Derek Geordie Street Artist Andy (Andrew) Capp Group No Hero Reason Why Chosen Image North East character celebrating his 61st anniversary this year. Andy is a working-class figure who never actually works. The title of the strip is a pun on the local pronunciation of "handicap"; and the surname "Capp" signifies how Andy's cap always covered his eyes along with, metaphorically, his vision in life. #48 Early on, the Andy Capp strip was accused of perpetuating stereotypes about Britain's Northerners, who are seen in other parts of England as chronically unemployed, dividing their time between the living room couch and the neighbourhood pub, with a few hours set aside for fistfights at football games... But Smythe (the creator), himself a native of that region, had nothing but affection for his good-for-nothing protagonist. Since the very beginning, Andy has been immensely popular among the people he supposedly skewers
Valerie Moody Showpeople and the Hoppings Fair Group No Heroes Image - front Images Valerie Moody is the first female member of a fairground community to receive an MBE. She is married to a Showman and her family s fairground roots go back 8 generations. She believes that it is only during her life time that the education of showchildren has moved up the political agenda. #49 As National Education Liaison Office for the Showman s Guild of Great Britain for over 30 years she has worked with schools, education authorities and a host of advisory panels and committees, to raise the profile of the 20000 strong fairground community and the education of its children including setting up the Hoppings Fair in Newcastle. Like most show children of her generation she was failed by her schools. She attended three different schools and month and was bullied for her unconventional fairground background and was pleased to abandon her studies at 13 without a single academic qualification. She spent her teens looking after her younger brothers and sisters and operating the helter skelter or ghost train with her parents. Ms Moodys community tours the North East. The children now have much more stability in their schooling. There has been an enormous attitude change to our community. Leaving school with no qualifications is no longer an expectation. My son left school with 8 O Levels and that s quite typical. He then combined an electronic business with working at the fair and he now runs his own company
Derek Geordie Street Artist Florrie (Flo) Capp Group No Hero Reason Why Chosen Image Florrie (Flo) Capp - Named after Florence Nightingale At times, Flo will forcibly remove Andy from the pub when she feels he has been there for far too long. When he comes home, especially in the earlier strips, Flo often confronted him about his doings. #50 However, Flo is not without her own vices. She goes to Bingo as often and with as much frequency as Andy goes to the pub. Whenever this happened, the roles are reversed, with Andy usually confronting Flo for being late! Created by Reg Smythe the cartoon strips appeared in at least 700 newspapers in 34 countries. Reg Smythe was born in Hartlepool the son of a shipyard worker, and in 1936 he joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, and was posted to Egypt.
