Welcome to the NAA Art Education Program "Where Art is For Everyone" The NAA Education program is open to everyone. Explore painting, dig into clay, talk art, meet other artists, learn how to draw or attempt to master the art of photography. Courses are offered throughout the calendar year. The Instructors - NAA Instructors have studied at some of the top art institutions in the world including the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Yale University, Leslie University, Montserrat and Massachusetts College of Art. All of our instructors are notable exhibiting artists. The Program -In recent years the NAA has become the place for the public to study art from a wide range of art courses and workshops. The curriculum varies each semester giving students the opportunity to study cutting edge and traditional techniques. This program has succeeded in bringing an "art school atmosphere" to the region. Who may enroll in art classes? Our art education program is open to the general public from the novice to the advanced artist. High School students are welcome to participate in our adult art program. Children's classes are age specific. Discounts - A discount is available for NAA members and teens who wish to take an adult class. Connect with your creativity as you learn a simple book structure that can be used for small gifts and celebrations. There will be an array of recycled materials to work with and gentle guidance from Susan whose twenty years of teaching bookmaking to children have made her a clear and patient instructor. No art experience or creative confidence is needed; this workshop is truly for everyone. NEW! SIGN UP IS ONGOING PAINTING Painting the Portrait Instructor: Susan Spellman Friday mornings 9-11 AM September 24 - October 29 This class will start with a study of the structure and anatomy of the head and features using drawing materials for the first two classes. With a live portrait model, we will continue to explore the portrait in oil (or other medium of the student's choice) with an emphasis on an individual's characteristics and expression, color mixing for flesh tones, and the development of the student's unique style, using examples from other artists. 2010 Painting by Artist/Instructor Susan Spellman 2010 Painting by Artist/Instructor Lully Schwartz Essentials for the Oil Painter Level: All Skill Levels Instructor: Lully Schwartz Monday Mornings: 9:30 AM - Noon September 20 -November1 (no class Oct. 11) Join Lully as she teaches oil painting through demonstration and individualized instruction in the relaxed atmosphere of the NAA Studio Gallery. Learn more about your own paintings through motivating examples in art history. Lully will also cover time management and motivation for living the artist life. Some drawing experience is required for this class.
DRAWING SCULPTURE PRINTMAKING PHOTOGRAPHY Water Media: Botanical Painting Instructor: Beverly Mitchell Thursday Evenings: 6:30-9 :00 PM September 23 - November 11 In this class Beverly will work with you to explore watercolors or acrylic painting working with color, form, composition and various techniques through botanical subject matter. Individualized attention will be given to each student as Beverly works with you one on one. A variety of subject matters may be explored in this class. 2010 Painting by Artist/Instructor Beverly Mitchel 2010 Drawing by Artist/Instructor Alan Bull Foundation Drawing Level: Beginning/Intermediate Instructor: Alan Bull Thursday Mornings: 9:00-11:00 AM September 23 - November 11 8 weeks Whether you're a painter, photographer or illustrator, good drawing skills are the key to achieving a strong image and effective composition. Join artist Alan Bull as he walks you through the basics of drawing and presents useful tools such as perspective, foreshortening and shading techniques in plain language and easy-to-follow exercises. Demonstrations will focus on relationships between value, contrast, and negative space. Subjects may include still life, landscape, and drawing from the figure. Sharpen your ability to see and draw from life! All levels encouraged to apply, repeat students welcome. Materials will be provided but you may wish to bring along your favorite sketchbook. Figure Drawing Instructor: Alan Bull Wednesday Mornings: 9:00-11:00 AM September 22 - November 17(No class Oct. 6) Learn the fundamental skills of drawing the human figure from a live model. This intensive class will feature instruction on gesture drawing, anatomical proportions, foreshortening, light and shadow, chiaroscuro, and portraiture using pencil, charcoal, ink and pastels. All levels welcome, materials list will be provided upon registration. $5 Model fee will be collected at the beginning of each class. Oil painting with Lully Schwartz The Portrait in Clay Instructor: Marilyn Coon Thursday Evenings: 7:00-9:30 PM September 23 - October 28 Create a life size portrait from a live model with terra cotta clay. Then you will personalize your portrait with your own creative touches. Instruction in building the portrait in terra cotta clay from interior structure to finished piece. Firing is $20 extra. A finishing (patina) demonstration will be done on a fired piece provided by instructor at the final class. Artist/Instructor Marilyn Coon Introduction to Fish Printmaking Workshop Instructor: Gail Boucher Sunday October 17 9:00 AM - Noon $60 Members/ $80 non members Children under 14 must take this class with a parent or guardian. Join instructor Gail Boucher as you learn the Japanese fish printing process of Gyotaku. This involves inking or painting a real fish and printing it on rice paper. After this printing process has been achieved, artists can render the print with watercolor pencils depending on their choice. The fish can be done singularly or multiply in layers. The mediums are water based (ink, acrylic or watercolor). Fish specimens will be provided. 2010 Print by Artist/Instructor Gail Boucher The Digital Camera: Practical Uses for Artists With John Raleigh Sunday, October 24, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM One Day Workshop $125 Members/ $145 Non-Members For Artists who want to photograph subjects for their paintings, drawings and sculpture before working in their chosen media. In this workshop John will help remove the mystery of using a digital camera. Learn what you need to know about camera, lens, exposure, image quality settings and more. We'll also cover the basics of photographing artwork for print and web and the quality requirements for each of these. Practical photography travel tips including preserving those valuable images will also be discussed. Bring your camera, the manual that came with it, and any questions that have gone unanswered. PASTEL WORKSHOP CHILDREN'S ART CLASSES TEEN ART CLASSES VISITING ARTIST SERIES Landscape Painting In Pastel Instructor: Andrew Anderson-Bell November 6 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM This pastel workshop will focus on landscape painting working in the studio from photographs, memory and imagination. Emphasis will be placed on composition, values and light. Andrew will share how he uses different papers, tools, materials and technique when working with pastels. Students will receive individual attention, demonstrations and constructive critiques. 2010 Painting by Artist/Instructor Andrew Anderson-Bell Glazing Techniques for Painters Level: Intermediate Instructor: Susan Hebenstriet Sunday Workshop September 26 9:00 AM - 1 PM $80 Members/ $100 non members Join Susan to learn the age old technique of glazing. Glazing is a process of applying one thin coat of paint over another to change it's temperature, add volume to an object and illuminate your art. Glazing is magic! The class will be given a subject to paint for this workshop. Students will explore glazing using acrylic paints. And, will gain an understanding for glazing Mrs. Johnson s Children s Art Class Children's Drawing & Painting Level: Youth Ages 7 to 14 Instructor: Beverly Mitchell Wednesday After School: 4:00-5:30 PM September 22 November 10 8 weeks $145 Members/ $155 Non Members Students will be shown new ways of seeing that will enhance their drawing abilities with concentration on color and design using watercolor. Have fun and learn about fine art. $5 Materials fee to be collected by the Instructor at the first class. Children's Painting: The Artist's Canvas Level: Youth Ages 6 to 10 With Christine Molitor Johnson September 23 - October 28 6 weeks Thursday After School 4:00-5:30 PM $145 Members/ $155 Non Members In this course young artists will discover the styles of famous artists Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Manet, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Picasso and create expressive art using these styles. Using sketch books, crayons, colored pencils to experiment, children will then recreate the style of the famous artist through the use of acrylic paints on canvas boards. Students will learn basic art skills while enjoying art and music. One $10 materials fee will be collected by the instructor at the first class. Portfolio Art for Teens Instructors: Susan Spellman & Lully Schwartz September 28 - October 19 4 weeks Tuesday After School 4:00-5:30 PM See gallery staff for details FREE! Create and present art for your portfolio! This is an ARTLINK funded class designed for students interested in Visual Art as a career choice. Students in this class will work on and expand their portfolios and is ideal for students who are thinking about going on to Art College. Portfolios will be reviewed by an area college professional at the end of the 4 sessions to offer suggestions. Materials Provided. Limited to ten students. NAA Teen Portfolio Art Class Painting the Poetry of the Place with Donald Jurney All Skill Levels 3-Day Plein Air Workshop October 15, 16, 17-10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Cost: $425 Members/$445 non members Join Donald Jurney for this exclusive opportunity to study outdoor painting with one of America's premier contemporary artists. In this concentrated three-day workshop learn how to paint on location with new found confidence and results. Mr. Jurney will cover the joy and challenge of painting out-of-doors, and will discuss and demonstrate plein-air techniques involving drawing, composition, and paint application. "Great paintings are not simply paintings of things---they are paintings about something." You ll learn to identify the poetry of the place, as well as learn to capture that poetry in paint. This class will be held on location and move into the studio/gallery depending on the weather.
