Canada Manitoba Northern Owls 1 st to 7 th March 2020 (7 days) Snowy Owl by Lev Frid Manitoba during winter may not sound much like a birding destination, but it is one of Canada s bestkept birding secrets. Every winter, sought-after northern owls Snowy, Great Grey, Northern Hawk and Boreal Owls, emerge from their usual haunts in the depths of the woods to hunt along forest edges, roadsides and agricultural fields only a short distance from the capital city of Winnipeg. Manitoba s

RBL Canada - Manitoba Itinerary 2 location in the north means that every winter provides chances to see these birds, and in some years their numbers can be astronomical! Add this to a backdrop of flocks of colourful winter finches and a suite of boreal specialty birds and it becomes a fantastic winter escape! Our Manitoba tour takes us through open agricultural land where we will search for Snowy Owls in addition to Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Grey Partridge, Sharp-tailed Grouse and others, and seek species such as Eastern Screech Owl and Bohemian Waxwing in suburban parkland, and Bald and Golden Eagles and Northern Goshawk overhead. We will work our way northwards to the vast expanse of boreal forest, where we will look for Northern Hawk, Great Grey and Boreal Owl as well as Red and White-winged Crossbills, Common and Hoary Redpolls, Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Siskin, Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Canada Jay and others. We visit two boreal forest parks Riding Mountain National Park and Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, which offer unparalleled access into this landscape and its birds, as well as some excellent chances for elusive mammals - most notably Canada Lynx, as well as American Marten, North American Otter, Long-tailed Weasel, Gray Wolf, Red Fox, Moose and White-tailed Deer. We have many chances to find our targets in a variety of locations, and we will be at the start of the breeding season for many of these birds, which will be singing and easier to find.

RBL Canada - Manitoba Itinerary 4 THE TOUR IN DETAIL Day 1: Arrival in Winnipeg. Today is set aside as an arrival day in Winnipeg. This evening we shall meet for a welcome dinner to discuss our plans for the forthcoming days. Day 2: Winnipeg to Hecla via Oak Hammock Marsh. This morning we will explore one of Manitoba s best birding locations, the Oak Hammock Marsh as well as a few other locations around town. We will search for regal Bohemian Waxwings feeding on fruiting trees and encounter our first majestic Snowy Owls hunting in the agricultural fields. We shall visit some known day roosts for Eastern Screech Owl and Great Horned Owl, and perhaps Northern Saw-whet Owl. Besides owls, we will seek Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Sharptailed Grouse, Grey Partridge, Northern Harrier, Bald Eagle and others as we slowly head northwards to Hecla, where we will base ourselves for the next two nights. Great Grey Owl by Lev Frid Day 3: Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park. Our entire day today will be devoted to exploring Manitoba s vast boreal forests. Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park and surrounding area support a full range of boreal species, and it is here where we will seek out Great Grey Owl, Northern Hawk-Owl and Boreal Owl. Our strategy will be to drive slowly in the early morning and evening to pick out the owls as they hunt alongside the myriad of roads in this area. Quite unafraid of humans, they often offer framefilling views! During the day, we will seek other boreal species such as Spruce Grouse, Black-backed and American Three-toed Woodpeckers, Canada Jay, and a full suite of finches including Red and Whitewinged Crossbills. Spending a lot of time on the road means that mammal sightings are possible, and we Northern Hawk Owl by Lev Frid

RBL Canada - Manitoba Itinerary 5 have a very real chance of seeing the ghost-like Canada Lynx as well as Gray Wolf, American Marten, North American Otter, North American Porcupine, Moose and White-tailed Deer. Boreal Owl by Lev Frid Day 4: Hecla to Dauphin. In the morning, we will once again be on the lookout for owls along the various roads nearby, and seeking any species we may have missed to this point. After lunch, we will start our journey westwards towards Riding Mountain National Park through some productive agricultural fields that will give us more chances for Snowy Owl. These owls have a variety of different plumages, and we will hope to see a full suite of them from the huge, dark young females to the snow-white adult males. Arriving at Dauphin we will have dinner, and depending on the weather try for Boreal Owl at night nearby. Day 5: Riding Mountain National Park. We have the full day today to explore Riding Mountain National Park, north to south. The park supports a healthy population of breeding Great Grey Owl, and we will hope to see, and perhaps hear some of these immense birds hunting along the roadside. Any of the northern owls are possible here as well, and mammal-watching is usually very good. We have a further chance of finding the elusive Canada Lynx. Feeders around the small towns often provide great studies of Common and Hoary Redpoll, Pine Siskin, Evening Grosbeak and Pine Grosbeak if we are lucky. We will stay on the south end of Riding Mountain, and after dinner we will seek Boreal Owl again if we haven t seen them yet. Day 6: Dauphin area to Winnipeg. Our success over the previous days will govern what we do today - whether it be heading north to Riding Mountain again to find any missing species or get better looks at one of our previous targets, or perhaps return to agricultural areas further to the south for more looks at Snowy Owl or other raptors. There are often stakeouts of wintering birds that local birders have found, and we may use this day to seek those - whether it be a day roosting Long-eared Owl or a rare songbird coming to feeders. Whatever we choose to do, we will return back to our hotel in Winnipeg at the end of the day. Day 7: Final departures. This morning our tours comes to an end at Winnipeg Airport.
