SUCCESSFUL GOAL SETTING TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY 2017 A presentation to Ian Locke Shirley Hensher

HEALTH AND FITNESS IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS Good employee physical and mental health: Productivity Retention Employee relations Stress Absenteeism AND GOOD FOR YOU You can give clients and employees your full support and attention You are your business You are your brand Your family deserve the best version of you! when I'm healthy and exercising, eating right and getting enough rest, I'm much more productive at work, Chip Bergh, CEO Levi

THE HALF LIFE OF NEW YEAR S RESOLUTIONS Source: Statistics.com No. 1 resolution for 2017 is to lose weight and eat more healthily

1. ARE YOUR GOALS YOUR GOALS? What is more likely to spur you into action? I want to be able to take the team on a team build without fear of collapse or I want energy throughout the day to enable me to focus on my clients and team effectively My partner/doctor says I should lose weight or I should be fitter and thinner for my age Could, should, won t Could, should, don t (Jim Rohn)

2. MAKE YOUR GOALS S.M.A.R.T. What do you want to change/achieve exactly? How will you know when you have got there? How will you reach it? Why is this the right goal for you? What is your deadline for achieving your goal? A deadline will keep you focussed. Specifc Measureable Attainable Relevant Timebound I want to follow a healthy eating plan to lose weight and feel more confident when presenting and meeting clients I will be 10lbs lighter. My favourite work outfit will comfortably Hire a personal trainer Join a slimming club. Right time Aligns with other goals Emotional connection I am going to wear my favourite work outfit to the industry conference on X date 1 Not at all How committed are you? 10 Totally

3. BE CLEAR ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF INACTION AND ACTION WARNING! There are positive AND negative consequences with each If you take away cheeky burgers and alcohol, how will you deal with stress? If you impose healthy eating rules on the office, what happens to morale?

4. WILLPOWER IS A FINITE RESOURCE Make fitness/healthy eating goals non-negotiable by: Anticipating potential hurdles (events, buffet tables) - know your points of low resistance! Build processes and strategies into your routines Tack good habits onto your daily/automatic actions Myth: The fact that you aren t where you want to be should be motivation enough Fact: Every time you resist a temptation, your ability to resist another one is depleted or or

5. START SMALL AND BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE Build yourself a track record of success one step at a time e.g.: 20 minute walk daily Improve sleep Replace carbohydrates with protein for breakfast It takes 66 days to pick up a new daily habit Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Source: European Journal of Social Psychology, 2009

6. HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE Set clear targets and log your progress on a weekly or even daily basis. Source accountability partners: A friend could undertake to phone you each day or each week for an update Commit to run with friends or give someone a lift to the gym Join a club of like-minded people Tell Business Village about your fitness plans Sign up your team to the challenge and introduce some healthy competition Make an appointment with personal trainer (just saying!) These are support mechanisms not sticks to beat yourself with!

There are bound to be some hiccups along the way Don t give up Don t beat yourself up 7. DON T BEAT YOURSELF UP Learn from the hiccups and refocus Identify the triggers: Poor eating emotion? Not planning ahead? Not getting to the gym didn t diarise it? Didn t have a Plan B? If this happens regularly, assess your level of commitment to your goals Fall down 7 times, stand up 8 (Chinese proverb)

8. DON T WAIT TO CELEBRATE Identify key milestones and mini deadlines opportunities to celebrate your success along the way Reward doing the right things consistently rather than outcomes Choose your rewards carefully! Be proud of your achievements Let the Business Village celebrate with you!
