PREVIEIEW IEIEIEIE The Erie Canal was built in the early 1800s to create a navigable water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. This was very important because there were no railroads at that time, and the canal provided an innovative way to transport goods. Mules were hitched to barges to haul them along the canal. The boat crews (canallers) and passengers often had to wait in line at the locks for long periods of time. This gave them time for leisure activities; one favorite pastime was making music. Canallers and passengers of all ages enjoyed singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments! The famous song Erie Canal tells of the hard work that boatmen endured; the partner song tells of the fun they had making music along the way. Copyright 2018 by Alfred Music All Rights Reserved.
