THE RAYMOND Vogel COLLECTION AUCTION PREVIEW AUCTION GALLERIES, INC. siegelauctions.com
THE RAYMOND Vogel COLLECTION Ray Vogel was a dominant force in philately for the past 50 years. He retired from the construction business early in life, and thereafter devoted himself to collecting, exhibiting and supporting his hometown Collectors Club of Chicago. Ray formed a number of collections he called them his 12 s and 15 s (12 and 15 1861-68 Issues), 1 51-57 s (1 1851-56 Imperforate and 1 Perforated Plate 1 Late stamps), Famous People (covers addressed to famous Americans), French Eagles (French Colonies Eagle type general issues on covers), Samoa Mixed Frankings (Samoa Express and Palm Tree mixed frankings with U.S. stamps) and Large Dues (U.S. Large Postage Due covers). Until the last week of his long and vibrant life, Ray was bidding on and buying items for his collections. Now, the firm that bears the name of his closest friend in philately will offer Ray s marvelous collections (with one exception: according to his wishes, the Large Dues have been sold privately). Two sales will be held one in October and the other in December highlights of which are presented in this preview brochure. sale one October 2010 United States 12 and 15 1861-68 Issues Covers Addressed to Famous Americans (and other United States covers) French Colonies Eagle Issue Covers Samoa Mixed Frankings Deluxe hardbound catalogue ($25 postpaid) sale two December 2010 United States 1 1851-56 Imperforate and 1 1857 Perforated Plate 1 Late Issues Deluxe hardbound catalogue ($25 postpaid) Other announcements regarding the sales and e-catalogues will be posted to our website during the coming months. siegelauctions.com
12 s 15 s T he Chicago School of collecting is known for specialists in one or two values of a & particular issue or series of issues. Prominent collectors from the Chicago School were Paul Rohloff (5 1847-98), Bob Paliafito (30 1861), Leon Hyzen (24 1861), Tony Russo, Dr. Joe Rorke and Sheldon Friedman (all three specialized in the 2 Black Jack). Still active today is Michael Laurence, a 10 1869 collector and former Chicago resident. Together with Ray Vogel, these collectors formed significant collections focused on a single issue. Essays, proofs, stamps, varieties and multiples tell part of the story, while covers complete the narrative by showing how the stamps were used. Ray s eye for unusual covers and discipline in choosing quality examples greatly influenced the development of his 12 and 15 collection. It is, without question, the best collection of its kind ever formed.

Covers to Famous Americans While others collected free franks, Ray Vogel chose to collect examples of mail addressed to famous Americans, such as the cover to John Brown as a prisoner after Harper s Ferry and the Lincoln campaign cover to Lincoln. This small but fascinating collection will be offered in Sale One along with miscellaneous stamps and covers that caught Ray s eye over his many years of collecting.
FRENCH EAGLES R ay s decision to collect French Colonies Eagle issues came relatively late in life, but he tackled the subject with vigor. From the start he set an almost impossible condition standard for himself: every stamp must have four margins. The French Eagles were narrowly spaced apart on the plates, and examples rarely have four margins. Ray was successful in acquiring more than 75 covers, including rare military markings, post offices in French China and extraordinary rates and frankings.

Other items that attracted Ray s interest in later life are mixed-franking covers with United States and Samoan stamps. This also led to the acquisition of related covers, including a Samoa Express mixed franking with New Zealand stamps (shown on the back of this brochure). These colorful and rare Samoan covers will bring Sale One to a conclusion. Samoa
