Structure and dynamics of goose areas in Russian Arctic P.M. Glazov glazpech@mail.ru Institute of Geography RAS

Main goals: Structure and dynamics of goose areas in Russian Arctic. Studying of breeding areas Studying of flyways Studying of wintering areas

Present day changes of goose areas: Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis Breading area befor 1952 year (Ptyshenko, 1952) Breading area from 50 till 80 years Present day breeding area

Lesser White-Fronted Goose Anser erythropus

Red-Breasted Goose Branta ruficollis breeding area before 1952 year wintering area before 1952 year present day breeding area Present day wintering area

Areas of researches in Arctic 2006 2007 years

Dynamics of bird s population on the Kolguev island European Whitefronted Goose Research programme (Dr. Helmut Kruckenberg) ECORA - Integrated Ecosystem Approach to Conserve Biodiversityand Minimize Habitat Fragmentation in the Russian Arctic S-Petersburg University (Kondratiev A.V.)

Noted 72 birds and 50 nesting birds The main colony of Barnacle Goose At first time nesting proved: Teal, Velvet scoter, Common scoter, Great skua, Kittiwake First time registered - Ross's Goose and Number increase: Barnacle Goose, Bewick s Swan Number reduction Lesser Whitefront, Brent Goose, Eider

Ringing program of whitefronted goose: 2006 year - 56 neckbanded 2007 year - 123 neckbanded Satellite-tracking by our German colleagues : 2006 year - 7 birds 2007 year - 14 birds

European Whitefronted Goose Research program (Dr. Helmut Kruckenberg) Project satellite tracking of Whiterfonted Geese 4 birds visit Kolgyev island http://www.blessgans.de

We found tendencies of waterfowl birds number changes, peculiarities of their nesting areas distribution on the island, changes in local flyways during last ten years. Species Barnacle Goose Whitefronted Goose Bean Goose Anser fabalis Branta leucopsis Anser albifrons Population size 400,000 Birds Russian population 1,500,000-1,700,000 birds European population 500,000 600,000 birds European population Population size on the Kolguev island 170,000 birds 400,000 600,000 birds 150,000 200,000 birds % ~ 42 % ~ 30 % ~ 30 %

Eggs collection 2000-3000 eggs per year. Hunting bag 5000 6000 geese per year

Traditional Nature Use zone of oil resources extraction; zone of hunting and fishing (traditional nature use); zone of conducting reindeer breeding

Researches on the Kolguev island The main plans of next year work are: Estimation of goose population changes under the climate changes and human activities Generalization of collected data in joint paper To continue the work in co-operation with German and Dutch colleagues in joint project

Integrated Habitat Management Programme for Migratory Anser-Geese in the Upper Volga Region Project goal: To develop a Master Plan for sustainable conservation and management of marshes and floodplain areas as protected spring staging areas for geese and endangered migratory bird species as well as to develop a long-term survey program on geese migration routes between Europe and the Centre of European Russia Belomoro-Baltic Moscow Central-Europian Southern Main aims: Report of on existing ring recoveries Management plans for 4 major geese staging areas Report of a migratory geese flyway survey Training programs BBI-MATRA project Alterra Wageningen UR and the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution RAS (IEE)

Studying of Brent Goose population in the Pyasina Delta (Taimyr) 2008 year Dr Bart A. Nolet Netherlands Institute of Ecology NIOO-KNAW Dr Bart S. Ebbinge Alterra (Wageningen, The Netherlands) Heritage Institute (Russia)

Plans: Continuation of researches on the Kolguev island Starting whitefronted goose ringing program and studying of their major stage areas in Upper Volga region Studying of Brent Goose population in the Pyasina Delta (Taimyr)

Thank you for attention! Welcome for cooperation!
