WASSILY KANDINSKY Inspired by music and an inner spirit Composition VIII 1923 (140 Kb); Oil on canvas, 140 x 201 cm (55 1/8 x 79 1/8 in); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York
ABSTRACT ART PIONEERED BY KANDINSKY Music was important to the birth of abstract art, since music is abstract by nature it does not try to represent the exterior world, but expresses in an immediate way the inner feelings of the soul. Kandinsky sometimes used musical terms to identify his works; he called his most spontaneous paintings "improvisations" and described more elaborate works as "compositions." (Wikipedia) His writing in The Blue Rider Almanac and the treatise "On the Spiritual In Art" (which was released in 1910) were both a defence and promotion of abstract art and an affirmation that all forms of art were equally capable of reaching a level of spirituality. He believed that colour could be used in a painting as something autonomous, apart from the visual description of an object or other form. (Wikipedia)

MAKING THE MOST OF A LIMITED NUMBER OF COLORS Working with limited colors can add clarity and unity to a composition. The quilt uses the same few colors in different combinations resulting in a rich variety. Lydia Neuman, Cobblestones: Pink and Green, 2002, pieced cotton.
COLOR CREATES IMPACT Consider how limiting your palette can create an emotional impact or EMPHASIZE (highlight, make important) something in the composition. David Mazzucchelli, Asterios Polyp, Pantheon Books, New York.
INTERACTION COMPOSITION Cut your Bristol Board down to a size you would like and tape off the edges. The objective is to maximize the effect of a limited palette using color interaction (our previous assignment) and proportional (size/amounts) variation. Using a minimum of 6 colors TWICE, create a design that shows how putting one color near another can change its appearance (color relativity or color context). Try to alter the way the color looks in each location. You may use combinations created in the last assignment. You may choose whether to paint or collage this composition. Your design should reflect an interpretation of music. Listen to a certain style or song as your inspiration. Think about HEAVY versus light shapes and lines in relation to the sounds or feelings you get from the music. Imagine what a song would look like. DO NOT ILLUSTRATE LYRICS. Pay attention to the instrumentation, the sound of the singer's voice if there is a singer, and how the music feels. See if your color relationships can evoke that feeling or flow found in the song.
