Hello Future Fifth Grade Students and Parents/Guardians! We are excited to tell you about the Summer Reading Program. This year we also encourage you to also take part in the Emily Williston Library s summer reading program. It takes place in July, and is a great way to get your summer reading books done AND win great prizes!! Students may also earn rewards from their classroom teacher for books they read over the summer!!! Each incoming fifth grader must: Read AT LEAST 2 books (preferably more). One book must be related to American History from early colonization (Plymouth and Jamestown) up to westward expansion. We ve made a list of great books for you! Keep a reading log of all the books read over the summer Bring your log to school during the first week in September so you ll be ready to plan a project to share a book you read with your new classmates. Fifth graders will use the books they read over the summer to help them learn about new classmates and share their love of reading with friends and teachers, as well as to make a list of books they are interested in reading during the school year. We find this experience to be a valuable way of learning about each other and developing a classroom culture that values literacy. There are many places to look for good books. What is most important is that you select a book that is just right -a book that is neither too easy, nor too hard. Please don t select books you have previously read. Your books may be either fiction (imaginative) or non-fiction (true, also known as informational). You may read a book with a parent or guardian or listen to the book on tape or CD. Have a great summer sharing books with your family and friends! Sincerely, Ms. Balise, principal Mrs. Pasquini-Torchia, asst. principal Fifth Grade Teachers
