April 21, 2017 Can dogs look apologetic? Let me restate that. Can dogs, other than Becca, look apologetic? Apparently, yes. Once again, we have an odd ball kind of study. This time instead of why shoe laces come untied, someone has studied why dogs look guilty when they've done something wrong. A molecular biologist, of all people, wrote a paper on it, and he said it stems from a behavior inherited from wolves. He calls it the apology bow. With wolves, when a pup does something to irate an adult, the adult growls and the pup drops its head submissively and puts its tail between its legs. "Oaky, hold the phone," Becca said. I'm not sure she knows what a phone is, but these days I just go with it. "I don't apologize for anything." "I've noticed." She glared at me. "And besides, I don't have a tail." "Well, like you said, you don't apologize for anything, including stealing the can of cat food from Lydia and licking it to beyond clean." "She was finished, and Cassidy knocked it off the dryer" (I feed Lydia on top of the dryer to keep her food away from the dogs) "so it's Cassidy's fault, not mine. She should apologize." "Never mind that. What the article was getting at is that when a dog does something she knows is wrong, like stealing food off the table, or chewing on shoes..." "I've never done that." "Or shredding paper towels from a waste basket,..." Becca looked away. Not quite an apology but an acknowledgement. "The apology bow helps to keep the punishment at a minimum so that the dog isn't ostracized from the pack-or these days her human companion." "That's very different from being guilty," though Becca pointed out. "You do know that 'guilty' is a human emotion. To attribute that emotion to a dog is called anthropomorphism. You humans think that because you feel that emotion, dogs can also feel that. Just because we lower our eyes --you call it sad eyes, which is another anthropomorphism --and drop our head, doesn't mean we're feeling guilty about anything. It's just a ploy to make you forgive us and give us a treat." I looked at her and wondered...but this was an uncomfortable conversation to be having with a dog, so I changed the subject. "April finally had her baby last week. Now we get to name the new born." Becca said she didn't understand what all the hoopla was about. "Just call him Joe and get over it," she said. I knew better. But... "Why Joe?" "That's the name of the baby gorilla in that book tape you've been listening."

"You mean the Bone Labyrinth by James Rollins?" "If it has gorillas in it, then, yeah. Joe. Simple. Easy to holler, Hey Joe, get over here." She did this in a kinda Brooklyn accent. I swear, I don't know where she gets this stuff. "Well, Joe hasn't made it to the top 4: Apollo, Patches, Peter and Noah." "Patches, gee that's cute." Becca smirked. "What about Splotches, instead. Or Spindly Legs, or Falling on Your Butt Right After You're Born." "Becca, that's not nice." "You're anthropomorphisming again." "That's not a word." "Yes it is." "No it's not." "Yes it is." "No..." I've said it before, you just can't win an argument with an Aussie. What Wind Contest! We have a winner! Karen Bryan with a dog, a fire hydrant and wind.
