(archeologist) Undetermined Administrative Information Provenance The photographs were found by Clifford Evans when cleaning out an old file that had been in use in the Division of Archeology for a long time. He speculated that it was RBS material. Others speculated that it was material received from Joseph Caldwell. Additional photographs by Caldwell can be found in the National Anthropological Archives in Photo Lot 81K. Correspondence from Caldwell and records relating to the Bilbo, Deptford, and other sites, can be found in the National Anthropological Archives in Antonio Waring's papers. Records, notes, and correspondence by Caldwell can be found in the National Anthropological Archives in Department of Anthropology Personnel Files 1911-1994, Frank Maryl Setzler's papers, and the River Basin Surveys Records. Biographical Note Joseph Ralston Caldwell (1916-1973) was an archeologist best known for conducting Works Projects Administration (WPA) excavations in Chatham county, Georgia, circa 1937-1941. Caldwell then served as scientific aide to the National Museum's Director of Anthropology (1943-1945) and as an archeologist for the Smithsonian's River Basin Surveys (1946-1949). In 1957, he received a doctorate in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. From 1963 to 1964, Caldwell was a Fulbright professor of Archaeology at the University of Tehran and a professor of Anthropology at the Medical School of the National University of Iran. In 1967, he became a professor of Anthropology and Director of the Laboratory of Archaeology at the University of Georgia. Scope and Contents Photographs documenting excavations in. There are images of scenery, dig sites, WPA workers, and pottery sherds and skeletons found during excavations at the Irene site, Bilbo site (CH 4), Walthour site (CH 11), Deptford (CH4), CH2 and CH8.
