South Africa Dollmaking Festival 2018 DAG Supported Event and Qualified Competition CENTURION, GAUTENG, SOUTH AFRICA 16 TH 18 TH AUGUST 2018 You are invited to participate in the South Africa Doll Competition! Doll Artisan Guild Awards The Millie is awarded to the best Antique Reproduction from categories 1-9 The Magge is awarded to the best Modern Doll from categories 24-29 Those who have previously won a Millie or Magge will receive a Gold Rosette. DAG members are eligible for these awards. South Africa Dollmaking Competition Awards The Protea This trophy will be awarded to the entry chosen from the Best of Category entries from Non-DAG members in the Antique Reproduction categories 1-9. The Yellowwwod This trophy will be chosen from the Best of Category entries in from Non-DAG members in the Modern Doll categories 24-30. There will be a special Rosette awarded to the Best Of Category Rosette Winner in the Special Theme category The Great Gatsby. Judges Choice Rosette this trophy will be chosen from the Best of Category Rosettes in categories 21 22 - Antique and Modern. Rosette Winners in Costuming Categories 61 64 will compete for the Costuming Award of Excellence Antique and Modern. Please note that there will only be one award in this category and will be chosen from both modern and antique categories. There will be only one People s Choice Rosette which will be chosen from all categories. This rosette will be given at the Awards night dinner and will be chosen by ballot. All delegates may view the dolls, during the public choice allotted viewing time, and are eligible to vote. The award will go to the doll with the most votes. Voting forms will be included in the registration packs. Best Novice Award - this award will be given to the doll considered by the judges to be the best novice entry in all categories and will receive a special Rosette. Questions? Dollmaking Categories: Authentic Reproduction of Antiques (Dolls dated up to 1939) 1 Baby and Toddlers 6 French Children 20-31 (50-78cm) 2 German Children with 7 Fashion Dolls (Gibson, China, Glass Eyes Parian, Rochard) and Mechanicals (inc 3 German Children with Walking dolls) Painted eyes 4 French Children under 9 Doll-House and All-Bisque up to 10 12 (30cm)* (25cm) 5 French Children 12-20 30-50cm) Open Categories China Paint as you wish 19 Special theme Category - ** The Great Gatsby ** Please note that Group Scenes will be accepted in this category, but dolls will be judged separately 21 Fantasy Dolls* (Paint and costume as you wish using any head, Modern or Antique) 22 Decorative Porcelain Art and Half Dolls (Masks, figurines, statuettes, eggs, brooches, ornaments, decorated shoulder-heads, for example Parian or China dolls, marottes, lace draping, box scenes, Jack-in-the-box, shoes and more). Main part of the item must be porcelain and china painted. Accessories and decorations may be glued on. 23 Miniature 1/12 th scale. All entries in this category should be in 1/12 th dollhouse scale Modern Doll Artists Dolls: Re-create as you wish including fairytale or fictional doll, using doll head sculpted after 1939. Appropriate body required. DDP categories 28 AND 29: Must have painted upper and lower lashes. No glue-on lashes. All dolls must be incised in the greenware, in the head (shoulder heads on plate) with initials and year (4 digits). The following types of dolls may not be entered: Dolls that have been entered before in a DAG- or DAG-qualified competition, commercial work, entries made from kits (purchased, soft-fired bisque kits are ok), entries with studio markings, entries made in seminar, class (meaning: in a class setting under the tutelage/guidance of a teacher/instructor), work in private lessons; work by D.A.G. judges, instructors, and teachers. * All-Bisque body allowed ** All-Bisque body allowed up to 18 (45cm) Body made of 80% porcelain or more will be considered all-bisque and doll size is restricted as noted. Novice Category an entrant that has only been making dolls for less than 12 months or who has not made dolls in many years and has recently begun doll making again. This category will cover both Antique Reproduction Dolls as well as Modern Dolls. All dolls will be submitted with an affidavit signed by the entrant s teacher and entrants may be new DAG members or non-dag members. Doll Artisan Member Contestants are committed to help out for a period of 1 hour during the convention where assistance may be needed; such as guarding the exhibit. This is the only way we are able to arrange competitions of this kind. We require all of our entrants to help protect the dolls on display. Each contestant accepts that his/her entries will be photographed by the Doll Artisan Guild. The right to publish and use these photos belongs to the Doll Artisan Guild. Please understand the importance of following the rules. It will make the judging easier and you will avoid losing unnecessary points.

DAG School of Dollmaking Title: You must have enrolled in the DAG School of Dollmaking and paid the appropriate fee for each title and submitted an affidavit with your doll BEFORE judging for the ribbon to be valid for your title. Only DAG members may submit dolls with affidavit. Please see Doll Artisan Guild School of Dollmaking Title Program information page. Maximum doll size: 30 Maximum base size: 12 x 12 When displaying dolls, ensure that your dolls are secured to their stands. that all accessories are attached to the dolls. Doll Artisan Guild Read below if you are interested in entering dolls for the DOLL ARTISAN GUILD SCHOOL OF DOLL MAKING (DAGSD) TITLES DAG Master of Dollmaking titles: Classic: This title requires that you win at least a red ribbon in a qualified authentic reproduction category. Modern: This title requires that you win at least a red ribbon in category for Modern Dolls in Dimensional Doll Painting (DDP) with Painted Eyes. General: If you win a blue ribbon your Master s certificate will be marked with honors. You must make the dress and underwear for the doll yourself and sign a special affidavit to this effect.* DAG Grand Master of Dollmaking title: Requires blue ribbon either in category for authentic reproduction or in category for Modern Dolls in Dimensional Doll Painting (DDP) and with painted eyes in DDP Technique. Certain dolls are excluded. You must make the entire costume, underwear, wig, shoes, stockings, hat, and eventual accessories yourself. See affidavit for Grand Master title for further information.* The ribbon requirement for the GM title might be waived for dollmakers age 70 and up. Please contact DAG for further details. DAG Triple Crown of Dollmaking title: Requires a high blue ribbon (min. 95 points) either in category for authentic reproduction or in category for Modern Dolls in Dimensional Doll Painting (DDP) and with painted eyes in DDP technique. Certain dolls - including boy dolls - are excluded. Dolls chosen, must have feathered eyebrows and painted upper and lower lashes. Complete details on affidavit.* DAG Dollmaking Award of Excellence title: Requires blue ribbon in each of 4 categories: Choose from Authentic reproduction: Babies & Toddlers, Decorative Art & Half Dolls, Doll House and All-Bisques, Costuming. Also included are Fantasy dolls and Modern Dolls in Dimensional Doll Painting (DDP) with painted eyes in DDP technique. Dolls chosen, must have feathered eyebrows and painted upper and lower lashes. Complete details on affidavit.* General Information AFFIDAVITS MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED You may enter more than one doll with affidavit in teproductions Categories and the DDP Category are the only ones in which you can enter dolls with affidavit.* Affidavit(s) will only be accepted with doll if you have completed the DAGSD part on the registration form. (You may change your mind and enter without affidavit if you wish.) Only people who have pre-registered their affidavit(s) may graduate at this event. Affidavit forms will be sent to you (see registration form). Signed affidavit must accompany your doll(s). (Junior and Senior categories are not eligible.) You must be a member of D.A.G. to enter a doll with affidavit. Your affidavit will be accepted even if you are not enrolled in DAGSD. To receive your title, you must have enrolled in DAGSD and have paid the fee (one fee for each title). The fee must have been received at least four (4) months before planned graduation date at the Doll Artisan Guild office in NY. Note. You may only receive one title per event, unless you have already completed all requirements for at least one title including the ribbon. All seminar points must be completed at least two (2) months prior to graduation. Any ribbon must be less than two (2) years old at time of completion of requirements for title, except Triple Crown title that allows four (4) years and DAG Award of Excellence that allows five (5) years. If you expect to graduate at this event, check the list posted at Doll Check-in, and the final list that will be posted after the judging is completed.
