8 February 2014 Annual Image of the Year Banquet The annual awards banquet will be held on Sunday, March 2nd from 4-7pm at O Donnell s American Grill & Irish Pub. See the website for address and map. The cost for the event will be determined prior to the February meeting and registration forms will be available at the meeting to reserve your spot. We are excited to have guest speaker Alan Kearney attending this year. Here is a bit of information he shared about what he will be presenting. Title of the talk is: Alaska To Patagonia: a photographer's journey It will cover my earliest trips to Alaska and Patagonia, and right up to the last one in 2008. Although I will show a few climbing photos; mountains, landscapes, nature and wildlife will be the emphasis. My trip to the Arctic Wildlife Refuge in 2005 was especially good. I will discuss how the images were captured with regard to time of day, light, composition, and equipment, and any special techniques. I have a 24 hour time-lapse sequence of Mt. Fitz Roy in Patagonia that was literally shot by hand, going to the camera every hour and punching the release. There are also some light-painted scenes that were done in the field using a powerful flashlight or headlamp. And lots of wildlife from Bald Eagles in Homer, Alaska to Flamingoes, Guanacos and Nandus in Patagonia. As for myself I graduated from WSU with a degree in Wildlife Biology in 1974, worked as a ranger naturalist in North Cascades National Park in 1977, and later taught climbing for a guide service here in Bellingham. I have been a full-time pro photographer for 23 years. The majority of my income came from over 800 images on the Getty Images website. Over the years some of those photos have appeared in Newsweek, Men's Health, Seattle Magazine, corporate brochures, annual reports, Washington State Tourism ad, and of course most of the climbing publications such as Rock And Ice, Climbing, and Alpinist. My dad was serious amateur photographer, and my mom a watercolor painter. I have written and published three books: Mountaineering In Patagonia, Color Hiking Guide To Mount Rainier, and Classic Climbs Of The Northwest. Questions? Email sonyalang@hotmail.com

Glennie Nature Salon Images are due to Jim Basinger (jbasinger@comcast.net) no later than Tuesday, February 11th (same date your February regular and monthly challenge images are due). You may submit up to 8 images that meet the PSA nature definition that is there should be no evidence of the hand of man in the images (exception banded birds are OK). There are three competition categories: 1. Animals (consisting of the following categories) Birds Mammals Invertebrates Reptiles Amphibians Marine & Freshwater Life 2. Botany 3. Landscape Images that have previously been submitted to this competition cannot be re-submitted. Images that have been previously submitted for PSA and PCC competitions are eligible for this competition. Flutter by, Butterfly! Seven Pilchuckers Steve, Janet, Norm, Sonya, Greg, Paula and Renata, headed to the butterfly house at Seattle s Pacific Science Center on Saturday, January 18th. If you ever wanted an opportunity to have the chance to practice your macro shots on moving subjects, this is the place. Although some butterflies were little posers most were not, and it was a challenge to catch them sitting still for long with their wings spread out showing natures incredible patterns across their wings. The weather turned out pretty good and we even ate lunch outside. There just happened to be a photo exhibit, The Photography of Modernist Cuisine, which showed some very interesting perspectives of food photography including still images as well as some slow motion video. The slow motion jello happens to be my favorite! Of course we couldn t leave without photos of our cities icon sporting the 12th man flag GO HAWKS! Thank you Steve for planning this outing. 9 February 2014
