Digital Workflow Creating a digital workflow will allow you to develop a systematic approach to the way you shoot, process and edit your photography. I am going to explain my own digital workflow, from the planning of the shoot, gear preparations, camera usage, image in-gestation, file backup, editing adjustments to print. 1. Pre-Planning: View sun rise and set times as well as project weather for the date of the shoot. Refresh concept of posing techniques and modifying light depending on the type of shoot. Maybe do a pre-site survey. 2. Gear Preparations: Charge all batteries, format all cards and clean your lenses. Always have a backup batter and memory card. Number your cards 1, 2, 3 ect. With a piece of gaff tape. Move the tape over the card case once the card is full. This lets you know that the card is already been used. Set the camera clock for syncing two cameras. If your camera's LCD can be adjusted for brightness, make the preview look like a properly exposed image. Do not reformat your cards on the computer -- you may risk making the card unreadable in your camera. 3. Capture Images: Shoot a variety of images for various vantage points and exposures. 4. Image In-gestation: This is where you transfer your images to the computer. I use a card reader as opposed to the camera. This saves the camera battery and also frees up the camera. Additionally, a card reader is simpler and compact. If you have a lot of images it may be worth getting a faster card reader to speed up the transfer rate. Once the images are on the computer, I do a basic sort or my first pass processing. I am looking to delete obvious bad exposure, out of focus, closed eyes, redundant images and poor composition. I still have not formatted the card that the images came from at this point. At this point I do a batch rename of the images using Adobe Bridge. This allows me to quickly rename the images to a sequenced # and name. Example: 001- DiMasso. The 001 allows the client to reference an image for ordering purposes and the DiMasso tells me the clients name in the image. This can be found by going to Tools > Batch Rename in Adobe Bridge. Adobe Bridge allows you to rate your images by assigning a one through five star rating. I usually give the awesome images a five star rating and use them as my starting point in the editing process. 5. File Backup: At this point, I copy the images to my back up hard drive and burn a dvd or cd as an archive of the shoot. Once I have the images in two places, I format the memory card. After the entire shoot has went through my digital post-productions editing, the updated images will replace the previous back up and a new dvd or cd is burned. 6. Editing Adjustments: I use Bridge as my image viewing software but will do my additional image adjustments in Photoshop. I can now sort my images based on the rankings or a manual sort. To open the images form Bridge you just double click them and they will open in Photoshop. I will make my edits, save the file and close it. Duplicate background Adjustments layer for curves to adjust exposure Adjustments for color corrections Adjustment layer for contrast adjustment Clone stamp blemishes and distractions Layer for sharpening or blurring Save image, upload or print 7. Update File Backup: Update your folder with the most recent images to your back up hard drive and burn a dvd or cd as an archive of the shoot.
