Speakers Bios S. Isaac Escobedo has been practicing law since 2003. He began his career as a Deputy District Attorney in Merced County where he gained invaluable litigation experience doing multiple court and jury trials. He was one of three attorneys in the General Felony Department which was usually reserved for attorneys with many more years of experience. He was also a Deputy City Attorney for the City of Merced where he acted as counsel for Parks & Recreation and Code Enforcement. Isaac has been practicing workers' compensation law since June 2009. S. Isaac Escobedo, Esq. Isaac is currently Senior Counsel at Mullen & Filippi. Isaac received his law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2003. He was a scholarship recipient all three years and was also a Summer Fellow at the East San Jose Community Law Center. He attended the University of California at Davis where he earned degrees in economics and religious studies. Isaac has been married for 11 years and has three children. He enjoys watching movies with his family and acting out movie scenes with his kids. Joel E. Kautz, Esq. was born and raised in Colorado. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Colorado State University in 2003. In 2009 Joel graduated, With Distinction, from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. While in law school Joel was part of the Appellate and International Advocacy Honors program and was inducted into the Traynor Honor Society. After graduating from law school Joel worked at a Fortune 500 insurance company handling the company's regulatory compliance concerns. Joel joined the Lenahan law firm in 2011 and currently works in the office's workers' compensation defense practice as an associate attorney. While not practicing law, Joel enjoys spending time with family, friends, his wife Jennifer and his daughter Adelaide. Joel E. Kautz, Esq. Speakers Bios Samuel C. Mullin, III, Esq. is a partner in the California law firm of Hodson & Mullin with offices in Fairfield and Vacaville. The firm represents clients in family law, workers compensation, social security disability and personal injury. Sam graduated from Grove City College, Grove City, PA in 1989 with a B.A. in Political Science. Sam was an Air Force ROTC student in college and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation. Sam delayed entry into active duty and attended Capital University Law School, Columbus, OH, graduating in 1982 with a Juris Doctorate. Sam was a member of the Moot Court Team while in law school. Samuel C. Mullin, III, Esq. Sam and his law partner established the firm in 1992. Sam represents injured workers before the Workers Compensation Appeals Board, represents claimants before the Social Security Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, and represents plaintiffs in person injury litigation. Sam has been a certified specialist in Workers Compensation Law since 1999. Sam is a member of the California Applicants Attorneys Association. Sam is married to Karen, a Home Hospice nurse with Kaiser. Sam has two adult daughters. Nicholas Matassa has been practicing law since 2017, beginning his career at Smolich & Smolich Law Offices. Prior to admission to the California State Bar, Nicholas was a paralegal and hearing representative with Smolich & Smolich. Nicholas attended Lincoln Law School of Sacramento s evening program while working as a hearing representative. He was placed on the Dean s List throughout the entirety of his education, and ultimately graduated Magna Cum Laude and Salutatorian. He also attended the University of California Santa Barbara where he earned his B.A. in political science. When not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his wife paddle boarding, bike riding, hiking, and exploring Northern California. He also has a sincere passion assisting other aspiring lawyers get through law school and prepare for the Bar exam. Nicholas Matassa, Esq.
Speakers Bios Mark Steinberg, Esq. was born in Canada, and grew up in Sacramento, graduating from Hiram Johnson High School. He graduated from California State University, Sacramento with honors, with a B.S. in Government in 1984. He is a 1988 graduate of King Hall, the Law School at the University of California, Davis. He is licensed to practice in California and the state of Washington. Mark Steinberg, Esq. Mr. Steinberg is a certified specialist in Workers Compensation. His practice is exclusively dedicated to representing injured workers before the California Workers Compensation Appeals Board, with a special focus on Law Enforcement officers. Mr. Steinberg s interests include historical miniature war gaming, reading (military history), and target shooting.
