Technology Choices

Technology Choices Zigbee A recognized RF platform operating on three Channels 868Mhz and 2.4Ghz. Popular in USA mostly, 2.4Ghz as a mesh network. Disadvantages - costly, license only waveband is crowded with AV streaming, working as a 1-2-1 product not suitable. Z Wave Similar to Zigbee, slightly lower cost, working mostly on a closed RF platform, so no development potential. Although standardized, not that simple to work with just any Z wave product from a manufacturer. Bluetooth Designed originally for near field pairing of devices such as audio, headsets, printers etc, it is not suitable to work over greater distances and again although different levels of Bluetooth are available, cost limits its possibilities. Wifi The most recognised wireless medium, easy set up. 2.4Ghz not ideal for reliability. Cost prohibits affordable devices. Will not work battery operated devices.

LightwaveRF Available on 433Mhz or 868Mhz. A radio protocol that s robust and flexible with the ability to adapt and add additional functionality. Expandable, with either 1 or 2 way operation. API available for third parties to develop with. Affordable no license fee, allows for battery operated devices because of low power consumption, ability to incorporate into virtually any device. Already one of the largest range of dedicated products available using this protocol. Ownership of both software and production of all lines gives total control of the brands value and dynamics it brings to the markets.

Intelligent Control An RF window trigger sends command to identify open windows when heating is on, continues to send pulse every few minutes so the thermostat can know the status of the window by keeping a register of received signals. This data could also be used by security system to determine if the windows / doors are shut when leaving the house. Software in an internet gateway will use the thermostat data to present information on the house TV, a tablet or a mobile device. Rule based software option for intelligent control of heating, lighting and power control.
