with something that makes you feel whole. You ll notice when you re living your purpose you re not as tired when you re engaged in what you re meant to do. Every day you feel more fulfilled, happy and settled. Some have been able to weave their purpose into their career. Those who have accomplished that worked diligently to make one marry to the other so the journey is rewarding and lucrative. DID YOU KNOW That feeling that something is missing goes away when you lead a purpose-filled life. The real purpose of anyone's life is to be fully involved in living it. Discover your purpose.
Some people go years without knowing their purpose or even how to identify it. I created this spreadsheet to help guide you in identifying your purpose. It s a step-by-step worksheet that will show you what areas you re most passionate about. When you ve completed this step-by-step guide, your purpose and purpose statement will be clear. Keep in mind, it s not uncommon to have more than one purpose or have your purpose evolve as the seasons in your life change. Life is an ever evolving series of lessons learned and seasons that change us for the better. Take some time to answer the questions below. Think about you, not what others think of you or who they want you to be but what s authentically you. Once you have answered each question, look for themes in your answers. If I couldn t fail what would I be being today? If I had a never-ending bank account what would I be doing?
I totally rock at? I have no concept of time when I? If I pushed other people's thoughts and perceptions out of my mind, I d be doing what?
If I could choose any job in the world what would it be? What skills come to you naturally without thought and effort? What do you love to do in your free time?
What types of activities bring you joy and light up your life? In what areas are you looked at as an expert? What standards and values do you hold near and dear to your heart?
List out careers you ve heard several times from different people you d be really great at? What are goals do you have for your life? What do you want to be remembered for? What do you want to be your legacy?
Go back and review each of your answers. Take some time to think in depth about each answer, take notice of any trends. As you reflect, ask yourself how each answer resonates with you. How does it make you feel? Does it strike a chord? Do you feel joy? Are you brought to tears? Going through this process will lead you to your purpose statement. I ve added a few sheets for you to reflect further and write down additional thoughts as they come to you. Once you've crafted your purpose statement, sign and date it. Why?
