Pre-session Please go to your Google Play/ Apple Store and download these three free apps (there are ipads available): Aurasma Augment LayAR You will find QR codes to help you find them on your chair
Immersive Technologies: from conception to implementation. Bryony Olney & Dr Bobby Nisha (University of Sheffield) Stephanie Barker (Manchester Metropolitan University)
This session will cover: The basics of Augmented Reality, and some examples you might know Augmented Reality in Urban Design Education (University of Sheffield) AR at Manchester Metropolitan and how to get started Look at ways AR could help you Practical session exploring our projects using your smart devices
What is augmented reality?
Some AR apps you may know
Some AR apps you may know
Some AR apps you may know
Augmented Reality in Urban Design Education: Problem Design: psychological construct of space; cognition to identify, organize, represent and interpret space. To design is to imagine alternative realities Design discipline : transforms and shapes the built environment
Augmented Reality in Urban Design Education: Challenge Orthographic projection: a method of projection in which an object is depicted using parallel lines to project its outline onto a plane. Plan, elevation, section, 3d model Spatial reasoning: subjective, non-verifiable Mismatches may result from the notion of boundaries that are whether physical, conceptual, actual and deceptive.
Augmented Reality in Urban Design Education What Augment does: virtual content superimposed over the real world. Multiple layers of physical and imagined realities can be mapped; be made to co-exist. Verify your understanding of space; spatial scale
Augmented Reality in Design Education: Solution We wanted: Assessments better suited to learning outcomes; Ability to assess students capability to visualise space & manipulate scale More interactive and engaging learning for students and teachers Connects physical/digital objects
Augmented Reality in Design Education: Augment
Augmented Reality in Design Education: Augment 3D Models or animated GIFS LTI available for modelling software e.g. Sketchup directly to Augment Uses unique Trackers Models become portable e.g. interviews
Augmented Reality in Design Education Reflections: - Increase in the quality of 3D models - Holistic approach to learning design articulation Student Voice Employability
AR at Manchester Metropolitan
The project inspiration The need: to drive engagement with key information for new PGRs, and provide induction materials that are accessible at any time Secondary goal: to inspire PGRs to begin using augmented reality to communicate their research
Information we wanted to communicate Online Induction How to register for their research degree How they will work with their supervisor What training and development is available How they will manage their research degree Their research degree path What support is available What opportunities are out there
Getting Started with AR: A Simple Project with Aurasma
Results so far Positive experience of using the app Approved of accessibility plans Immediately asking questions of how they could use it themselves Each person found one thing they hadn t known about before
Creating something with AR Aurasma 1. Upload an image (Trigger) 2. Upload a video or image for it to display (Overlay) 3. Choose an action and a result 4. Save (Aura) Augment 1. Upload an image for your tracker 2. Upload a 3D model (e.g.fbx) 3. Use the app to fix scale/orientation 4. Save Trigger + Overlay = Aura
Activity: What uses can you think of for AR? 1. In groups, discuss how AR might help you. 2. Pop your project ideas onto the post-its and stick them to the wall. 3. Pick one project to communicate back Do you have information you need to engage people with? Could your students use this to communicate their research? How about your research? What could you be showing rather than telling people about?
Activity: What uses can you think of for AR? Some of our projects. 1. Coming up next for Manchester Metropolitan: Campus & Manchester tour - using maps like Pokemon with a 360 camera 2. Custom snapchat filter for graduation ceremonies & university events 3. Visualising 3D models, designs or spatial change 4. Interactive CVs 5. Video recipe book 6. Gym equipment demonstrations
