The Top 4 Book s For Kids To Read By Amber Munro-Fellowes The reviews have been put together by Amber at Hot Chocolate Club. Amber is 12 years old and we want to point this out, in case you are looking for books for a different age group. Amber has specifically chosen these books because they were easy for her to read and gave her a sense of adventure. She also learnt about nature and enjoyed using her imagination while reading these books. Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 1

The Top 4 Book s For Kids To Read By Amber Munro-Fellowes Helpful book buying tips for Kids Of course, children will have different interests. For example, some might prefer science, or magic, so when looking for books for your children you might want to keep in mind they may prefer something different. When buying books for kids it is important to consider what they are currently into as kids tend to have sensitive periods where they really get something and are hungry for more on that topic. Aware parents can capitalise on this by listening and watching. From a money stand-point, and so you can avoid disappointment, it may be best to borrow a book from a library or friend before buying a book or series. If they like it you can buy it often kids reread their favourite books several times or buy other books from the same series. It can help your kids enjoy the book even more if one or both the adults in the house read the book at some point too. This means the adventure can be shared and discussed. In our reviews we ve given you an outline of the plot, some comments on the book and a rating. While these are the Hot Chocolate Club s top 4 books, we appreciate there are lots of other books that your kids will have enjoyed and we d love to know what you would add to our list and why. Let us and the rest of the Hot Chocolate Club Community at http://www.facebook.com/hotchocolateclubcommunity. About Hot Chocolate Club and this resource Hot Chocolate Club was established in appreciation of two facts: 1. Kids want and need more of their parent s time and energy. 2. Parents are busy and need to know how to make the biggest impact on their kids in the few short years they have to positively influence them. Hot Chocolate Club is the idea of Neil Fellowes, an entrepreneur dedicated to helping the world become a better place, and his daughter Amber. Amber & Dad, Neil Fellowes at Hot Chocolate Club Neil s work is to inspire the parents into having the biggest impact on their children in the limited time available, while Amber s job is to inspire the kids to gain the most possible from their parent s knowledge, abilities and guidance. This e-guide is intended to inspire you and help you to connect more with your kids and we do hope you enjoy it. Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 3

Book 1 Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is a series of books. The first of which is Wolf Brother. Series in Order It s based in ancient times and what I love about this book is that it s full of adventure plus it s also good to imagine a world before cars, planes, satellite TV, mobile phones and Facebook. Book Blurb Torak is alone...wounded, terrified and on the run. An outcast like his father, he has avoided all contact with the clans - until now. Now his father lies dead: slaughtered by a demon in the form of a great bear. Somehow, Torak must keep going. His only ally is an orphaned wolf cub. His only chance of survival is his skill as a hunter. But starvation isn't the only thing in the Forest to fear. Through the whispering spruce trees comes an evil more terrible than any clan can imagine, let alone defeat. The Moon of Red Willow is fast approaching: and soon Torak-and only Torak-must face a foe he can neither outrun nor outwit; a foe who stalks him as silently as breath. Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Amber s Summary If you enjoy this first book, make sure that you read the other 5 books in the series! It is a very exciting adventure series and you will be dying to read the rest. It is a very, very good read! Here are the other books in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Series 1. Wolf Brother 2. Spirit Walker 3. Soul Eater 4. Outcast 5. Oath Breaker 6. Ghost Hunter Hot Chocolate Club rating: **** Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 5

Book 2 How to Train Your Dragon The How to Train Your Dragon series is very funny. It is about a Viking boy named Hiccup who is a great hero, but doesn t want to be a hero. What I love about this book is the fact that it is absolutely hilarious. Here is the blurb from the cover: 10 boys of the Hooligan Tribe intend to become full members of the Hooligan Tribe by passing the Dragon Initation Programme. 2 boys, Hiccup, son of the Chief Stoick the Vast and Fishlegs, Hiccup's friend who has a squint and allergy to reptiles, are hasty about it. Everyone else is big, tough and manly like Vikings should be, but Hiccup and Fishlegs are skinny. Gobber the Belch, the soldier in charge of Initation leads the Vikings-to-be to Wild Dragon Cliff, where they have to complete the first part of the Dragon Iniation Programme: catching their own Dragon. Fishlegs awakes all the young dragons when he tries to get a deadly nadder. In a rush to escape, Hiccup gives Fishlegs his basic run and runs back to grab a different dragon. Gobber the Belch saves the boys from attacking dragons, but scolds them later. Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 6

How to Train Your Dragon If you re not much of a book reader, then you could always watch the movie but bear in mind that there is very little in the movie that is in the book. Here are all the books in the series: 1. How to train your dragon 2. How to be a pirate 3. How to speak dragonese 4. How to cheat a dragons curse 5. How to twist a dragons tale 6. A hero s guide to deadly dragons 7. How to ride a dragons storm 8. How to break a dragons heart 9. How to steal a dragons sword Hot Chocolate Club Rating: **** Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 7

Book 3 The Precious Present Here is the blurb from the cover: Once there was a boy.... Who listened to an old man. And, thus, he began to learn about The Precious Present. "It is a present because it is a gift," the contented man explained. "And it is precious because anyone who receives such a present is happy forever." "Wow!" the little boy exclaimed. "I hope someone gives me The Precious Present. Maybe I'll get it for Christmas." The boy ran off to play. And the old man smiled. He liked to watch the little boy play. He saw the smile on the youngster's face and heard him laughing as he swung from a nearby tree. The boy was happy. And it was a joy to se The old man also liked to watch the boy work. He even rose early on Saturday mornings to watch the little labourer mow the lawn across the street. The boy actually whistled while he worked. The little child was happy no matter what he was doing. It was, indeed, a joy to behold. When he thought about what the old man had said, the boy thought he understood. He knew about presents. Like the bicycle he got for his birthday and the gifts he found under the tree on Christmas morning. But as the boy thought more about it, he knew. The joy of toys never lasts forever. The boy began to feel uneasy. "What then," he wondered, "is The Precious Present? What could possibly make me happy forever?" He found it difficult to even imagine the answer. And so he returned to ask the old man. Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 8

The Precious Present Ambers Summary The Precious Present is a very interesting story. It s got a good little tale to it. It s really simple and quite a quick read and one of those books you might read a few times, because it makes you think. When I read it I realised that there is no greater gift than now. When you first read it, you start to wonder, what really is the Precious Present? Hot Chocolate Club Rating: ***** Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 9

Book 4 Jonathon Livingston Seagull If you sometimes feel like an outsider because you re bored with conformity or the stupid arguments that happen at school over petty little things that have no meaning or you ve ever felt different to other people or if you ve ever felt you ve got some special gifts or talents and you want to release the talent, I think you will really like this book. Jonathan Livingstone Seagul is again quite a short book, about 150 pages and some of them have picture on, so it won t take you too long to go from cover to cover. Here is the blurb from the cover: The book tells the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a seagull who is bored with the daily squabbles over food. Seized by a passion for flight, he pushes himself, learning everything he can about flying, until finally his unwillingness to conform results in his expulsion from his flock. An outcast, he continues to learn, becoming increasingly pleased with his abilities as he leads an idyllic life. One day, Jonathan is met by two gulls who take him to a "higher plane of existence" in that there is no heaven but a better world found through perfection of knowledge, where he meets other gulls who love to fly. He discovers that his sheer tenacity and desire to learn make him "pretty well a one-in-a-million bird." Jonathan befriends the wisest gull in this new place, named Chiang, who takes him beyond his previous learning, teaching him how to move instantaneously to anywhere else in the Universe. Tel: 020 8144 0225 email: jo@hotchocolateclub.com 10

Jonathon Livingston Seagull The secret, Chiang says, is to "begin by knowing that you have already arrived." Not satisfied with his new life, Jonathan returns to Earth to find others like him, to bring them his learning and to spread his love for flight. His mission is successful, gathering around him others who have been outlawed for not conforming. Ultimately, the very first of his students, Fletcher Lynd Seagull, becomes a teacher in his own right and Jonathan leaves to teach other flocks.
