III. High-Performance Melter Basic Data Melting of bitumen in Pörner Bitumen Bags 2 Step process: Liquefaction by melting grid (patent pending) Further heating up to application temperature in the collecting tank (approx. 150 C) 20 ft. tank with heating tubes Tank volume approx. 27m³ Required personnel 2 persons per shift Parallel operation of several units possible At normal ambient conditions the High-Performance Melter can liquefy up to 4 TPH. 16 Pörner Bitumen Packing System Vienna, January 2014
III. High-Performance Melter Energy maintenance The Melter is operated with hot gas produced by a burner (oil or gas fired) in a combustion chamber. For liquefying the bitumen from Pörner Bitumen Bags a special heating grid is used. This grid consists of several single heating elements with triangle profile. Piece per piece charging from the top prevents heat energy loss and guarantees a safe operation. 17 Pörner Bitumen Packing System Vienna, January 2014
III. High-Performance Melter Heating process Each heating element is provided with internal gas guiding device (Patent Pörner): to distribute the hot gas to maintain similar heating temperature over the surface of the heating elements gas temperature at inlet is approx. 400 C and outlet approx. 250 C surface temperature on the heating elements when bitumen is liquefied is approx. 210-230 C. This setup warrants the complete dissolving of the plastic film. The hot gas from outlet (250 C) is used for further heating of the bitumen in the collecting tank. 18 Pörner Bitumen Packing System Vienna, January 2014
III. High-Performance Melter Capacity In full operation the melting speed is approx. 1cm/sec At normal ambient temperature (20 C) a volume of 95 Tons can be liquefied per day The High-Performance Melter is applicable at any place where bitumen is needed. 19 Pörner Bitumen Packing System Vienna, January 2014
III. High-Performance Melter Supplementary Equipment Optionally the energy contained in the exhaust gas from collecting tank can also be recovered to: preheat the hot gas for the melter grid this saves approx. 30-40% of the general energy consumption of the melting system The High-Performance Melter can be part of a local bitumen supply terminal or situated directly adjacent to a hotmix plant. 20 Pörner Bitumen Packing System Vienna, January 2014
